Description

my shading is nowhere near realistic but i do that on purpose, not aiming to be realistic

the normal version isn’t realistic either, it’s just it’s plain and i used to shade that way and the pics weren’t so lively

That's not 'artistic license' (as someone further down implied), or a 'special' way of shading, but...well...basic knowledge of color theory.
If you spend just a little bit of time observing light and color in reality, you'll see that proper shading can only be achieved by varying saturation (intensity of color), value (lightness of color) and hue (type of color) -as done on the right. If you only vary saturation and value...well, it will look flat and kind of odd, like on the left.

So yeah, for anyone who wonders why the 2nd way of shading is the proper way of doing it: Look up color theory and hue/value/saturation

So true. I've seen some people mistaking the left one for more realistic shading, but that is a mistake.

SO basically left is the classic anime coloration, and right is more realistic coloration.

It's to do with colour theory.

Artistic License my tutor used to call it when he was teaching me how to paint, and he always encouraged the use of more colour when adding shadow. A lesson I will always abide by.

i cant find it but there is a picture for GTA V driving that goes like this-

how you're supposed to drive- *curved line following roads*

how most people drive- *straight line to the destination*

how I drive- *all over the place*

You can see the notable difference. Either can work well, but your coloring seems to pop out more. This will help me significantly, thank you!

I love how saturated yours is compared to "normal," because it feels more lively and it's very eye-catching. Very reminiscent of your style. Cx

The apple with the "normal" shading looks like it's waxed...
The apple with your shading looks more delicious, more natural

I don't know. I feel like it's the reverse. Apples I know are really shiny that it reflects white.

Kawacy shading still looks interesting, making it more stylistic in a very subtle way.

AIBoobPicsForSale In reply to egreham [2015-04-15 19:00:23 +0000 UTC]

It doesn't have to do with animal fat, but dielectrics vs. conductors. A non-waxed apple will be shaded similarly even if not as shiny.

Dielectric (non-metallic) objects have specular highlights (glossiness) that are the same color as the light shined on them, in this case white. It sounds boring but it's how most surfaces in the world work, shine a light on something glossy and the highlights will be the same color as the light.

Conductors (metallics) differ in that they sometimes saturate glossiness toward the color of their surface - aside from 'being shinier' that's one way you can make something appear more metallic.

In this submission the second apple is shaded more similarly to if it is either metal or is being lit by an orange light. Of course it is fine to take liberties like this making art. You can look up 'physically based rendering / PBR' if the science of this is interesting to you, it's how modern computer rendering works and is all about being as accurate to real life as possible, which can help us understand how to copy that when we want to paint realistic things.

That's because a layer of wax made from animal fat is applied to them since in order to make sure they are edible their natural wax coating is stripped during the cleaning process of the apples. Whether their natural wax coating looks like that I don't know but the ones you normally see in the grocery store is not natural.

I like giving detailed instructions.
Sigh, ok I'll be nice.
In general, you (obviously) want to take your base colour, darken it some, and then place it where shadows should be. And then do it again, for a few layers, each time using a narrower....brush, whatever it's called. Now, here's where you get multiple options. everyone does it differently but personally I then go back over that with the base colour, and then re-do those layers of shading with an opacity of 25-60 percent depending on how deep the shadows need to be. If your sharacter is in the dark, it'd be a lot closer to black, right? yeah. And then you get to highlights, same process, just instead of shading it's....highlights.
Hopefully I helped, I'll apologise for the original response but only because you seem like you have the potential to have decent potential.
