Description Finally caught the Black Chinned hummingbird's throat flash... don't know how I missed this shot, found it in a file from last June! I'd better keep trying and get a better one soon, or they'll be gone for the winter...

I've tried many, many times with this little beast The Anna's will come right up to the feeder when I'm standing there with the camera but this one waits until I walk away He has a distinctive sound to his wings so I know exactly when he shows up...when I'm not ready!!!

Really? I think he did that for fun I remember something like that happened to me before. It was with a mantis I called Manny well, he always walked under a leaf when I try to take a picture.(in a specific spot where I can't take the picture D: ) Then he walks right out as soon as I turn off my camera He was a good sport though

Excellent Ruth. My last sighting at my feeder was Sept. 22 which is really late. They are usually all gone by the 10th.

Hmmm - wonder if that means we're in for a mild winter

I was thinking the migration had begun as we've got some different ones at the feeders here...good to know I'm not imagining it

it looks like the archilochus colubris, or "ruby throated hummingbird.

over here, in Quebec, they leave for the south around Sept. 15th.

well done.

I did quite a bit of studying of the field books and I'm about as close to positive as I can be that it is a black chinned - we don't have Rubies here but I don't think the rubies get the same purple flash as this guy and the purple is only in a stripe and not the whole chin...[link] They have a different sound to their flight than the local Anna's and are squeakier in their chatter too.

I've never lived where all the hummers leave ): that must be kind of sad! We have Anna's year round here in California - with Rufous passing through spring and fall. I don't know if the resident Black Chinned pair will move on this fall, but they've been here all summer...

i've seen the ruby throated here for decades, and never seen one with purple throats.
they're definitely not the same species, but beautiful.

it is sad when they leave, but winter here is very cold, so they must go south.

I can only imagine how cold you get up there...I've never even lived where snow stays more than 24 hours. I feel guilty if I'm late with the nectar when it is rainy
