Description
Yes, I just whipped this up while I was doodling some clouds.. Then I was like, woah, I'll make a tutorial out of it. This tutorial is meant for people who want to make a 10 second background look decent. xD; It took me less then a minute to doodle these clouds up once I found the brush settings. Ummmm, yea. Sorry that I only made it for tablet users. D: I didn't have time to write a tutorial to make clouds with the mouse. Try just changing the size of your mouse and the flow %. It may do something helpful. I'm just here to help.Related content

hey great tutorial, did you know that you can fix those 'ugly edges' by going to 'spacing' in your brush settings and putting it on 1.
someones probably already said that here, but yeah, problem solved.
anyway, cheers, tut helped me greatly.

Kaykaykit, you are amazing!! Could you tell me how to do this with a mouse? I don't have a tablet and am hopeless with backgrounds... Thank you for creating such a wonderful tutorial though.

I just started working in Photoshop [CS3] 10.0, and now I have a tablet but it has a pressure sensitivity that I believed should have helped with this but the lighter I press the more thinner, and opaque it gets no matter what the size of the brush I am using or the flow and opacity.
Do you know a back rout to that? I have noticed that a lot of tablets nowadays have that quark about them.
I have a Genus MousePen tablet.

yes, that's what tablet pen sensitivity should do. what effect are you trying to get? using the pen tool is good for drawing lines which taper at the end. you can probably adjust the setting of that in the tools.

I did and it didn't do much. I have a different setting in the tools than you do. I couldn't get much. I followed you tut to the letter as best I could but I guess later versions took a lot of stuff out. T_T I am still trying though. But I keep running into dead ends. What version of Photoshop do you have again-and give me all the numbers and versions and decimals with it and they year because I might need to get the one you have.

Thnx-oh about the tablet. When I said the lines were thin when I let up on the pressure I meant they were like a pencil line thin. It did not fill up the size of the brush it was very solid but thin. That is what I meant. It does not make the effects that are shown on the distant clouds.

This would be fun to try out.
By the way; how do you adjust the pressure with a mouse? I gave my tablet to someone who could use it because I can't work with a tablet.
Also I am thinking of doing storm clouds but am unaware as to what colors to use. Could you upload a idea or color palette?

kaykaykit In reply to MarieanneMcKassion [2008-11-10 13:23:37 +0000 UTC]
sadly, mice don't have pressure sensitivity. and for colours, i'd recommend checking out some pictures of storms on google, and copy-pasting it into photoshop, then colour dabbing some of the colours on the picture.

Kay that make sense. I am still at a loss as to what type of storm colors I need or want. I have never done anything like that before.

Thanks for the wonderful tutorial; clouds have been my weak point for a while. I just wanted to ask a couple questions--which version of Photoshop do you have? I have 6.0 and cannot find the brush presets so I can't set my tablet to respond to pressure by darkening and lightening. Instead, when I press hard, the shape of the brush is larger. When I press lightly, the brush becomes very thin. I can't seem to find a way to fix this. I hope you can help me
Also, I don't mean to sound rude, but I believe there may be a couple spelling errors--are you interested in hearing what they are? If so, please ask me.
Thank you again for the beautiful tutorial. Your clouds are lovely and the tutorial is clear and concise. In fact, pretty much all of your art is adorable. Keep up the wonderful work.

kaykaykit In reply to Kayelei [2006-07-29 16:07:02 +0000 UTC]
I have version 8.0 (CS). You can't set your tablet pressure to make it darker/lighter the harder you press. It only works in size. The darker/lighter would work best in the Dodge and Burn tools.
Haha, I did make the tutorial very quickly, so sure, tell me the spelling errors. x3

Kayelei In reply to kaykaykit [2006-07-29 17:14:35 +0000 UTC]
Oh, yes, I saw you mention CS but I wasn't sure if that was version 8.0 or not. Hm, I must have misunderstood the tablet settings, so thank you for clearing that up!
Errors:
"Transparentness" should be "Transparency" towards the top left
"move towards the lighter clouds" in around the same area but on the right, should have "toward" without the "s". The reason people write this is because it is common in to say this in a lot of English "dialects," if you will, but it is not in itself correct English to write (in this case).
Underneath this, it says, "don't put it on to heavy" -- I think the adverbial form, "heavily," should be utilized here.
Everything else looks fine.
Thank you again for the wonderful tutorial and for the polite and helpful reply to my comment

Thanks! Unlike most people, I don't get totally mad when I get corrected. I want to fix the errors, I really do... But look at me. I'm lazy and a procrastinator, hah. I will see if I can get around to the changes soon. Hehe, but thank you for pointing them out. See what being out of school for the summer does to my brain?? and it will be even worse this fall since I wouldn't be taking english class lol.

About the ugly edges. Ive gotten those before but I can tell ya how to fix it!! It has to do with the brush spacing. You need to decrese the space so its always one continuous line. It does make the color of the brush more robust but lowering opacity or pressure even more gives you the same effect as before without having to go over it till its smooth and more opaque.
