In my HC, the Night Pride isn't the only lion pride that takes residence in the Tree of Life territory. However the Night Pride is made up of the royals that rule over the territory. Think of the Night Pride as a country's ruler and the leaders of the other prides like.. mayors or something. Still in positions of power but not the highest on the ladder.

Rani is about to give birth any day.

Kion is traveling to each of these prides in order to select a cub to betroth to their heir who isn't born yet. Kion selected a nice boy for the daughter he and Rani were expecting but when Rani gave birth, they were surprised to see a single cub: a son. They were both ecstatic and in love with their cub, but the Night Pride is only ruled primarily by females, so their firstborn wasn't eligible to be the heir. The pair decided to instead betroth him to a cub from the Day Pride (their sister pride basically). It's quite a bit farther away since they live in another territory altogether.

Fortunately, they get two girls in their second litter
