His parents were in love from a young age, but their parents didn't approve. They tried to stop the relationship by grounding them, but they always managed to sneak away and be with each other for a while.
Kifa (his mother) was betrothed to a prince in a faraway land, while Mganga (his father) was just a simple shaman's son.
When they grew older, Kifa rejected her betrothed for her beloved Mganga and soon grew pregnant with his child. In retaliation, Kifa's parents killed Mganga and even threatened to kill her unborn. She convinced her parents to let her keep him, so long as she married her intended.
When Mwana learned of what his grandparents had done, he was furious. It wasn't fair that his father had to die just because he wasn't of royal blood. Mwana decided to leave. To be better than them. He wasn't able to convince his mother to come with him, so from a young age he was forced to hunt for himself.
He eventually settled in a territory now known as the Pride Lands, where he met his future mate.
