Description
Has anyone else seen and loved this old cartoon? 'Alfred J.Kwak' (the J was for Jonathan in english, Jodokus in Dutch) was my most favourite cartoon when i was younger, then it just disappeared but after some research i discovered it was a German-Japanese cartoon- Alfred J. Kwak was based on a theatre show by Herman van Veen who also wrote and performed the theme music for the cartoons. The cartoons were drawn by Harald Siepermann.see, alfred was this duck who's family died in a car crash and was raised by a mole, Henk, in the nation of Great Waterland. and shit, he has to deal with some pretty heavy stuff in his life, and some pretty good stuff too. throughout the series he grew up and travelled, eventually meeting Winnie, a black duck, escaping from persecution in her home country, and falling in love. it was so sweet. he also has to deal with the eventual death of his stepfather and political strife in waterland caused by Dolf, his rival who among other things, begins the fascistic 'Kraaienpartij' (Crows' Party) and takes Winnie hostage. but that main thing is that alfred always tries to be noble and kind in a way that makes me want to cry, even when he discovers dolf hiding interracial roots as well as harbouring racist tendecies, he tries to offer his help and understanding, though dolf mistakes this for an insult.
there's this line from the english translated theme song that goes 'he seldom wears a frown, you can never keep a good duck down' and it makes me realise how much i love that cute little duck, smiling and singing in a world as shitty as ours.
Alfred J. Kwak was broadcasted in The Netherlands, Germany, Italy, Spain, Israel (where Alfred was re-named with the unusual first name She'altiel), Finland, Serbia and Sweden as well. please, if anyone else has loved this show as much as me or has any info about dvds or somesuch, let me know.

One of my first childhood experiences. (I'm german, too.)
I first heard Alfred's adventures on audio cassettes and then moved on to books and the series. The whole series has come out on DVD recently, and it still holds up for the most part.
I heard there were plans for a feature film, dealing with Alfred's and Winnie's son, but to this day, it hasn't been realized.

I've seen all 52 episodes in German now, and I love love love this series! Dolf (Kra in German) is such an utterly fascinating character (and that's coming from a German! No, I'm no nazi) Plus, Dolf looks much more like Napoleon anyway Dolf is justice! I wished he and Alf were still friends!

Great pic ^^ Series about Alfred was also aired in Poland in strange version - English dub and one man, kind of voice-over, who read dialogues. Anyway, it was great anime. What a shame it was aired only one time in my country (around 1993) and it's hard to find any episodes now -,-

Yeah. Of course i remember that show. It was great. ^^ It is great.
But in Germany they changed Dolfs name of course. Into Kra.
Those cowards. -.-
But i approve it. ItΒ΄s only natural to repress negative experiences.

Hi there,
I was looking for some Alfred art, and found yours!
It's cool.
When I was little I thought the show was a little scary, and now that I'm older I like how the creator used several world problems (like discrimination, and threats towards nature) into this show.
I don't know much about it (yet) but I'm doing a powerpoint presentation about it at school.
If you still want information (cuz this deviantation is already two years old) I can send it too ya.
Ow by the way, this deviantation is awesome!
*I just gotta fav it*
I didn't know Dolfje was hitler in the show when I was little, ..

'Alfred J. Kwak' was actually a Dutch/Japanese animation rather than a German/Japanese. It was conceived of by the Dutch artist Herman van Veen and it broadcast in many countries around the world. It was indeed a great show, a lovely piece of nostalgia. The animation also had many political untertones.

Ah yes, we had this in the UK too [look it up on Youtube, there's like a ten minute preview, though the English dub is kinda horrible IMO but still, damn, I need to look high and low for VHSs]. So now I'm downloading it as a torrent in Finnish...
The style in this fanart is pretty nice ;D

the last ep of alfred is dolf kidnapping Winni and having her on gun point. With the help of prof paljas (the ice bear) alfred finds dolf and returns him to the police at home alfred, selebrates his birthday with all his friends including his father Henk.
Maybe not all eps where aired in america?

thirsday this side is upgraded with a alfred cartoon (it is dutch)
but a moving dutch speaking alfred j kwak is better then no alfred at all.
And Henk didn't die the serie ended with dolf taking winie hostage and was arrested in the end.
Henk said even in that episde that dolf is luckly he could have gotten the dead penalty by what he did.
[corupction, weapon smungel ect.

I love that cartoon! I used to watch it all the time when I was a kid! The characters are so much better than those in the average cartoon, they really have... well, character. Dolf is one of my favorite characters from the show, along with professor Paljas and Pikkie (the magpie? I have no idea what the English names are). The episodes about the Kraaienpartij were so scary @.@ But they don't show it here anymore, though I believe Herman van Veen still does the theatre show occasionely. I'm Dutch dammit, Alfred is Dutch, they should bring it back on Dutch television! I believe that in Germany, the whole series is available on DVD. That probably doesn't help you anything, but it means there may be hope for an English version
*ahum* Right, about the art. I really like the way you used perspective in the top part to make the painting look really big. And Winnie looks so cute ^^

Man, another awesome-sounding cartoon that I've never heard of! It sounds really good, I like cartoons like that. And that's probably because I've grown up in Sweden, were we have even more socially realistic childrens stuff. Like the most popular Swedish children's comic: Bamse. Bamse is a socialistic bear who lives on some hills together with his wife and four kids (all of his kids are "home-made" and born during the comic, no wimpy Disney-style stork stuff here! His youngest daughter Brumma is by the way probably the only officially mentaly handicapped character in any children's comic, and is the awesomest character in the whole comic), his grandmother (who can kick a lot of ass if she feels like) and his two best friends: Skalman the turtle (who is an inventor, former drug addict and pretty much fucked up in the head) and Lille Skutt the rabbit (who also has a wife and a son). Bamses grandmother cooks a special honney that makes Bamse the strongest bear in the world for a short period of time, and together with his friends he fights capitalism, crime, racism, witches, pirates and stuff like that. It's a great and classic comic that has deep character design and psychologically realistic villains, and good values. And some very, very fucked up shit, like trolls and wizards and stuff.
Well, sorry to bore you like that. It's really a great picture, and I adore the colouring. And that duck girl looks a lot like a duck version of Dhalua form Tom Strong, and that's cool. Well done!
