Description NOTE: These are robots that exist in the cannon of the universe. So if you have a non-Stellarmassian robot, feel free to disregard this.

Pigbot!

Robots: A Reference

Species: Robot (Roe-bots) Robots plural. ‘Tinmen’, ‘Bots’, and ‘Droids’ as slang.
Homeworld: N/A
Language: Binary
Classification: Robotic (non-living)

Robots are probably the most varied ‘race’ in the galaxy in terms of form and function. Robots tend to range from 8 to 2 feet in height, with 6 feet as an average, and usually weigh 100-900 pounds. The majority are humanoid, and resemble a Human or general Humanoid race (Mineks, Kalarians, ect), with the usual head/torso/2 sets of arms and legs configuration. These types of Robots can and do wear clothing, in order to blend in better with other races. However, Robots also come in a mind-boggling amount of variations. Some may resemble small scale Mechs, some could look almost like little trash cans, and some can even look like a robotic version of an alien, or even be full scale androids! If you can come up with it, there’s probably a Robot out there that fits your imagination. Of course, Robots are primarily built around their function. A guard or a law enforcement bot will most likely be more intimidating and larger compared to a Robot built to heal people. Androids make up a good third of the total Robot population, and Androids will completely resemble the race, alien, or animal they are mimicking. They only way to really tell an android from their organic counterpart is scan them with a type of metal detector or x-ray machine. It’s important to note as well that Cyborgs do not count as a type of Robot, as Cyborgs are organic beings with cybernetic parts installed, while a Robot are built.

The history of robots is fairly long, stretching back a few hundred years, so it will be condensed in a short paragraph. Robots were of course, always around, mainly functioning in factories. However, they lacked an A.I, and were not sentient. Several species like Humans and Kalarians began to experiment with robots and Artificial intelligence. When these advanced races pooled their technology and knowledge together, the general A.I technology advanced enough where the idea of sentient robots was feasible. The first few fully sentient robots were originally manufactured to assist doctors in hospitals, watch over children, and help around the house, and were considered somewhat of a domestic appliance. Of course, the various militaries began their own experiments with their own version of sentient robot, as well as other corporations and businesses. Suddenly, there were a lot of sentient robots, with the ability to think and feel, scattered all over the galaxy, employed in a variety of jobs. Robots back then were essentially ‘immortal’, and could be backed up and replaced several times. Of course, Robots were not viewed as an actual race, but rather as appliances, and were usually barred from public places (unless they were built to be a cook or other public service droid). Many species viewed robots as things that will replace workers in the work force, and rallied to have sentient robots banned from being manufactured. Of course, they could not simply just ‘get rid’ of the robots currently employed, as it raised all sorts of ethical dilemmas. So the leading heads behind the main major robotics corporations offered a compromise. They would make robots ‘mortal’, as in their A.I chip can never be backed up, and once that chip is gone the robot ‘dies’. Robots were also programmed a lifespan, and will permanently shut down within a 90-120 year time span. Robots were from then on built with a finite fuel supply, ensuring that they will need to ‘eat’, like any other race in the galaxy. The general public accepted this compromise, and robots today are semi-free. They are still built for specific jobs and purposes, but they cannot be made to do anything, and it’s now illegal to discriminate against them just because they are a robot. You’ll still see plenty of racism around though, and there’s still a debate if A.I can be considered true sentience among the people.

Robots can and do ‘eat’ food, that is, if they have a movable jaw and internal cavity to house it. Most Robots built today are built with an internet mini ‘furnace’ type component, which atomizes food particles and converts it to renewable energy. They can also plug themselves into electrical sockets to recharge their internal batteries, though eating is much more efficient when stuck in a remote wilderness, and there no electrical outlets to be found. Robots do like alcohol, though they are not capable of becoming drunk or receiving a ‘buzz’. As most Robots have taste receptors, they only tend to drink for pleasure. An odd fact is that robots ‘charge’ faster when consuming alcoholic beverages and it’s rumored that a robot could essentially exist only on alcohol, if they should choose to do so.

As robots are non-organic, they do not reproduce. Robots can though, ‘feel’ love, though it’s not the love of say, a spouse. Instead it’s more like the love one would feel for a dear friend, so thus, robots do not pair off, either with another race or with themselves. Since robots do not reproduce, they instead must be manufactured. There are several different companies on different worlds that do make them, but the basics remain the same. Robots are made for specific tasks, such as exploring units, medic bots, law enforcers, ect ect. But once their primary function is installed, they are granted Artificial Intelligence, installed by a super computer housed in all robotic factories. They are given personality traits, randomized mind you, in order to make robots easier to be around and interact with. Proper checks are in place to say, for example, keep a robot assigned a ‘brave’ trait from also having a ‘coward’ trait installed at the same time. The end result is an artificial mind that is nearly identical to that of other sentients. Robots can think and feel most emotions, and they all have distinct and unique personalities. Once the manufacturing process is complete, the newly finished robot, with AI and personality traits installed, is given their assignments and shipped where they need to be. Each robot is assigned a serial code of numbers and letters for a ‘name’, but they are free to choose a proper name for themselves, which they can register with the company that made them. As required by law, the chips that house the robot’s artificial mind can not be backed up or duplicated, and once that chip goes, the robot officially ‘dies’. This was put in place to keep robots on the same line with other sentients, mortal and finite, which aids in sentient-robot relations.

Robots primarily speak Binary and other computer languages, though they can learn other languages very fast. In fact, robots are commonly used as translators, as learning another language is as simple as just listening to another species talk for a few hours.

Robots do not have a home world, nor do they have any sense of government or representation. Robots however, tend to list the world they were manufactured as a ‘home world’ when filling out paperwork. Robots also, do not have a representative on the Galactic council. Robots tend to be extremely varied as well, when it comes to socialization. The majority tend to be loners, and rarely take company among organic sentients, while a small minority enjoys social interactions. Some Robots may be racist, withdrawn, kind, intelligent, stubborn, silly, ect ect, and since they are so varied it’s impossible to make a generalization. The same thing goes for religion and values, and the best advice when dealing with Robots is to expect the unexpected.

I still need to make a proper Robot character. XD So many possibilities for designs.
