Thank you very much! I might try A2 then to begin with and see how I find that!
I'm going to stick with my staedtler pencils because i feel comfortable with them, but i might invest in a tombow mono mini eraser
I really like your way of working it makes a lot of sense, I'll stop printing out the picture on my rubbish inkjet printer haha! And looking at that illusion has made me question all my drawings hahahaha, it's so cool! But yeah I'll let you know how it goes Thank you very much, you've been such a help!!!
Have a great day!
Dan

The Tombow is a must have Danny. Get a scalpel and cut it to a fine edge. It take a bit of practice to get a feel for it though, so tread carefully. I looked through your gallery and for your age you're producing some great work. Check out Redfox999. You'll find him in my gallery. He's only in his early 20s but producing some of the finest work I've ever seen.

I'll be sure to have a practice before i start haha and thanks haha feel like i'm going to step it up now and see what i produce when i spend 10x as long on a piece. And yeah just checked him out he is amazing! He uses charcoal not graphite though am i right? is that just a preference thing?

Charcoal is a different skill that graphite. I just make a complete mess when I use charcoal!!!

Beautifully done. How long did this take you from start to finish? (If you don't mind my asking).

I think the reason I love this picture so much is because she looks like a little girl I know and the picture is just so pretty. I love it.

Attention to detail and these tools:
Pencils: Faber Castell 9000 series B, 2B,4B,8B. I have three of each of these pencils, sharp, medium and blunt. Practice using various pressures to achieve different values. I use a Staedtler Mars Lumograph 8B (for black backgrounds). Tombow mono mini eraser, scalpel (to cut Tombow to a sharp edge) Putty eraser or Blu Tack, Small & medium tortillions and blending stumps, Donegan OptiVISOR jewellers magnifiers, Bristol board 250gm.
I use the grid method and when I'm working on a drawing I'm pretty much doing it grid by grid. My reference is on a computer screen and whichever grid square I'm working on is zoomed into on the screen. That way, the values that surround it don't distract me and I can really concentrate on every detail within that grid square. I spend quite a while studying the grid square I'm about to draw before working on it. This get's my eyes tuned into the values and composition within that section.
Do a Google search for Edward H. Adelson. There's a chess board illustration he's done that demonstrates how a value will appear to change depending on what is next to it. Square A and B are the same value in this illustration.
Hope that helps.
