Wow - all of your drawings are really, really great! Also the amount of time you invest in one picture is insane !
I am just starting to re-ignite my drawing engine because I didn't draw at all for like 15 years (I don't know why - I think I was too busy with other stuff) - but it seems like I improve a lot from work to work (skills are coming back yay! ) if you would like you could check out the stuff I did in the last few weeks (only 2 drawings by now - but the number should be rising)!

Hi Marcel,
Here's a list of what I use and some tips.

Pencils: Faber Castell 9000 series B, 2B,4B,8B. I have three of each of these pencils, sharp, medium and blunt. Practice using various pressures to achieve different values. I use a Staedtler Mars Lumograph 8B (for black backgrounds). Tombow mono mini eraser, scalpel (to cut Tombow to a sharp edge) Putty eraser or Blu Tack, Small & medium tortillions and blending stumps, Donegan OptiVISOR jewellers magnifiers, Bristol board 250gm.

I use the grid method and when I'm working on a drawing I'm pretty much doing it grid by grid. My reference is on a computer screen and whichever grid square I'm working on is zoomed into on the screen. That way, the values that surround it don't distract me and I can really concentrate on every detail within that grid square. I spend quite a while studying the grid square I'm about to draw before working on it. This get's my eyes tuned into the values and composition within that section.

Do a Google search for Edward H. Adelson.  There's a chess board illustration he's done that demonstrates how a value will appear to change depending on what is next to it. Square A and B are the same value in this illustration.
Hope that helps.

Keith.

Encouraged by the comment you left on my profile page, I wanted to leave you a few words.

I was impressed by the water drops. Their texture, with all the dark and light spots and the reflection of a room / camera is almost impossible to even begin imagining. Yet, somehow, you managed to put it all into a drawing. I was also impressed by their sheer number and the sharpness of it all.

I look forward to your next deviations

how did you manage to get such a deep black in the background? Did you use a black colour pencil or like charcoal or something?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

keithmore2000 In reply to DannyHouse [2015-02-01 22:30:54 +0000 UTC]

I used a Staedtler Mars lumograph 8B.

Ahhh okay that's what I use, what gsm is the paper you used? I use 110gsm paper and the 8B creates a dotty look rather than a completely black finish as you have achieved

keithmore2000 In reply to DannyHouse [2015-02-01 22:44:21 +0000 UTC]

I use 250g/m Bristol board. It takes practice to get a smooth black. You've got to push hard and go over the same spot around four times. Bristol board takes more abuse than 110gsm paper.
Hope that helps.

Ahhhh okay, i've got some bristol board in the post as we speak haha! yeah thank you that really helps! I just wanted to ask one more thing, what do you think i could do to improve my drawing of water (see picture), I am planning to start an A3 piece of a girl under falling water. I aim to make it my best drawing yet and so spend a long time on it 100 hours+, and I am aspiring to get a finished product something similar to your drawing here. But before I start could you give me a tip or two on how to draw at such a high level of detail, I feel you're the artist to ask haha!

This is the most similar drawing i've done to the one i plan starting, but it only took 11 hours haha

Your Paul Cadden inspired drawing is good Danny. Well done, you've got real talent. Paul and most other hyperrealists work at a much larger scale than A3, I only like A3 because it's considerably more difficult to get all the detail into a small area.
Here's what I use and some tips.

Hope that helps and good luck with your next drawing, let me know how it goes.
