Oh, they do like Peanut Butter! Umm maybe they would like PB&J mixed? Just a thought! Great capture!

I tried PB&J on the tanagers one year...they were...um...skeptical. Given time, I think they'd come to enjoy it.

I would love to see a skeptical bird! Sounds cute, I can sort of imagine how they would be. Take a beak full and then cock their head to the side thinking about it. That is what I visualize! I enjoy your photos and comments so much. You are knowledgeable, creative, and so willing to share what you know and your experiences. If you had a blog, I would follow it. Seriously.

Thank you!
I think the best expression of skepticism was when I decided to put a dish of moistened dry catfood out for the crows. After standing around, discussing it for a half hour or so, one of the flock edged forward, leaned waaaay out and took an experimental nip, then jumped back as though the dish was full of rattlesnakes. Eventually they decided that the stuff was ok to eat....not the trusting sorts, those crows!

Now that is funny! These kinds of experiences would be interesting to people who love birds, in general.

I rather liked my crows....I don't think anyone else in the neighborhood did, since they would hang out in the trees starting at sunrise and make a racket until I brought them their cat food. They were, however, very good at keeping the local cat population away. Our poor old underachieving cat (Gomer) was terrified of them, probably for good reason.

I think crows, ravens, and Myna birds are awesome. My uncle J R used to have a myna bird that would say, "Jay's a dirty bird." It was so cute! I didn't know that about cats and crows though. Crows are very verbal and well we know about "The Raven", right?

I like ravens. I had one show up in my yard in Santa Fe...absolutely unafraid of me. I was wondering if he was an escaped pet or maybe if they are hatched unafraid of people and have to learn caution. Either way, I introduced him to Ritz crackers and showed him how to soften them in the bird bath.

One of the neighborhood legends up there involved the people across the street: long ago their kids found an abandoned raven fledgling who they promptly took home and adopted. Later, the raven would follow them to school and wait out in the playground for them for recess and the walk home. I'd bet that they had every kid in Santa Fe wishing they had a pet raven.

Aww, that is sweet! When I was a kid my grandparents who lived on a farm had 2 pigeons. Now I wish I had wondered about how they got them because you normally don't see pigeons out in the country, they are city dwellers you know?
One was the normal color of pigeons the blueish grey and the other was a rust color. I had never seen a reddish pigeon before. They were well behaved. They actually had the "run" of the house but had their own little hutch with perches. I think that is where my love of birds began. At the time it just seemed normal that they had them. Now all the people who would have known are gone from this life.

The only problem with pigeons is that there are so many of them, which means they are highly successful.....I've known a few personally, and they seemed like good sorts. They're just fancy (and big) doves. I love the iridescence on their feathers! A good starter bird if you can't have a parakeet!

Other than being around them as a kid, I have never had one myself. I don't like creatures to have to be in cages to be kept. Even when it is for their safety, it bothers me that they have to be "jailed".

She got to go walkies with me after lunch (we shared a tuna salad wrap) which was a big adventure...lots of exciting things to investigate: dandelions, snapdragons, parsley and larkspur. She is still a little nervous and refused to get off my arm, but I think she really enjoyed her outing. In a little bit it will be time for her to help refill the jelly feeders...she gets to sneak a few nibbles of the stuff. The hummingbirds are very curious about her and will find excuses to zoom over for a quick closer look.

Wow, you have a wonderful way of expressing yourself. You paint such a charming mental picture with your words. She sounds so adorable. It sounds like she is a wonderful little companion, and "helper" too. Takes grape jelly nibbles for pay right? ss
