Description
Practical Traditional Paint Color Mixing TutorialI made this with my watercolors, but it can be used as a guide for acrylic paints and oil paints.
I had a very hard time with watercolors for a very long time. When I started reading websites and books on some color mixing techniques, it started to click. This is my small contribution to the community that will hopefully be of some value.
Update 28-10-07
Tweaked some readability issues
Gave some suggestions on other common names for the paints I recommended
Added a mini description on how to mix color progression samples

EDIT OMG a DD?! I am honored that =IBinsanity and ^bleedsopretty felt this would be valuable to share in this manner.

Although I'm more of a digital artist, I must say this tutorial is really useful! If I had read this before all my bad attempts at mixing watercolours, my school works would have looked a lot nicer!!
Maybe I'll even mess around a bit next weekend

That looks like it took a lot of time ^^. I'm a disaster at mixing colours, never get the colour I want and I'm never able to create the same colour 2 times ><. I'm most definately going to use this, it's very useful, well done! DD well deserved.

This is very helpful. :3 I'm also happy that you did this in watercolor<3 Watercolor is always seen as hard to do, but if you get use to it, it's not that bad.
Lovely job overall with this tutorial<3

Great! Thanks. Watercolor I believe is no harder than any other paint. It gets into people's heads sometimes that they can't do it. I just hope this tutorial gets some people over those hurdles. It did me.

It's well structured, well written and full of useful information. Well done.

Looks incredibly useful so far! I'll have a closer look at it when I get a chance.
Problem with my little color set; 12 basic colors and no names. ^^

Oh that is an excellent question! You can still do this, even if you do not know the names of the colors.
First, take your yellows and in your set. Mix each an equal part of yellow with every an equal part of blue in your set. Write down which colors made the green. You will notice a different green with each mix. One of these will be clearer and brighter than the others. You can say this yellow is your "green-yellow" or Hansa Yellow. The blue is your "green-blue" or Pthlalo Blue.
Though I would caution you for calling these colors exact names. If you ever buy another set and the colors are different, it maybe confusing.
Now take the other yellow and mix it with the different reds in your set, in the same way you did with yellow and blue. You should get a nice bright orange from one of the mixes. Those are your "orange-yellow" or Cadmium Yellow and "orange-red" or Cadmium Red. Finally, take the other red and mix it with the remaining blue and see how bright of purple you get. Mix the red with the "green-blue" blue to make sure that is a dull color.
Once you complete this, you should know which colors are great for mixing green, orange and purple. I hope this is clear, let me know if you have a question.
