. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

I'm also entering this piece as a submission for the DesignnHQ 's Magazine Contest here: Designn Magazine Cover Art Contest !
EDIT: This is a smaller file, but I do have a larger original copy available as well!

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Yep. I definitely have an obsession with hair!
This piece was inspired by the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis), a phenomenon that I've always thought to be just beautiful and ethereal. I painted this piece following an idea of 'where the sky meets the sea', hence the strange glowing fishies and stars!

Hope you like it!

If you're looking for constructive criticism, I hope all positive feedback will suffice as constructive enough. I've been favoriting so many things from your gallery and each piece is an individual dose of enchantment- this is one of my favorites and since it doesn't have a critique yet, here goes!

Five stars for vision; I can hardly take my eyes off this piece- there's so much to inspect in detail, but the focal point is clear and the center of attention, which is illuminated perfectly to draw in the eye.

I can't say I've seen anyone draw with a style like this before- it reminds me of Art Nouveau, but it has a look so completely its own. Everything is curiously brought together in ways that spark the imagination. I don't think the subject has to be unlike anything ever done before to get five stars in originality; this is wonderfully unique as it is and as much originality as anyone need ask for.

Technique is fabulous! All of the elements coincide with a kind of perfection while the lines feel so free and loose at the same time. My favorite thing about this is the bright lines you use that give a shimmering effect. It's neat how the blending is so smooth and then some of the lines have an almost chalky texture. That's what I find most fascinating about so many of your pieces.

Overall impact is such a beautiful experience! I don't have any advice and as far as I can see there's nothing that I'd recommend improving on here. You have really special art and I hope whatever you set out to do with it is a success!

Thank you so much Taylor!

Can I just say in all honesty, I haven't been on in a few weeks and returning to find a critique in my notifications, and then going to read it, all I can say is that it has brought such a huge smile to my face I can't get rid of it.

You are far too kind and generous with your words and I'm just speechless!
Originality. Uniqueness. Style. Technique. All aspects of a work that an artist, or rather, myself, place so highly and can only dream of being able to be attributed with.
So to be told that you find my work original, unique and with a distinct technique, that has got to be one of the highest compliments you could pay me. To me, it's constructive in a way that amongst all of my experimentation and journey to find a style and originality, that I'm on the right track, and that is more than enough constructive criticism that I could ever ask for.

Thank you so much!

I really appreciate how your artwork is consistent and recognizable with your unique style. You captured the sense of the Northern Lights beautifully, especially with her aquamarine hair levitating around her. The background is simple, yet essential to really staging the goddess-like woman. The fish, one aspect I noticed only after reading your description, doesn't really add to the overall appeal of the painting for me, if anything, it distracted me slightly. I have seen these creatures throughout you other work, and I feel they were well placed there, but not here. I love recognizing your work, keep it up!

Beautiful painting! I love the colors; the combination of teal and gold looks fantastic, and the deep, more desaturated shadows in the middle bring them out beautifully! Lovely face and pose as well, and I like how the gold "wind stream" wraps around her in a way that kind of also looks like a dress.

Thank you so much! YES!! That's exactly it. I'm not sure if anyone else picked it out but it definitely was intended to be like a dress slipping off of her, just barely clinging onto her (the wind)

How'd you do the hair? :0
I've been wondering about that

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

kelogsloops In reply to TheInfiniteGlow [2015-05-06 17:00:39 +0000 UTC]

Ahhh! It's actually nothing spectacular or a specific technique. i feel a little silly by putting it this way, but I don't know how else to explain it

I just use really flowy lines.... is the best way I can put it haha.
I guess in my mind I see lines fit to the forms they create and the fluidity it brings to the piece. Like for this, I wanted the hair to be uplifting, rising, and to move the eye in a very slow, fluid and graceful kind of way. So my line work becomes loose, long and slowly curved rather than rigid and sharp or sudden turns and twists. It kind of emulates the motion and fluidity within the piece. I usually like to start by looking at the hair as individual lines to create direction, and I build upon that to create the forms and overall shape of the hair.

I'm sorry if none of that makes sense!!! I've made a youtube channel where I've put some of my videos where I draw hair if that helps a litte. Here's the link if that helps a little more

I read your description and when I read "where the sky meets the sea" it reminded me of a song.
It's titled "where the water meets the sky" on SoundCloud by Chet Porter.

And FANTASTIC artwork btw! It makes me feel so surreal!
