Lmao I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who always wondered why Ness wasn't allowed to do that when you come across the first pencil statue. I mean, it seems like it would've been a much simpler solution. X"D

Yeah, I'm pretty sure the general out-of-the-blue weirdness of an Iron Octopus (which is what the Iron Pencil statue was in Japan) also speaks to Itoi poking fun of this particular trope in video games.
I mean, in MOTHER 3 you're stopped from exploring certain areas because there's a colony of ants in your way and it looks like you might step on them. OH NOES.
