Description

This is a water moccasin (AKA cottonmouth). They always live near water and this one was deep, deep, in the swamp of the Silver River in Florida. Their bite will cause swollen tissue, intense pain, difficulty breathing, tissue death, and sometimes be fatal if not treated with antivenom. They also have been known to chase down humans on land and in the water, and drop out of trees into boats. Personally I have not observed this behavior (and have encountered many), but know honest people who have. However, they never run (slither) away from humans. If they hear or see you coming they take the position seen in this photo. Most of the bites happen to stupid humans who walk in the swamps barefoot or swamp people who toy with them to impress their girlfriends.
