Description
Note 6/17/15: Times change and methods change. I thank everyone who has faved this and are still faving. I still color without a lineart, but I do not do it the same way that I used to (as seen on the tutorial). I think the point I'm trying to make is this is only the start. This was the start for me and the start for some of you. Find a way you're comfortable in doing your art and improve it. Help yourself to evolve. I'm glad so many people are still using this as a guide, but that doesn't mean you should follow my tutorial exactly all the time for it to be right. Find a way that fits you. Keep improving!-Kenzichi
Note: Look through the comments or read the whole description before asking your question. It may have been answered already ;D

Revised 7/29/13
*Warning: long, tedious file* ;-;
A friend here wanted a tutorial on how I color my pics so here ya go!
-This is on PAINT TOOL SAI and isn't necessarily the CORRECT way to do this.
-This doesn't mean that it is only LIMITED to Sai. You can use whatever program you want. For photoshop, for example, instead of blending you can use SMUDGE.
-I don't use a lineart and instead just sketch my picture and color over it on a different layer.
-Ask questions if you need to
-I used one layer for most of my coloring. The only exceptions are the outline for the eyes, objects or hands (if they are in front of the body) and of course background and foreground.
-You can use as many layers as you want for this method. IT'LL STILL WORK.

In this tutorial, yes. Of course it doesn't always have to be a basic though.

It works with marker too. I just use brush a lot because it's smooth and nice I've used other brushes too so whatever you like to use, go for it!

I am having an issue with the over all opacity; my tool isn't as vivid as what the guide here is portraying. Any particular way I can fix that?

KENZICHII In reply to GloomyMarshmallow [2014-08-04 02:14:58 +0000 UTC]
Are you on Sai? All I can think of is make sure your density is high and your dilution is low. Those two can also make it seem like your opacity is down. Hope that helps!

Thank you for this guide. Since line arts are not really for my shaky hand. I tried this, but since I still working my way around Manga Studio I improvised on the blending and stuff, and here it is

Oh gosh, thank you so much for this. I was trying so hard to find a good technique to make pieces without lineart, but everything ended up being muddy and smudgy. I'm going to try this right now!

Moment I have another question
Know how many layers you do the painting?????
It is interesting to me ^^

KENZICHII In reply to mikuhatsunevocaloidT [2013-11-29 05:29:10 +0000 UTC]
It depends. If I'm only painting a person or two it's just one layer. If the picture has a complicated background I'll use more

Hello I loved your drawing what size you paint your painting??? And a page size you paint the top??? I loved your drawing ^^

KENZICHII In reply to mikuhatsunevocaloidT [2013-11-28 08:41:06 +0000 UTC]
Thank you! I don't have a specific size that I paint on. I usually start drawing on a 1000x1000 pixel canvas and it either grows or shrinks from there

did you use separated layers for the hair, skin, etc.???
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
KENZICHII In reply to Not-Sparkly-At-All [2013-07-27 19:55:48 +0000 UTC]
For the tutorial I only used a separate layer for the outline of the eyes and the background. Everything else was on the same layer.
Now I do everything in one layer.
