Description
Note 6/17/15: Times change and methods change. I thank everyone who has faved this and are still faving. I still color without a lineart, but I do not do it the same way that I used to (as seen on the tutorial). I think the point I'm trying to make is this is only the start. This was the start for me and the start for some of you. Find a way you're comfortable in doing your art and improve it. Help yourself to evolve. I'm glad so many people are still using this as a guide, but that doesn't mean you should follow my tutorial exactly all the time for it to be right. Find a way that fits you. Keep improving!-Kenzichi
Note: Look through the comments or read the whole description before asking your question. It may have been answered already ;D

Revised 7/29/13
*Warning: long, tedious file* ;-;
A friend here wanted a tutorial on how I color my pics so here ya go!
-This is on PAINT TOOL SAI and isn't necessarily the CORRECT way to do this.
-This doesn't mean that it is only LIMITED to Sai. You can use whatever program you want. For photoshop, for example, instead of blending you can use SMUDGE.
-I don't use a lineart and instead just sketch my picture and color over it on a different layer.
-Ask questions if you need to
-I used one layer for most of my coloring. The only exceptions are the outline for the eyes, objects or hands (if they are in front of the body) and of course background and foreground.
-You can use as many layers as you want for this method. IT'LL STILL WORK.

Takes practice. It took me forever to get linearts down actually (not that I'm saying I'm an expert on linearts lol). I just had to keep doing it. But I still love doing this method when I feel like it.

I know this is a kind of old tutorial, but I am INCREDIBLY happy to find this. I happened across it a while back while looking for something else, and now, several months later, I decided I wanted to find this again because I loved the look. It took me so long to find it, but I thankfully have!!! Brilliant tutorial.
One thing I didn't understand, though, was the mouth/nose. You colored them very darkly in the step with the low opacity, but when you turned it up again, they were much lighter. How exactly did this happen? *excuse my obtusity, please*
But I imagine I'l be using this tutorial soon! ^^

KENZICHII In reply to KatarinaWolffe [2011-07-17 15:58:05 +0000 UTC]
Great! I'm glad it can be of some use to you ^^
Oh, I see what you're saying. In step four, when I turned down the opacity, I say that you use a darker color like brown to do the nose and the mouth and that's what you saw when I turned up the opacity. When I turned down the opacity you saw my sketch which was very dark. The color you saw the nose and the mouth being when I turned the opacity back up is actually the color I used, brown.
You see I turned down the opacity for the layer that I was coloring the picture with and therefore you could see my sketch which was underneath. So it was the sketch you saw with the dark colors. I hope you get it
