Description
This is intended to be a very basic introduction to using shadows in DAZ Studio. I hope it helps someone. If you find any errors in this, let me know! I'm not perfect, and I'm still learning too!

Re-Edit: Thanks to =kjherstin and her suggestion of TinyURL, I now have a direct link to the lightset used in the tutorial. Find it here [link] (free site registration required). Thanks also to ~Lillyanna-Windmane for reminding me to do the link in the first place.

yes the software is free on the Daz website but for models and clothes you normally either find free on sharecg or Renderosity but you will probably have to buy something sooner or later

As a new user of Daz and an art major, seeing the difference in the settings makes a lot more sense to me then just reading it. Thank you for posting this!

Shadow softness is the key to using shadow-mapped lighting. Generally I use heavier (lower, 20-30%) shadows on my primary light source & lighter (higher, 60-100%) on the other lights. Generally I don't go below 20% softness with shadow-mapping.

Yeah, but it comes with a few free models, so you can at least try it and see if you like it.

I don't think the site exists anymore where I got the lights. I can't find it again anyway. I guess I need to redo this then with a lightset anyone can get.

I have followed your tutorial. Still I see no shadows within the scene nor in the rendering of the scene. What could be wrong?

Kethaera In reply to CherishedMemories [2009-06-24 02:11:40 +0000 UTC]
Can you screenshot the settings you used (select the light in the Scene tab, then go to your Parameters tab and screenshot the "shadow" section like what's in the tutorial) and also your render that had no shadows, then upload them into your Scraps and send me a Note with the link? Keep in mind that you won't see shadows in the preview, only in the actual render.

I only have one tiny suggestion.
Could you put a link to where those light sets are found?

Kethaera In reply to Lillyanna-Windmane [2008-12-07 21:55:37 +0000 UTC]
If you haven't checked back, I've now got a direct link to the lightset used, thanks to =kjherstin 's suggestion of how to it.

I had intended to do that, and, in fact, am still attempting to do that. However, the link is not a permanent URL but is php, and is throwing off DA's stupid text editer. As soon as I find a way to get it to properly link, I'll edit it in.
Meanwhile, if anyone has any suggestions on how to link to a URL with a php string that includes one of DA's emoticons, let me know! Regular html is not working, either.

you can paste in the url into [link] so it transform into something more dA friendly
