I once cut the tip of my finger off while chopping vegetables and my first remark was in fact "DAMNIT I HAVE TO CUT MORE ONIONS." >.>

Haha I can relate to this! Kinda... I was working as a nanny and was rocking the baby to sleep in my room. I got up to put him in his crib and stumbled and cut my toe (clear to the bone) on the bed frame... I started crying because I was getting blood all over my boss's white carpet!

Oh man this is FAR too accurate; I was doing dishes once and this heavy pottery dish with thin edges my mom had made before I was born was put at the bottom for some reason by my dad. Trying to pick it up enough to get my hand under it since it took up most of the sink, the edge of it snapped and scooped a chunk of my thumb out. My first thoughts were "OH GOD I BROKE THE ART-PLATE!"

I had a friend who cut off his palm with a deli meat slicer at work. Needless to say much meat needed to be thrown out afterwords once we found the chunk belonging to him

Oh, look, a story that further engraves into my mind the terrors of working in the deli department!
...No, really, seriously, I knew those meat slicers couldn't be trusted. Watching people use those scares me on a borderline phobic level. I don't think I'd ever be able to use one myself.

IronHeaver In reply to Ophelos [2012-10-09 03:15:25 +0000 UTC]
the one we use you got to have your hand on the meat to cut it, and under the blade to catch the slices, double danger!
Iv heard many horror stories working in a grocery store, but other then that one and my own I haven't been present for them

Yeah, my mother used to work at a bagel shop...I heard way too many horror stories about those kinds of slicers.

I could write a book on close calls, injury stories, and stories Iv heard but arnt sure if there true but they just might be. Its like one of the only three things I like about my job
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Ophelos In reply to IronHeaver [2012-10-09 05:53:31 +0000 UTC]
They probably are true, for the most part. You'd be amazed at the kind of accidents that can happen with machinery like that, and how common they are.
My mother also once worked at a thrift store where they had basically a big machine that made corded bundles out of loads of clothes in the back room. One day, one of the cords snapped, and whipped one of the workers across the face. Sliced his cheek wide open.
I'm happy my job doesn't usually involve crazy accidents like that...worst that can happen is that we get robbed.

lets see, off the top of my head of notable injuries from my work: Sliced off palm, one of our guys doesnt have a middle finger, one of our guys has pins in all his toes cause they got torn off, I got a nasty chemical burn from a broken garbage bag that had oven cleaner in it, im pretty sure someone got ran over by the power jack once.
No ones ever tried to rob us, though we do get shoplifters

Wow, all those injuries make your workspace sound like a disaster area. Doesn't surprise me, though.
We got robbed once...actually, no, make that twice, just only once recently. With a bomb threat. He left quietly, but the girl he gave the note to was only sixteen years old. All for not even two-hundred in cash...pathetic.

OH SWEET JESUS IN A MANGER!!
Seriously, I gasped pretty loud upon seeing that. Dude, the closest I EVER came to that was stapling my finger. But no need to panic (over the art cards) get the saved files and reprint them! THEN TAKE YOUR BLEEDIN' BEHIND TO THE HOSPITAL!! YOU GOT MORE ART CONVENTIONS TO GO TO AND YA CAN'T GO IF YOU BLEED TO DEATH, MISTER!!!
(don't worry, I read the author's notes but seeing THAT much blood sends me slamming on the panic button!)

I've actually seen this happen once before. It was in my high school art class. The dude cut off his finger, passed out, people were throwing up and screaming, they forgot to take the finger with them so it was just laying there for a while on the counter... It was quite horrifying.

That was my worst nightmare in woodcutting class back in the day. I was so paranoid around those saw machines...oh, you have no idea. Every time I got within two feet of one, I'd begin having horrible thoughts of losing my fingers.
Your story, however, is strangely hilarious at the same time it's completely horrifying. I'm sure it really wasn't funny at the time though. Augh.

"I never envisioned art class including so much carnage!"
I know that feel, though. Considering in my own high school art class one year, I was carving linoleum blocks to make block prints on a morning when I was particularly sleep-deprived, and forgot the golden rule of using linoleum-carving knives: Always carve away from yourself, not toward.
I ended up holding the block with one hand and carving toward that hand like a retard-- and, of course, the knife slipped. I ended up stabbing myself in my middle-finger nail, dead center. I had a V-shaped cut that went right through the nail. I'm surprised it didn't bleed more than it did. I had to keep a bandage on that finger for ages until the nail grew out...
