It's funny, with all your manipulated photos, this one is fairly straight on.... and it's STILL a deep, almost haunting image.
With the harsh light, the limited DOF blurring out the foreground/background, the face is set in space. The far away expression in the eyes and half open mouth give a strong sense that this person is far, far away, perhaps lost in another time, vowing that things will be different now.
The past is behind, the future is unknown, but....
