Description My friend Jeff. This was taken after his first operation for a brain tumor. He subsequently endured a second.

His motto was "Death is not an option."

He's a personal hero.

my son bears a similar scar from his own operation...
let's hear it for the survivors!

There are so many great things about this piece. It has an old world feel about its style....like an unfinished oil portrait, but then you've got the abstractness of the lines and blocks layered in there and I love the detail in the face and the subtle scar framing his face...the misfits skull tie made me chuckle and want to give this man a hug....so cool, so personal and he must be a real hero.

excellent portrait. he looks strong and proud, maybe in spite of or because of the circumstances. i love the deep dark areas, overlapping textures, and dramatic fractions of light-- all of it adds a complex amount of depth that makes it impossibly three dimensional.

nice textures but its so dark it almost leads me away. but of course the darkness works well for the condition he had.

simply perfect.. conveys so much power, while maintaining a grungy/dirty look, and a slightly creepy feeling.

again, im loving the patchwork sort of effect there.. i keep looking back at this and trying to think of what to say, but i just cant find the words.

Hey... thanks so much...

It's mixed media using a photo as a base (printed on various sheets of paper...that's what the lines are) then the rest is a reduction technique using oil color.

The Misfits thing was a happy accident. He just happened to be wearing it...

thanks again for the comments...

Hello,
I am curious, if you don't mind me asking, how you did that? Is it photoshop? or a mixed medium thing? The shot is awesome and one of the greatest i have seen in a long time. I really like the texture that it has and the various lines that go through it; it all works nicely with the subject matter. I don't want to go on and on about how great it is but i just wanted to say i really liked it.

Way to go Jeff!!! A brain tumor...and still photographs well
Plus, of course, what you do to the picture is pretty damn neat, too
