Description There was a time long ago when the land had no king and people did as they saw fit
They fell into oppression under a man named Sisera who ravaged their lives for twenty years. Then came the time of war, when the people rose up under a woman named Deborah. Led by the Spirit a hand of justice closed around this Sisera and he ran as his army fell to pieces.

He ran to the tent of woman whose shelter was thought safe haven for certainly she would hide him. That she would look away from the blood he spilled and lives he crushed. For who was she to talk? Just a woman...a tent dwelling woman of no consequence.

"Give me a drink and don't say a word"
And so she gave him milk and said not a word.

And as he slept in his arrogance upon her floor she took a tent peg and a hammer
and made sure his head never left the ground again...and her people were free

Her name was Jael and she lived in the time of the Judges.

I was just complaining that judith and her sword got all the attention, about time people started doing jael and the tent peg.

You did a chapter on Deborah! This is wonderful! I love Jael, she was 'twice-blessed'! (Judges 5:24)
How did I miss this lovely pic? Now I must go back and look through your gallery once again and find what I must've missed!

So glad you know the story....Jael is such a great story. Thank you for that...

Deborah herself will be soon enough. The whole book is going to take awhile.

Your retelling (both words and image) is both beautiful and enlightening. I don't know much of the bible and have never heard of this story.

Thanks so much...and most haven't. Obscure story in an often overlooked book, which is half the reason I'm doing it....

OOH! I know the story well, my friend is Jael, named for this woman. wow. The image is just perfect. Your comments that you are working thru the book of Judges reminds me (and I had totally forgotton) that I started a work on psalm 139. Hmm, might go and dig it out and see how good/bad it looks now. (this was 20 years ago!) Look forward to seeing more of yours.

That's my favorite Psalm....wow. I'd love to see it...

That so made my day....I'm really glad you like it. Thank you. The fact that you know it and that you have a friend who is named after her makes it all the better....

The comments gave me good bumps, sometimes you tell the better story with your words that you could ever with your images. these two fit in together quite nicely.

*shivers*

I admire your artistic view and approach, and also the character development. It creates an interesting image and feeling. What are the steps you take to produce an image like this? Is it all digital manipulation?...you stated it was an oilgraph on wodden panel, always interested in procedure.

kevissimo In reply to JaspersInferno [2006-11-01 21:05:16 +0000 UTC]

Thanks so much for that....
It's all done with traditional materials. Essentially:
shot on film (medium format)
traditionally printed
archivally bonded to a custom made gessoed panel
over painted with oil color

There's no digital work at all

JaspersInferno In reply to kevissimo [2006-11-01 23:53:40 +0000 UTC]

Thats great. I was hoping that your work wasn't digital. I would not be as impressed if the picture was done digitally. I don't like digital manipulation most of the time. I like organic process mixed into different mediums.
