Description Right out of the 1940's - A Curtiss P40 meets up behind a Mitsubishi J2M Raiden in the skys over, eh, somewhere...

A couple of 3D models I built a few years back... Of course, a little tracer fire from the P40 could be nice... Perhaps in the animated version maybe?

The picture shows an early P-40B/C attacking a J2M3 'Jack' at medium altitude. Big mistake if pilots are both skilled. 1941/2 meets 1944/5! Quite improbable. However both were developed from the start of the Pacific war to the very end, so in that sense they are contemporary designs in the broadest sense only. In 1940 Mitsubishi was tooling up for Raiden production but unlike the P-40, it took until 1944 to see combat.
With the P-40 the very opposite: Take the Curtiss P-36 Mohawk and just install the inline Allison in place of the radial engine. Presto! You're in time for Pearl Harbor with new P-40s.

The P-40 would be unable to climb with the Jack. It's no good higher up anyway.
The Raiden could loop onto the Kittyhawks' tail, no sweat. Its 4x20mm cannons can more than deal with the P-40B with its 30 and 50 Cal MGs.

Both have poor rear view but the elevator indicates the J2M will evade the attack.
The P-40 can't match the power of the Jack. Even the late-war lightened P-40N Warhawk can't accelerate or climb with it. The Jack could do anything it could do and higher up too. It could even dive with it!

The only advantage the Curtiss has is production quantity which means nothing 1 on 1.
But lack of production defeated Japans late-war fighters perhaps more than the dogfights did.
What was it, over 12,000 P-40s vs half a thousand J2Ms?

Ta! I'm happy with the render, and the photoshopped "old photo" effects I think helped take the CG feel out of the image a little more.

Its a funny story - The P40 in the background was a model I built over a *decade* ago that just needed some textures to be finished and instead ended being put in that "I'll do that another day, I have another 3D model I want to build now" WIP heap. A decade later I needed something to go with the Japanese aircraft - I find it on a backup drive and it takes me a measly 20 minutes to finish the textures... How sad. lol! :-D
