Description
I've had several people ask how I make the little, 'flat' felt plush toys I upload every now and again, so here's a tutorial explaining the basics. These plush toys are very fun and easy to make - as well as cheap. So if you're new to plush toys, these might be a good start if you want to work your way up. I hope the tutorial is at least easy enough to follow.
Here's finished versions of plush toys I've made using these steps:

I don't have enough knowledge on machines to know about side-stitches the way that I've done it here, since I've been looping them around the edge of both pieces. It's honestly far more easier to make these by hand anyway, given the size.

Do you recomend that it gets turned inside out to hide the stiches, or leave it the way it is? Do you prefer to paint the plushie before it is stuffed?
One more question, How long does it usually take to create a plushie (ie. axel, saix)?

Does it really matter what kind of paint you use or is there like a specific kind?

where do you get all your materials? I know where to get felt but not the stuffing...
and do you know of any other materials that don't wear out too easily? plz and thank you!

KeyshaKitty In reply to Sobaku-no-Sarah [2008-05-03 04:43:51 +0000 UTC]
You have to research that yourself, I'm afraid, as I don't know where they sell stuffing in the states. Try a local craft store.
As for materials, this was made as a basic one for those wanting to make basic plush toys. The felt will hold the shape nicely because it's so basic. I sometimes use polarfleece for more complex plush toys, which won't wear out like felt will BUT I don't know if it will hold this basic shape as well, which is why for this pattern, I would advise using felt.

This tutorial is very helpful. I should try making a plush some time... I have a question. Do you stitch by hand for these plushes, by machine, or both, and if by both which one do you preferer or think is better? I'm going to fave this... It's very nice! Me likes!
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
KeyshaKitty In reply to Shokomon [2008-05-02 03:45:17 +0000 UTC]
It's hand stitched, as it goes around the outside of the two pieces and holds them together there, rather than inside the fabric more (like how you would sew clothes).

Shokomon In reply to KeyshaKitty [2008-05-02 04:51:59 +0000 UTC]
Kay, but does doing it that way keep the plushie teogether better? Also, would it be a bad idea to try and machine-sew the plushies or is it doesn't matter?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
KeyshaKitty In reply to Shokomon [2008-05-02 05:00:13 +0000 UTC]
These are designed to be hand sewn. I wouldn't know what they'd be like machine sewn.
