Description
The vast distances imperial forces are supposed to cover, either on the defense of the imperium or on the offense makes a good logistical network a top priority. While of the defense, the imperial forces can make use of depot-fortresses and a train network, the troops still need the supplies where they are. Even more, when at a distance of these supply-hubs.
Conventional trucks are certainly available for the military, but experience has shown that the transports nearly always need some form of protection from ambushes or drone strikes.
Enter the Onager, which entered service five years ago and is now one of the mainstays of imperial logistics groups and has spawned a plethora of variants.
As a basic vehicle, the Onager features a rugged 8x8 wheeled chassis, making it reasonably fast and maneuverable on streets, while being able to enter difficult terrain, if need be. It is particulary well suited to navigate the wasteland separating the imperium from the khanate.
The cabin is quite large and has place for up to six persons. A driver and a vehicle commander are the minimal rquirement, though usually a gunner is also present. Three passengers can be housed as well, sometimes assistants or escort troopers. Fully enclosed, the armored cabin is NBC proof, comes with an overpressure system and is armed against small arms and machinegun fire up to 15mms.
In combat scenarios, an infrared jammer, decoy/smoke launchers and an active defense system are usually mounted.
Surprisingly, the basic Onager is very well armed, featuring a 7.62mm machinegun in a simple shielded mount, a 40mm automatic grenade launcher and a 12.7mm machinegun, both in remote weapons stations. The grenade launcher usually is loaded anti-drone ammunition and either flashbang or HE grenades. Both weapon stations are stabilized and can be easily fired on the move by the gunner and the commander. The third weapon station with the medium machinegun required one passenger to use it, has no stabilization, but can be fired from within the cabin.
Basic Onagers have an enclosed cargo space, able to transport almost everything, from pallets of ammunition to containers featuring warm underwear.
There is a dedicated communications and command variant, used with several formations at battalion level, featuring an enclosed cabin with working space, communictions and other digital equipment for the modern battlefield. It is called FuFΓΌ (Funk and FΓΌhrung).
A bulk-cargo variant featuring an internal crane system was introduced along the main vehicle. It is, aside from being an Onager, pretty unassuming. This is also true for the tanker featuring a self-sealing tank module, which is armored to protect against small arms or shrapnel.
Another crane-equipped variant features a large recovery crane, which helps field repair units to facilitate quick engine-swappings or tow damaged vehicles.
Artillery and air-defense formations use a radar variant, whose sensors can track airborne movements and assist in the deployment of friendly drone systems.
A dedicated medical evacuation version was also recently introduced. Featuring an armored compartment, this module can transport four prone or seven sitting patients, as well as a nurse and basic medical facilities to stabilize the wounded. Passengers in the cabin are often medically cross-trained personall to aid the nurse.
Armor of the Medevac module and the weapons are unfortunately necessary, as the fighting between imperium and khanate is often bitter and merciless.
As for the artillery, the recent shift to a more mobile military saw the emergence of several armed variants of the Onager for use in the support units. Chief among them is the Onager 155, a module featuring a long-barrelled, fully-automated 155mm howitzer, necessiating the removal of both remote weapons stations.
Another version is the multiple launch rocket system, featuring 32 150mm rockets, while the drone artillery variant houses either eight long range loitering kamikaze or recon drones or 50 medium-range swarm drones to attack lightly-armored targets or infantry. Great hopes are placed in this version, but it has yet to see active combat.
Also a new module is the long-range anti-armor variant, housing twelve heavy anti-tank missiles, clearly intended to replace older tracked units.
Intended to protect all these are two variants, one air/drone defense sporting small search and targetting radars and a 35mm gatling gun, while the second carries an armored cabin and a small turret, housing a machinegun and a short-barrel 50mm autocannon. Control units and room for four additional personnel is made to act as dismounts if need be.
