The leader in mixing nostalgic design and innovative tech, Arginn Red has created the “Red 38 Spec/S”. A unique .38 special revolver with a 20 gauge shotgun chamber, this was done for defensive purposes for home defense and for pistol hunters in the woods which are generally home to dangerous game. With its beautiful chrome finish, 14k gold inlays and meticulous attention to detail, this weapon seems to attract a certain type of gun buyer, usually the finer gun collector or a collector of older style and nostalgic pieces or a shooter that just likes the thrill of firing a revolver. This weapon really wasn’t meant for use in any sort of combat. It has a small ammo capacity and is slower to reload. It is also a tad larger and thus heavier than most, smaller sidearms resulting in more chaos when moving.

For anyone wanting to use its advantages in light combat it is best to only use this weapon under emergency, last ditch efforts. If fighting an armored foe, either run like hell in an unpredictable zigzag pattern while ducking and dodging or just crawl in the fetal position and kiss your ass good bye. If you are in “reckless abandon” mode and have no care of one’s self, try to rush your opponent while shooting and when close enough, use the shot shell as that can be an intimidating tactic no matter what weapons are being used. That is not always the best course of action though, prudence and thought out tactics may and usually are the better choice and keep you alive and victorious (sometimes). Last but not least (I think), practice at the range A LOT. You really need to make every shot count! The slower reloading will leave you open to die without contest.

Pease leave your thoughts about the stats, back-story/description and picture as I know there's room for improvement! ALL Constructive Crit IS welcome and appreciated

Makeing the break action part was a pain in the ass! Since MS Paint or any of the other programs I have can't rotate other than 90* increments, I had to improvise. I made the 3 parts that you see (berrel piece, handle, cylinder), then printed them out and cut them out. I then posed them and scaned them into the comp. It cam in just alittle smaller so I had to resize slightly wich slightly distorted it So I had to touch it up alittle.
Still dosent look as good as I hoped it would (as good as the top two), but I'm happy with it.
IF YOU KNOW OF A BETTER WAY TO DO STUFF LIKE THIS PLEASSSE LET ME KNOW!! I just started doing this a few days ago so I'm still learning

Oh absolutely. I build my own AR15 variants and tinker with stuff like this in the real world, so being a "technical consultant" is kindof second nature to me.

You might want to up your # of .38 cartridges to 7 or 8 and rechamber for .357 magnum [S&W and Taurus both make "higher capacity" revolvers now in .357 mag at that]. That way you would get the 7 or 8 shots of .38 for a standard load, be capable of having the .357 mag higher pressure loads for things like armor piercing or long range shooting [light/fast bullet, high velocity, flatshooting = good accuracy past standard ranges...especially if you go with a subcaliber/high ballistic coefficient bullet in a sabot] and then of course the 20 gauge down the center. Btw, a LONG 20 could be a solution for your "breaching load". After all, it headspaces on the rim. Nobody said you can't fill half the barrel with cartridge to make up for the limitations of the smaller bore diameter over a 12 for breaching purposes.

crap, I missed the part about the cylinder upgrades. only issue with that is you would have to change out the clockwork in the pistol as well, as that times the cylinder as it rotates. you can't just slap in a cylinder with more holes in it, the mechanism has to be designed to rotate said cylinder the correct amount or it will jam up/ not work.
You might also add a selector or second trigger for firing the shotgun barrel.

Duly noted, I never really thought about that with this gun (oddly I was thinking about it for a Protecta/Striker like one). Any way my weapon drawings are for a video game concept I've been cooking up for along time now (and probably way over ambitious) and details like that are not really necessary although I totally get where your coming from (I go there too). Also I thought I did put a selector switch or button on but I guess I missed that, nice catch, I'll do that for the new version!

Thanks for faving and I appreciate your input.

Oh, and a Taurus Raging Bull series magnum grip will tame the recoil enough for the 20 gauge...if it weren't for the BATFE they'd have a 28 gauge revovler on the market already...unfortunately the nominal bore size is .55 caliber so it either classifies as a destructive device, or a short barreled shotgun / any other weapon, and is subject to NFA regulations and a 200 tax stamp...so no sales in the US

So that's why I haven't seen much about the Raging Judge lately... DAMN YOU AT-F your selves and your expanded acronym, you take away all the fun toys! I really don't get why having a shorter barrel is bad, it's less powerful (although still deadly), I suppose it has to do with concealability which is funny as most pistols and short barrel revolvers are VERY concealable. Oh well, I'm not really an expert on current US gun laws so I can't say much on the subject.

Actually no, this was a concept that I came up with long ago and I later saw in the Ballistic Weapons Mod for Unreal Tournament 2k4. I agree it is very similar to the LeMat though.

Have you heard of the Civil War era Pistol [link] called the LeMat Revolver that almost exactly like this? It fired 9shots, and had 16 gauge shotgun shell fired out beneath the main barrel. It looked different, but what a thing to have or see. The shotgun shell if anything is a good breaching round.

20 gage is a bit light in the pant for a breaching round (That's usually a 10-12 gage)

I thought of the LeMat too....Would have been a clever thing if self contained cartridges had come along then..

Conversion? On second thought, maybe not... all you'd get is a mini M-16/M-4 with the KAC Masterkey attached only like you said a Very weak if not non-effective weapon.

Kinda depends on what you wanna do. The LeMat was designed with Dragoons (Cavalry) in mind. For them it's a clever idea, 9 medium pistol rounds and one "can't miss" shot (16 gage is a pretty healthy round) I say in these modern times a LeMat style pistol would be ideal for a tunnel rat or other point blank range combatant. Although, I'd be tempted to chamber the pistol rounds in .45 ACP, as it's already a subsonic round and therefore quieter and less damaging to silencers. (and still a potent round unlike 9mm)

I don't think doors could be breached with anything that could be comfortably fired from even a large pistol. For the "break the door" style raids, go for either a dedicated room sweeper (that new full auto shotgun is impressive) or something like one of the short barreled Thompsons with a 12 gage underneath (maybe with it's own 4-6 round mini drum feed)

"Thompsons" Like the 'tommy gun' sort of weapon? The Pulse Rifles from the Movie Aliens were Thompson sub-machine guns with shotguns underneath, and of course they had a futuristic covering to 'blend in'.

Emerald-Wolf13 In reply to AlphaRaptor2k6 [2010-08-31 03:05:59 +0000 UTC]

Gotta love it when the movie companies do that. It seems to make futuristic weapons that seem more plausible. (Take Han Solo's blaster for example) Much better than the days of the the acrylic and aluminium wall hangers that looked like they'd probably impale you if you landed on it (i.e. the phaser rifle that appears in Star Trek TOS once)

Yeah...that's exactly what I was thinking....Would make a knarley forced entry weapon.

I recommend an older version of JASC Paint Shop Pro. Should be available as abandonware or download from a magazine's website somewhere around the net. Versions 4-8 are best.

Break action revolvers were all but forgotten because of large caliber bullets. But they can be loaded so much faster in skilled hands. I love the design, it does remind me also of a .500 Magnum, and Vash the Stamped's gun a little.

Emerald-Wolf13 In reply to RavingEagle [2010-08-27 03:41:36 +0000 UTC]

Not so much large caliber, it was rounds like the .38 Special and smokeless powder that killed off the top revolvers. Smith and Wesson had a few .45 caliber pistols in the 1880s and Uberti still makes...

I think that it could be possible to do a top break in some of the magnum calibers, but none of the old style lock systems are up to the job.

As far as faster loading, it's a toss up. Many of the top breaks were self ejecting which might give you a slight edge provided a compatible speed loader could be found.
