Description
Wolves aren't thought as lazy and weak scavengers despite beign incredibly skilled predatorsWolves aren't thought as dumb despite being very intelligent
Wolves aren't consider as shitty because a unrealistic disney movie said so
Howewer, it is the case for hyenas.
Not only wolves aren't even on the top 20 most misunderstood lifeforms, but hyenas are thought by the majority as an exclusively necrophagic carnivore who can't fight effectively, even when in groups. Many people also thinks they are dumb and bad because The Lion King said so. However, all of this have being proven to be false.
Unlike Hyenas, wolves are seen for what they are (and sometimes better): a skilled and intelligent predator. You can see many peeps saying how mystical and amazing wolves are... but how many people say the same about hyenas?? Hyenas are wiser have a stronger bite than wolves and can crush elephants and giraffes bones with their jaws. And, before you send me than I am only writting this because hyenas are some of my two favorites animals, just go on any sources, theres is a very few chanches you find one who mention the opposite.
All of this without mention that most people finds hyenas to be uglies but finds wolves to be beautifull...
BONUS: 21 life-forms more misunderstood than wolves (not in any order):
Sharks
Spiders
Bats
Rats
Snakes
Earthworms
Bacterias
Flies
Weeds
Cats
Hyenas
Hippos
Koalas
Sheeps
Pigs
Thistles
Frogs
Chickens
Octopuses
Squirrels
Dolphins
Pigeons
Vultures
(If you wonder why I find any of these to be misunderstood just ask me).

yes yes YES finally someone agree! I love wolves and foxes more than hyenas but I just wish people would stop sterotyping them over a disney movie.. (though I do love that movie :3)

Well to be fair, rats aren't the only rabies-infested (not saying all rats are) creatures out there. There's also raccoons and squirrels, although something about rats stands out more than the other two... maybe it's just that they've been stuck with this reputation far longer than the other two animals (although their germs actually come from fleas or other parasites that made homes in their fur, so it's really the parasite bugs to blame).

Its not just rabies, and yes it is the disease spreading invertebrates to blame, but rats are the carriers

Well yeah, since the parasites need something small and easy to hop onto, and what better victim for that then rats?

I'm only on this stamp because I was looking for King Hippo. Funny that, huh? That being the case however, I do like hyenas. They're pretty cool animals. Gotta keep in mind though, all canines are natural hunters. Even house dogs have hunter instincts in them.

Yes
But, hyenas aren't canines, they are hyenidea.
But what you say about dogs is true, and should be keep reminded when someone decide to buy a wolf.

You can't own a pet wolf though. I'm pretty sure there's laws against that kinda thing. The closet you can get is a husky.
... hm, no comments about King Hippo? XD

I know, but there are still people who buy wolves as pets, and they always end up as being killed or mauled if they lucky enough.
And no comment this character because I don't know who King Hippo is

I don't believe the Lion King played a huge role in Hyena demonetization , maybe it influences younger children's opinions but as they grow older they should be able to watch documentary about Hyena. But this where the real problem is, there are hardly ANY documentary's that portray Hyenas in a positive light. If you watch any African nature show it'll ALWAYS show a Hyena terrorizing a Lioness for her kill, never a Hyena hunting on their own accord. Even simple nature books tend to put outdated/wrong information about Hyenas, all my nature books show the Hyena savaging rather than hunting, some even say they're canines. (lol)
Also, while I agree the Hyena has a very bad rep, it's incorrect to say the Wolf is a widely loved animal either.
On the internet, maybe, not not off the net.
It''s true that the wolf has managed to go from HATED to LOVED/LIKED within the last decade(s), there are still entire COMMUNITIES of people worldwide who support the eradication and extinction of the Gray Wolf, while I'm yet to see anyone support Hyena extermination or most of the animals you listed (I've only ever seen sharks and snakes be so heavily hated and killed for no reason) . Some even supporting poaching, illegal poisoning and trapping methods of the Gray Wolf.

I know about these Wolf Hating groups. But its still not the majority who support wolf tortuting. I would say the majority have a neutral point of view on them. Howewer, for the animals I listed, its the MAJORITY who see them for what they aren't.

I think hyenas were made the villains of Lion King because lions and hyenas are mortal enemies in real life, but as much as I love that movie, people need to stop taking it so seriously. But yeah hyenas are misunderstood, if it wasn't for them (and the vultures) the plains of Africa would be littered with dead animals.
I also agree with the list, society seems to think that dog abuse is terrible but cat abuse is totally fine (particularly if the cat happens to be black). It also annoys me that these 'animal lovers' go out of their way to stop wolf hunting despite the fact that they are not endangered, but don't give a crap when it comes to shark finning or the mass dolphin slaughters in Japan.

I didn't though hyenas could have being villains because lions and hyenas are mortal enemies TBH... Thats make LOT of sense!!
It wasn't the reason why I had dolphins to the list, though. It was because dolphins are often thought as perfect little human savior angels who can't do anything evil especially not to humans and will beat sharks to save us, will in fact they aren't more angelic than any other animals. And I added cats because people often thinks they are dumb, selfish and only good to sleep all day long. But it has being proven that cats are intelligent. And, while I agree to say cats aren't attached to their owners as much as dogs, they still appreciate him/her/them. I mean, if they REALLY didn't gives a crap about their housemates, would they purposely walk near by them and purr when petting?? I don't think so.
I didn't knew that they were so many people who didn't gives a crap about the dolphins slaughtered... I though it was the opposite.

Bexster674 In reply to Kimorox [2014-10-31 00:01:24 +0000 UTC]
I see, well that's also the case. Dolphins are certainly not little angels, they often 'accidentally' kill porpoises for their own amusement. I agree about cats too, they can be very useful, particularly on farms to keep rat populations down, and of course they can also make loving house pets.
I was probably exaggerating a bit there are actually many who want to stop the dolphin killings. I'm talking about the Wolfaboos mainly, they seem to put wolves first before any other animal. There are so many stamps condemning wolf poaching but not so many for other animals. There are also the animal rights activists who spend more time and money terrorising HUMANE hunters, rather than actually helping animals that really are in peril which does include the dolphins.
