Description
Before you read this don't get me wrong. I love wolves. They're my second favorite animal. However I do not think they're some kind of god, nor do I think they are better then any other animal in the animal kingdom. Im tired of wolfaboos giving wolves and wolf fans a bad name. One of the arguments by wolfaboos I hate the most is that OMG WOLFES ARE LIKE, THE MOST MISUNDERSTOOD CREATURES EVA! Wrong! I can list a ton of animals more misunderstood then wolves. Here are some.*WARNING: I am not trained in the medical profession. All medical information provided is gathered out of research, and others input. Don't take any medical information over the internet as truth until you see a trained medical professional.*
*SECOND WARNING: Please learn how to humanely keep away or catch wild animals, never touch, or pick one up yourself.*
(Note: Personally I think it's quite idiotic that I have to point the above warnings out. It's called common sense.)
Actual endagered species: This is more directed at the people who only care for grey wolves. While I'm not stating that there aren't endangered or near endangered species of wolves out there, many wolfaboos tend to go on and on about their precious wolfs, and disregard the many other endangered species. Only caring enough to save one species is not helping the problem.
Mice and Rats: Stepped on, Trapped, or killed in some way because they are seen as disgusting, disease carrying pests.
Frogs, Snakes, and Lizards
Certain species of insects: For example how many times have you devoted your time to a praying mantis, a leaf bug, ants, bees, locusts, or even cockroaches? Have you ever stopped to think, hmm maybe they aren't as ugly or disgusting after all. Or maybe that they can be actually helpful
*One insect that is misunderstood is the Earwig. People thought it'd climb into your ear just because it's hind wings is shaped like a human ear. They can't even get to our brains because of our skulls
They'd rather live in rotten fruit*
Raccoons and Opossums
Skunks and Pigs: I put these two together because they are both misunderstood for the same reason. People think that all skunks and all pigs stink all the time. False! Pigs are actually very clean animals. And skunks only spray that strong stench when they are scared. Normally they do not stink.
Camels- One misconception about camels, is that they will spit at you any chance they get. Camels actually do not spit frequently. Camels live in qute a harsh environment, they can spit and they can live for long periods of time without water
Jellyfish. People think that jellyfish are constantly targetting us like terrorists. FACT IS, we keep going into THEIR territory.
Mink. I've heard "But we have to make them into fur coats, they're vicious!" And I've gotta say that carnivores are supposed to be vicious, it's part of the food chain.
Crows & Ravens. People think that they bring bad luck and are just plain evil (for being black). Fact is, crows are intelligent and they are scavengers, so they don't usually kill anything. They also eat beetles that destroy lawns in my area, quite helpful eh?
Kiwi bird. People think they're extinct, but they're not. And this kind of ignorance is preventing the Kiwi from getting off the endangered list.
Piranha. They attack people because they have their eggs in the areas where people decide to swim. They're just being over-protective of their small-fry.
Sharks. Many people still regard sharks as nothing but mindless eating machines that enjoy human flesh when in fact they'd prefer not to eat us as we're not fat-enriched enough compared to seals etc. and have proven to be most intelligent animals capable of learning.
Chimpanzees. People hate these creatures purely based on looks. Chimpanzees are in fact one of the most(if not the most) intelligent creatures in the animal kingdom.
Crocodiles- People think they are the devil of Africa.
Bats- With the take off of vampires as horror villains, most people see bats as nothing more than blood sucking villainess creatures, who are only out to harm you. In reality, bats are actually very shy creatures. They're more like bumble bees in the since of "if you don't bother them, they won't bother you". Contrary to popular belief, only a few bats actually suck blood, and even then, it's not from humans, but from animals. Also contrary to popular belief, very few bats actually carry rabies. Bats are very intelligent creatures and are also very important for our environment because they eat insects, and some even pollinate plants.
African Wild Dogs- They hunt by tearing their prey's stomach open and as terrible as it sounds, it actually provides a quicker death. Unfortunately people don't see this and think they vicious butchers.
Hyenas- Typically they're seen as dirty scavengers and thieves, when they actually do hunt for themselves.
Arachnids: Tarantulas for example, are believed to be so poisonous that they could kill you. Tarantula bites are actually no greater than that of a bee sting. For the most part, you can treat wounds at home. However, the one exception is that some are allergic to tarantula bites. In this case an immediate trip the hospital is necessary (note if you are bitten for the first time, and do not know if your allergic or not, visit the hospital, and look out for the symptoms.
(On another note, taratulas among other spiders are also great for pest control)
Porcupines: People believe they can shoot their quills. This of course isn't true. Say the prime example of a dog sniffing them, a porcupine can release them if that dog brings its snout a little too close.
Eels: People think they are just out to zap people (comment). In all actuality, eels are not usually aggressive. However, they are hard of seeing, which can explain a lot. (Valasco, T. 2003. "Electrophorus electicus" (On-line), Animal Diversity Web. Accessed July 19, 2013 at animaldiversity.ummz.umich.edu...

House cats: People think that cats are mean because they're not like dogs, but the fact is that the reason they seem "mean" is actually because they're just not pack animals. And that face that people think means "I hate you", where they lower their eyelids? That's actually their way of saying they are relaxed. Β And the reason they don't like belly rubs? Because they think you're trying to attack their internal organs!Β
I could go on forever about cats, but I'll stop there.
Bees: A lot of people assume bees are vicious because they sting, but they don't sting unless it's absolutely necessary because it can kill them (bumblebees, if I remember correctly, are an exception.) They're also a very key part of sustaining ecosystems.
Mosquitoes: A minor one- while it's true that they carry diseases, only the females drink blood.
Chickens: they're smarter than they look and they can actually make really good pets. Contrary to the myths about them being stupid, they exhibit traits of more intelligent creatures, such as worrying about the future.Β
Donkeys: People only think of them as ugly and smelly, but they can be very sweet and hard-working as well. Plus, those long ears are adorable! Β

Chimps I agree on,because they are seen as killing machines due to all these people taking them in as their "babies" when they are WILD animals for gods sake! Not some house cat or a guineapig! I personally love chimps, even though they can be a bit scary. But nonetheless they are very fascinating creatures and are extremely intelligent aswell

Bats ts and hyana's are one of my favorite animals! And in real life, the whole rivalry between hyana's and Lions is actully the other way around XD
A suggestion though. Maybe you could add polecats, magpies, vultures, Jackals, wolverines and Tasmanian Devills?

Electric eels aren't even true eels. They're a separate genus of fish.
I love bats. They're very amazing creatures. Most of the larger species feed on fruit and many flowering plants benefit from their pollination. As for the species that tend to eat insects...well, at least it keeps the insect population down.
The Lion King had it all wrong with hyenas. Lions actually steal from hyenas quite often. It's because lions are bigger and stronger.
Chimpanzees deserve our respect. They're the animals that are most like us, and they're very intelligent animals. I give Jane Goodall credit for giving us great knowledge about these animals.
As for camels...there's a reason why the Bedouins, the Tuareg, and other desert nomads depend on them. Horses cannot live in such harsh climates, but camels can. In some countries, like Saudi Arabia and Somalia, camel is part of the traditional cuisine. I actually like camels quite a bit.
I feel so bad for the sharks. They're hated merely for existing.

Gorillas certainly qualify. So do whales, cephalopods, Tasmanian devils, and anything that's prehistoric.
By contrast, there's animals that people think are lovable but actually can be quite dangerous, like hippos, kangaroos, dolphins, ostriches, etc.

DaBair In reply to frapt [2014-02-03 15:32:16 +0000 UTC]
Hippos are VERY dangerous animals. They're a lot faster than people think, and they're extremely aggressive. Hundreds of people in Africa are killed by hippos every year. Sometimes the attacks are unprovoked, which is the worst part. That's the reason why not many zoos have hippos.

Black cats - Would fit in with the crows and ravens. Not only thought to be bad luck, bit witches too. :I
Vultures - People think they're destructive and mean just because they happen to be somewhat... unattractive. Untrue. If it weren't for vultures, there would be corpses lying everywhere.
Cockroaches - Out of approximately 4,000 different species, only about 5 species are actually pests. Yes people assume "If it's a roach, it's a pest!" Yes, some carry diseases, but others actually make great pets. Like the Orange Spotted Roach and the Madagascar Hissing Cockroach. Even American cockroaches can easily adapt to being household pets.

Thank you for this list of misunderstood animals! I definitely agree with these; at least wolves have popularity on their side. Out of curiosity, what is your #1 animal? Mine is bats so I'm glad you added them to the list. And rats are my favorite pet, so I'm glad for that too. Though I do understand why wild ones have to be killed sometimes.
Do people really think kiwis are extinct...? As for insects, I used to like them a lot, but I ended up living in a house that was totally infested with mosquito larvae, leeches and especially ants. Now I don't like as many insects, although it's interesting to watch ants from a distance.

Dunno if it's worth it, but Red Wolves. (Hear me out! XD) I do believe they're on the more endangered side of the wolf population. Because their pelts can be so similar to a coyotes, sometimes inexperienced trappers and hunters might kill a red wolf thinking it's a coyote. However, there's a difference in their structure and facial features that hunters tend to miss.
Also, deer. Even though we see them as pests sometimes for eating gardens, they're pretty important too. XD (and tasty in my opinion)

Actully, a Red Wolf is a crossbreed between a Gray Wolf and a Cyote...I don't think hybrids Count as endangered species....

"The red wolf was designated an endangered species in 1967, and shortly thereafter the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service initiated efforts to conserve the species."
It's an endangered species. :3 There's even a sanctuary somewhere down south for them that's working on restoring their numbers!

megadracosaurus In reply to MattsyKun [2014-10-12 14:21:21 +0000 UTC]
Ah, I see! I wonder why though..Hybrids just don't seem like an endangered species to me. Cyotes and Gray Wolves both aren't endangered. So as long as those are there, the Red Wolf isn't actully facing excention.Β
Just to cleariy, this isn't a wolf hating comment. But I'm genuiley curious why the Red Wolf gets all the attention.
π: 0 β©: 1
MattsyKun In reply to megadracosaurus [2014-10-13 02:00:09 +0000 UTC]
Probably because while they have been determined to be sort of an intermediate between yotes and wolves, they are different enough to garner their own title as a separate subspecies. They're technically hybrids, but a 2012 study showed that they aren't really hybrids (at least, not anymore; they were most likely the result of a coyote/wolf ancestor way far back, but have evolved to become their own species) onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10β¦
You can't just make a wolf and a yote make babies and the puppies be red wolves. When they started the breeding program, they found that there were true red wolves, and then actual hybrids (which they removed from the program). So now we have some actual red wolves that are being re-introduced back into the wild.
And I know I like doing research on things. It's fun. X3

Well I never said there weren't endangered wolves out there. Only that some people go too far with the whole wolves are so misunderstood criteria. Often those people only care about wolves (targeted mostly toward grew wolves) and not the other creatures that happen to be in more danger or misunderstood. I just thought I'd point that out. I think it's quite sad that people can't tell the difference between a red wolf and a coyote.
Yes, yes they are. I have never eaten deer, so I'll take your word for it.
