Description
Before you read this don't get me wrong. I love wolves. They're my second favorite animal. However I do not think they're some kind of god, nor do I think they are better then any other animal in the animal kingdom. Im tired of wolfaboos giving wolves and wolf fans a bad name. One of the arguments by wolfaboos I hate the most is that OMG WOLFES ARE LIKE, THE MOST MISUNDERSTOOD CREATURES EVA! Wrong! I can list a ton of animals more misunderstood then wolves. Here are some.*WARNING: I am not trained in the medical profession. All medical information provided is gathered out of research, and others input. Don't take any medical information over the internet as truth until you see a trained medical professional.*
*SECOND WARNING: Please learn how to humanely keep away or catch wild animals, never touch, or pick one up yourself.*
(Note: Personally I think it's quite idiotic that I have to point the above warnings out. It's called common sense.)
Actual endagered species: This is more directed at the people who only care for grey wolves. While I'm not stating that there aren't endangered or near endangered species of wolves out there, many wolfaboos tend to go on and on about their precious wolfs, and disregard the many other endangered species. Only caring enough to save one species is not helping the problem.
Mice and Rats: Stepped on, Trapped, or killed in some way because they are seen as disgusting, disease carrying pests.
Frogs, Snakes, and Lizards
Certain species of insects: For example how many times have you devoted your time to a praying mantis, a leaf bug, ants, bees, locusts, or even cockroaches? Have you ever stopped to think, hmm maybe they aren't as ugly or disgusting after all. Or maybe that they can be actually helpful
*One insect that is misunderstood is the Earwig. People thought it'd climb into your ear just because it's hind wings is shaped like a human ear. They can't even get to our brains because of our skulls
They'd rather live in rotten fruit*
Raccoons and Opossums
Skunks and Pigs: I put these two together because they are both misunderstood for the same reason. People think that all skunks and all pigs stink all the time. False! Pigs are actually very clean animals. And skunks only spray that strong stench when they are scared. Normally they do not stink.
Camels- One misconception about camels, is that they will spit at you any chance they get. Camels actually do not spit frequently. Camels live in qute a harsh environment, they can spit and they can live for long periods of time without water
Jellyfish. People think that jellyfish are constantly targetting us like terrorists. FACT IS, we keep going into THEIR territory.
Mink. I've heard "But we have to make them into fur coats, they're vicious!" And I've gotta say that carnivores are supposed to be vicious, it's part of the food chain.
Crows & Ravens. People think that they bring bad luck and are just plain evil (for being black). Fact is, crows are intelligent and they are scavengers, so they don't usually kill anything. They also eat beetles that destroy lawns in my area, quite helpful eh?
Kiwi bird. People think they're extinct, but they're not. And this kind of ignorance is preventing the Kiwi from getting off the endangered list.
Piranha. They attack people because they have their eggs in the areas where people decide to swim. They're just being over-protective of their small-fry.
Sharks. Many people still regard sharks as nothing but mindless eating machines that enjoy human flesh when in fact they'd prefer not to eat us as we're not fat-enriched enough compared to seals etc. and have proven to be most intelligent animals capable of learning.
Chimpanzees. People hate these creatures purely based on looks. Chimpanzees are in fact one of the most(if not the most) intelligent creatures in the animal kingdom.
Crocodiles- People think they are the devil of Africa.
Bats- With the take off of vampires as horror villains, most people see bats as nothing more than blood sucking villainess creatures, who are only out to harm you. In reality, bats are actually very shy creatures. They're more like bumble bees in the since of "if you don't bother them, they won't bother you". Contrary to popular belief, only a few bats actually suck blood, and even then, it's not from humans, but from animals. Also contrary to popular belief, very few bats actually carry rabies. Bats are very intelligent creatures and are also very important for our environment because they eat insects, and some even pollinate plants.
African Wild Dogs- They hunt by tearing their prey's stomach open and as terrible as it sounds, it actually provides a quicker death. Unfortunately people don't see this and think they vicious butchers.
Hyenas- Typically they're seen as dirty scavengers and thieves, when they actually do hunt for themselves.
Arachnids: Tarantulas for example, are believed to be so poisonous that they could kill you. Tarantula bites are actually no greater than that of a bee sting. For the most part, you can treat wounds at home. However, the one exception is that some are allergic to tarantula bites. In this case an immediate trip the hospital is necessary (note if you are bitten for the first time, and do not know if your allergic or not, visit the hospital, and look out for the symptoms.
(On another note, taratulas among other spiders are also great for pest control)
Porcupines: People believe they can shoot their quills. This of course isn't true. Say the prime example of a dog sniffing them, a porcupine can release them if that dog brings its snout a little too close.
Eels: People think they are just out to zap people (comment). In all actuality, eels are not usually aggressive. However, they are hard of seeing, which can explain a lot. (Valasco, T. 2003. Surprised you didn't include sharks; much more has been revealed about them in recent times but many people still regard sharks as nothing but mindless eating machines that enjoy human flesh when in fact they'd prefer not to eat us as we're not fat-enriched enough compared to seals etc. and have proven to be most intelligent animals capable of learning.

here's a biggie:
HYENAS: people label them as "Slobbery, Mangy, Stupid Poachers" and filthy Scavengers, when in reality, most times lions are seen chasing hyenas from kills, it's the ones the hyenas made. They're about as intelligent as most old-world monkeys, and can chase prey for hours on end.

Yeah, I know most fans get that from the Lion King. People need to have common sense. What is seen in films, especially in cartoons, is not a good way to learn how animals act in real life. Not that I don't like Disney. I grew up with it.

I used to watch Animal Planet as well, though it was for me occupied throughout my late child, and especially teen years when I started quote "loosing interest"
unquote in the channels I used to watch as a child. Nickelodeon for example.
And yes, many people still unfortunately believe those certin films from their childhoods are natural portrayals animals.

I forgot to add this in my last message, but the Dingo has to go on that list of misunderstood animals. I know that it is a subspecies of the Gray Wolf (it's scientific name is Canis lupus dingo), but this Australian canid is very different than the other subspecies, and is extremely misunderstood. As such, it is still highly persecuted, even to the point that in some places it is considered non-native vermin rather than native wildlife that needs to be protected (the IUCN lists it as "vulnerable," which means that it has a high chance of going extinct).

Yes, it definately would be a shame if Dingoes went extinct. That would spell catastrophe for Australia's ecosystems. Not only do these "Australian Wolves" play a vital part in Australian ecology, but they also help control invasive species, particularily European Rabbits.

I must say that wolves are still highly misunderstood animals (evidence: [link] ), and that I absolutely love wolves, and think that they should still be protected. But I get what you're trying to say here. At least some people like them, unlike some other really cool animals which many people hate even more. Take rats and mice. These beautiful, diverse creatures grace just about every land ecosystem that's not a remote island, the arctic, or Antarctica. They come in so many shapes and sizes and colors. Many are highly adapted to their particular lifestyles, such as hopping, swimming, and climbing. There's even a genus of North American mice - Onychomys, the Grasshopper Mice - that are sorta like the wolves of the rodent world. They hunt down insects, and when calling they lift their heads like wolves. Mice and rats are key-stone species, and as such are vital to a healthy ecosystem. Yet despite all this, they are hated, killed, persecuted, and even tortured. I don't understand how people could hate these magnificent creatures. Many species are endangered, and it's sad to think that people are unwilling to help them just because they're rats or mice. These animals deserve better! Other misunderstood animals worth mentioning include sharks, ferrets (many people - coughcough California Dept. of Fish and Game coughcough - believe that these domestic creatures are vicious, dangerous wild animals, even though this is very untrue) and other weasels (Mustela species), hyenas, coyotes, and jackals.

For the record, I never said that they weren't misunderstood, I said that they were not the most misunderstood creatures in the world. And yes, it is very sad to see many endangered species uncared for because they do not look adorable or they are not furry or fluffy, or like you said are portrayed by others as vicious. All wild animals are dangerous if provoked, but they would not just attack someone for no reason.

Ok, I just wanted to make sure that you knew wolves were still misunderstood (I get pretty defensive with wolves). Yes, it is sad when people don't care about certain animals because they are not cute and popular. And I get so sick and tired of people hating certain animals because they are "dangerous." Like you said, wild animals only attack if provoked, but sadly people see this as aggression. I wish more people knew the truth, then maybe, just maybe, people would care more about the other animals.

Ehem. There're also... Bacteria. There're a lot of bad Bacterias, so apparently that makes all Bacteria bad.
Vultures. Apparently they're bald and ugly and eat dead things, so that makes them horrible. Actually, all meat eaters, including wolves, are technically eating something dead. And, Vultures are eating Carcasses of Animals that would make the world stink if they weren't eating them. (This is true with all scavengers and decomposers).
Crows. They symbolize death just because they're all black, fly, and don't sound pretty. But. They're one of the only 3 animals on Earth that can use Tools. There're us, Apes and Monkeys, and Crows. How is that NOT awesome?!

There is a lot of good bacteria. Many people don't realize that there is actually good bacteria living inside them right now.
Vultures being scavengers, have always sort of intrigued me. They are quite interesting creatures.
Personally I've always thought crows made beautiful sounds. Id rather hear a crow then a goose any day.

Mice and rats: are diseased carrying animals and whats better: Having your kids possibly eating and playing with rat crap or having them out of your family's personal space.
Snakes: sometimes kill for no reason... i guess thats why people hate them? Even if they are just protecting themselves would you go up to someone and bite them if they walked near you?
Insects: It's not that they are ugly as most may seem disgusting... It's because animals like those keep coming once they know theres food where they are going. Did you ever think of one walking all over your food?
Fish: I guess most fish are just known for killing, as they do, like any other animal. Sharks, jellies, parranahs and sting rays are all known for lots of deaths is all. That scares people.
Birds:- Since crows are black they are usually involved in halloween. Hence are apposed of being "evil" for some reason. Although some people don't like scavengers it is just a way for them to survive.
Raccons and oppossum: wouldn't you find it weird if an animal "dropped dead" in front of you? Or wouldn't you run if one had rabies? These animals are "hated" because both like many other animals are "dangerous and harmful".
Skunks and pigs: Skunks aren't always exactly hated either.Just another animal that may seem harmful? Stinch is one thing, hates another. So as i agreed on birds i believe skunks are misunderstood.

Jellyfish can't control where they go, the tides usually do. And tides usually go towards land.. Jellyfish don't even have brains, I don't think a brainless pile of mush would go and deliberately kill people. Not all mice are disease carrying, we have one in our garden that lives under some rocks, I doubt that it has disease, as for eating rat crap, well that's not the rats fault, how do they know that some dopey little kid is going to come and eat their crap? Snakes usually have warnings, some make their bodies into the shape of an S, some have a rattle, some hiss. If something very big that could crush you with it's weight came towards you I think you would bite it, actually you'd run away, but looking at snakes, they don't really make good runners .
Oooh, black, halloween, yeah they must be evil disgusting monsters. Common Ravens are infact the smartest of all bird species. Opossums pretend to be dead infront of you because they're afraid. What do you do if an animal dies infront of you? Walk past it and pretend it didn't happen. Insects barely walk on your food, even if they do, so what? Brush them off or get more food. Although if the animal has rabies then yes I understand why people fear them.
But yeah, misunderstood, these animals can be dangerous, but they are still misunderstood. They wont go out looking for humans to kill. How many animals have actually gone out to kill humans? None
