Anyone else ever thought that the chestbuster and the retractable tongue/secondary inner jaw of the adult xenomorph were actually the same thing? The vermiform chestbuster itself doesn't undergo metamorphosis, it just grows a complete body from its tail.
Possibly this could allow for an injured or trapped xenomorph to jettison its tongue, which would slither off and eventually regenerate a new body, something like immortal jellyfish .

Interesting, although personally I don't think so, the tongue looks quite different from Chestburster and if it simply build a completely new body around it wouldn't be so. Not to mention that the chestburster body shares much more characteristics with the adult Xeno than with it's "pharyngeal jaw" or whatever to call it...
It's an interesting idea though.

Did you know the scene was left intentionally unscripted and the actors (barring John Hurt, obviously) were not told about what was going to happen? The script only said "it emerges". Their screams were real.

It's interesting how darn sexual the first film was. I forgot who, but either Dan O'Bannon or Ridley Scott stated they wanted the movie to sexually assault the audience.

More than just that, actually. Β They wanted to take the fears associated with rape and the dangers of childbirth and apply them to men. Β That's why Kane (first guy to die) is attacked in the face by a monster that looks like a vagina in a hand with a penis coming out of it and then fatally gives birth to the larval stage of the xenomorph.
And then the way adult attacks: it has a disturbingly penis shaped head and inside its mouth is a second set of jaws that burst out like an erect dick and penetrate other people's heads.
That movie was all about rape, but it applies those fears to men, who are rarely targeted with those fears in movies. Β And it's very effective.
