Swamp Thing was born human, was a scientist who developed a formula to stimulate plant growth. He & his wife were working on perfecting it when thugs attacked. Knocked him out. When he awoke , he found they had murdered his wife and set a bomb under his workbench. As he made to disarm it, it detonated burning him to the bone and drenching his mutilated body with the bio-regenerated formula Cooked from head ti foot and in agony, he rushed burning into the swamp and a day later re-emerged as - SWAMP THING !
He now had great strength, and lightning fast regeneratibe power. If he lpst an arm, it;d grow back in minutes ! Bullets meant nothing to him. BUt he found it hard & painful to talk. THAT prevented him from being readily understood and was oft mistaken for a monster.
He first killed the thugs who killed his wife and turned him into a monster. From there he had many oft supernatural adventures. Berni Wrightson and others did his stpries. I have to go by memory, such as it is, to get the data above., as a burglar stole my comics...

I always considered Swamp Monsters, mud elementals.
Just not as big or strong as others.

Is mud an element though ?

I had a childhood book with a monster just like this, he wanted to play the trumpet but he couldn't because his own goo clogged the trumpetΒ Β

Nice. I've always been a fan of swamp monsters, many from comics including Swamp Thing, Man Thing, The Heap, The Glob, and of course D&D's shambling mound.
There is also the more recent Bog-Nar action figure

And there was also Bog Beast, a "misunderstood monster"hero of the Atlas Seaboard lineup.
Along with Protector, Tarantula, Brute, Cougar, Morlock 2000- none lasted more than 3-4 issues due to mismanagement of the company....
Bog Beast looked like a corpse in the last stages of decay,

Wow. Really thanks for that. "The Sun-Spawn Stalks" Very unique in the realm of comic swamp monsters and the noble heroic swamp monsters
The Brute seems pretty derivative. The Scorpion would become Dominic Fortune in Marvel I think. Am I right on that?

Correctamundo. Only he & perhaps one other survived.
The Brute killed innocent people and his series was cancelled in the middle of his fight with some Frankensteinish monster.

It was the first concept to come out these toy makers Warlords of War line. Just a fun idea. Some good art too.

In fact, I didn't play much D&D, but it's a well known game for most roleplayers. I used to prefer darker environments, like Call of Cthulhu, or Aquelarre.
