Description
Though the United Republic of Europe had formally been in a state of war with the Holy Britannian Empire since the latter’s invasion of Japan in 2010, the two superpowers would avoid direct military conflict for the next six years. Instead clashing in Europe's colonies and protectorates in Africa as well as through proxies in the minor powers and conquered nations. That all changed when on the 2nd of May 2016, Britannia launched its main offensive against the United Europa in North Africa, Iberia, and the Russian Far East. The EU had long since expected an invasion from the west, the Britannian invasion in Morocco ultimately failed to gain a beachhead, and while it took time to push the Britannian invasion force in Iberia back to the Lisbon Perimeter, Europe’s Atlantic wall had held firm. An invasion from the east however was nothing EU defense doctrine had ever expected, the vast tundra and expanse of Siberia was thought to be an impenetrable natural barrier, their complacency proved fatal as the Britannians rapidly advanced across the Russian Far East all the way to the Ural Mountains by the end of 2016. Along the way Britannian forces were provided aid and reinforced by the local population, who had long since despised the weak Democratic Government enforced on them by the French and sought the restoration of old Imperial Russia. It was in the Russian city of Yekaterinburg that the Grand Principality of Euro-Britannia was established by Imperial proclamation, Euro-Britannia was to encompass the whole of Europe’s continental territories, acting as the junior partner in Britannia’s global ambitions. In the Summer of 2017 Britannia renewed its offensive in Russia, while the EU had rushed to fortify the Eastern Front, the Britannian 6th and 7th Generation Knightmare frames proved far too formidable and broke through their defenses with ease. The collapse of the Ural Line forced a mass retreat by the European Army across western Russia with the terrain favoring the much more maneuverable Britannians. The Winter of 2017-2018 would see some of the most brutal fighting on the Eastern Front, the Euro-Britannian capture of Moscow and Saint Petersburg proved a massive blow to morale for the EU’s Russian State Army, the loss of Saint Petersburg in particular which over the last two centuries had been turned into a model city for the new Russia. Such was the symbolic importance of Saint Petersburg that the EU Northern Army group almost immediately launched a counter offensive to retake the city. The operation ended in near disaster for the Europeans, so much so that the Northern Army Group itself faced complete destruction in its retreat had it not been for the heroic rearguard action of the W-Zero Unit and it’s young commander, then Major Leila Malcal.Born Leila von Breisgau, Leila was the daughter of Britannian Aristocrats who had fled the Empire and took refuge in the United Europa. Her father Bradow von Breisgau quickly rose to a position of prominence in the EU, making partnerships with key figures in Europe’s military and economy before ultimately running for office with the ambitions of taking a seat on the EU’s United Council. Bradow’s rapid success, calls for reform swaying the European populous, and the fact that he was a Britannian earned him many enemies within the EU government. During a rally in Paris, Bradow was killed in a bombing initially believed to be perpetrated either by Britannian intelligence or one of his political rivals, in the aftermath the young Leila and her mother were quickly taken out of Paris though their motorcade was also hit by another bombing, killing her mother and leaving the then 6 year old Leila orphaned. She was taken in by the Malcals, a prominent family in France who wished to formalize their status by marrying their name to proper Nobility. While unbeknownst to anyone at the time, the assassination of Leila’s parents was in fact orchestrated by EU General Gene Smilas, one of the alies Bradow had made who sought to use the rising star’s death for his own ambitions. Smilas would take Leila under his wing as a sort of mentor, guiding her to pursue a career in the military and opening for her many doors for advancement. Through Leila's personal talent and General Smilas pushing her along, at 17 Leila would become the youngest Major in the EU military. Assigned to the W-Zero Unit on the Eastern Front, Leila quickly gained notoriety commanding Japanese exiles in several special missions hampering Britannia’s advance into Europe, most notably taking direct command in the field during the EU offensive to retake Minsk, leading her unit in a daring Spaceborne raid behind enemy lines. When the EU was thrown into crisis after the perceived destruction of the North Sea Energy Plant during the Ark Fleet Incident, it was Leila who managed to restore a semblance of civility through her broadcast and subsequent operation to destroy the Britannian airship Gallia Grande. Overnight Leila had become one of the most famous figures in Europe though not long after the public was devastated upon being informed by General Smilas that Leila had been killed in a Britannian raid on the W-Zero headquarters at Castle Weisswolf. Using both the public’s outrage and the weakened state of the government, Smilas swiftly took control of the EU as it’s sole executive authority, proclaiming himself Emperor and like the great Napoleon of old, vowing to crush Europe’s enemies and drive out Britannia. Concurrent to these events in the EU, Euro-Britannia was undergoing its own crisis, the Grandmaster of the Order of St. Michael, Shin Hyuga Shaing, had deposed the Britannian government in Saint Petersburg and seized complete control of Russia as his personal domain, imprisoning the Emperor’s envoy and executing the Grandmasters of the other Knightly Orders who opposed him. Leading the raid on Castle Weisswolf, Shin sought to capture the W-Zero Unit’s orbital launch site as a means of attacking Britannia directly. His death in the operation allowed for the Imperial loyalists to regain control of Euro-Britannia while at the same time General Smilas’s attempt to fully retake Iberia ended in his own death concluding the brief reign of Europe’s second would be Emperor.
2018 began with both the United Europa and Euro-Britannia recovering from the political turmoil at the end of the previous year. Believing he had failed the Emperor, Grand Duke Velaines abdicated in favor of the young Grandmaster of the Order of St. Raphael, Lord Andrea Farnese. Farnese had led the Britannian Loyalists through Shin’s Rebellion and upon being named as Euro-Britannia’s new Grand Duke, he immediately went about reorganizing the remnants of the other Knightly orders into his own personal retinue and quickly managed to restore stability in the conquered territories. Meanwhile, the civil unrest in Europe which began during the Ark Fleet incident had only intensified with the death of Smilas, many of the General’s followers still held key positions and were unwilling to restore civilian control of the military. It was also during this time that old rivalries between EU member states began to resurface as while France was on the verge of its own civil war, the German states had grown only more unified in their opposition to French leadership over the United Europa. Thus was the situation Britannia found Europe in when the Empire launched its third major offensive against the EU in June of 2018. Supreme command of the Britannian forces would be given to Schneizel el Britannia, the Second Prince and Imperial Prime Minister, once again the Britannians would attack from the west in three separate offensives, Operation Lionheart in North Africa, Operation Black Prince in Iberia, and Operation Agincourt attacking France itself. Key to the offensive’s success was the rebellion in the British Isles. For years Britannian intelligence had built up a network of saboteurs and informants in their ancient homeland. Not long after the beginning of Operations Lionheart and Black Prince, Britannian sympathizers launched a rebellion in the British isles, proclaiming a new government from the halls of Westminster while militias besieged EU garrisons in their barracks. One of the leaders of the so-called British Revolution was none other than the Prince of Wales, Arthur Walpole, a direct descendent of the new royal family installed by Napoleon to keep the isles loyal to France. With the establishment of the British Reconstruction Authority, the country officially declared independence from the United Europa while also granting Britannian forces free military access to their naval ports and air bases. From here the Britannian units that would spearhead Operation Agincourt moved from their bases in Iceland down to the British isles before then advancing across the channel to their landing zones in Aquitaine, Brittany, Calais, and Normandy. With the destruction of the EU Home Army at Toulouse, the Britannians rapidly advanced across France with little to no resistance, the last major holdout being Paris which was besieged on all sides by the Britannian forces. During this time the German states proclaimed independence from the EU, reforming under a new Federation and seizing the Rhineland before offering Britannia the terms of their own separate peace; shortly thereafter, the United Kingdom of Scandinavia also announced its secession from the United Europa.
The Treaty of Aachen signed not long after the fall of France was believed to have signaled the death of a United Europe under French leadership. It recognized Germany and Scandinavia’s autonomy as well as their withdrawal from the war against Britannia. What remained of the EU government and military high command fled to the old imperial city of Vienna. Meanwhile in Paris, Prince Schneizel held a grand triumph for the whole world to see, parading down the Champs-Élysées with scores of captured EU military equipment and troops alongside his own victorious forces. Believing the war in Europe effectively over, Schneizel saw fit to relieve himself of command as he returned to the Britannian homeland. To break the EU remnants will to fight on, the Britannian Royal Air Force embarked on nothing short of a campaign of terror, conducting daily bombings on the largest cities still nominally under the EU’s control. Then on the Eastern Front, Andrea launched a dual offensive pushing to recapture Minsk and the Baltic with the bulk of Euro-Britannian forces being focused on the latter objective as taking the Baltic would leave the EU Army on the Eastern Front vulnerable to encirclement. As the Britannian troops entered Riga, it truly appeared that these were the final days of the United Europa. The United Council was fully prepared to offer terms of surrender to Britainia, then in that darkest hour, a miracle happened. The believe dead “Second Coming of Jeanne d’Arc” Leila Malcal returned with the W-Zero Unit along with a corps of Britannian defectors and came to the defense of Riga, pushing the Britannians out of the city in a battle which had mirrored that of the failed EU attempt to retake Saint Petersburg, only here the Britannian forces would not be so lucky in their withdrawal from the Baltic. Leila’s corps aggressively pursued them, taking thousands more prisoners and capturing entire regiments' worth of Knightmare frames through raids on the retreating Britannians. At the Second Battle of Narva she faced the Order of St. Raphael under the direct command of Grand Duke Andrea, while at first it seemed that the Britannians would hold firm, Leila’s use of an orbital drop behind their lines forced Andrea to divide his forces, allowing Leila to cut off the weakened Knights and claim victory through defeat in detail. With the loss at Narva, Andrea had no choice but to order the Britannian withdraw from Saint Petersburg and the relocation of the capital to Moscow. The Liberation of St. Petersburg proved to be a much needed morale boost for the EU, even more so when the populace learned of the city’s liberator. With the Eastern Front restabilized, Leila was ordered to Vienna where she was to meet with the United Council. Though first, she along with her whole unit was forced to appear in front of a military tribunal to explain their apparent desertion, while some wished to make an example of her, most in the government and military were in agreement that Leila was far too popular to be punished, and with the EU facing total destruction at the hands of Britannia, the United Council voted unanimously to name her Captain-General of Europe, an office granting her supreme executive and military authority over all remaining territories of the EU.
Leila was initially hesitant to accept such a responsibility, refusing to to give her answer for several days, though she was finally persuaded by her companions to accept it, reminded that the whole purpose of her coming out of hiding was to restore peace to the continent, Leila vowed to surrender such power immediately upon the war’s end. In one of her first actions as Captain-General, Leila was forced to deal with an attempted Britannian invasion of the Italian peninsula, making use of new mass production drones and the EU’s advantage in Space Supremacy, the Europeans won yet another victory over Britannia as Leila’s popularity only grew amongst the public. Now taking aim at the air bases in North Africa being used to stage bombing raids on Europe. Leila conducted the largest Spaceborne Offensive yet seen, landing an invasion force in Egypt and driving the Britannians back East across North Africa. Dubbed Operation Crusader, the EU Counteroffensive was proving a major inconvenience for a Britannian leadership who largely believed the war in Europe won just months prior. Desperate to turn the tide back in their favor, Prince Schneizel ordered the Knight of Nine, Nonette Enneagram, to rally the Britannian forces in the Mediterranean and North Africa to meet the European army in one final decisive battle along the Nafusa Mountains outside of Tripoli. Here five days of hard fighting would end in victory for the Europeans, however in personal combat with the Knight of Nine herself, Leila's close companion Akito Hyuga was critically injured and comatose for some time thereafter. Both his and Nonette’s Knightmares were also destroyed in their duel. While EU forces continued their march east, Akito was flown back to Vienna where he would spend some time recovering from his injuries. By the time the Britannians had been pushed back to Morocco, Leila was approached by representatives of the Black Knights, fighting their own war against Britannia in Asia, their leader Zero made her an offer of Alliance against the Empire as well as requesting that the United Europa join his proposed United Federation of Nations. While Leila would agree to the Alliance, as only the EU’s temporary leader, she would affirm that she did not have the right to unilaterally declare Europa join such an organization, and that while she would enter into partnership with them, the decision to join would ultimately be decided by the people of Europe once Britannia was defeated. As the UFN began it’s offensive to retake Japan in Asia, at the same time EU forces began their own operation to liberate North Africa and Western Europe once and for all. When the flag of the United Europa flew over a recaptured Casablanca, Madrid, and Lyon on the 1st of August 2018, the geopolitical situation had shifted rapidly by events in Asia and the Britannian Homeland. Tokyo had been destroyed via detonation of the first FLEIJA bomb, Emepror Charles zi Britannia was dead, Second Prince Schneizel was made an outlawed in his own country, and the long lost Prince Lelouch vi Britannia now sat on the Imperial Throne.
Following the ascension of Emperor Lelouch, Britannia entered into ceasefire with the UFN and Europa. While Britannian troops still occupied most of France and Northern Spain, it was believed that with the Emperor’s intent of having Britannia join the UFN that the war was rapidly nearing its end, and that he would soon order the full withdrawal of the Britannian armed forces from Europe. That dream of peace however was shattered when Emperor Lelouch took most of the UFN leadership and representatives hostage in Japan before then ordering a renewed offensive on all fronts, this time with the Britannian soldiers possessing a notable zeal and ferocity for their new Emperor. As the UFN began its counterattack, Leila took personal command leading the final EU offensive to retake Paris, in spite of heavy European casualties, the Britannians were rapidly losing ground, Victory in Spain was declared on the 8th of August, and the EU drive to the Atlantic divided the Imperial forces in France. Paris was in sight when Leila received the terrible news from Japan, Lelouch had won, the UFN was defeated, and the Emperor was now in possession of the FLEIJA weapon. The Emperor’s response to Leila’s offensive would be brutal, several European cities including Lisbon, Madrid, Nantes, Bordeaux, Geneva, Rome, and Verona were all wiped off the map. The United Council voted to strip Leila of her authority as Captain-General and gave in to Lelouch’s demands for unconditional surrender. In only a matter of weeks, months worth of fighting had been completely undone, the United Europa was conquered, and Leila's spirit was broken. Once again she and her companions were forced into hiding, actively being hunted for the next two months by Imperial occupation troops. Leila had tried and ultimately failed to save Europa; she would have taken her own life in that time had it not been for her small band of followers comforting her and reassuring their commander that they would fight on even if it meant certain death. Before they could take action however, Emperor Lelouch was assassinated by a reemerged Zero, setting off a chain of events leading to the restoration of the UFN with withdrawal of Britannian forces from all overseas territories. The United Europa would rise once again though in a much reduced form and as a full member of the UFN. A disillusioned Leila however would not return to the public spotlight in spite of the pleas from various officials asking her to become Interim President for the foreseeable future. While Leila would encourage her companions to go and enjoy the freedom they had fought for, she herself would not remain in Europe, Instead returning to the Britannian homeland where she would reclaim her family’s title. Leaving the only home she had ever known to start a new life in one that her parents fled long ago, the only other person at her side being the man she loved.
Well, I hope you enjoyed that very abridged recap of Akito the Exiled and Extended Fanfiction I came up with for this map scenario. This is probably going to be my last major project of 2021 but that said thank you all very much for helping my page grow so fast this year, your feedback is always appreciated.
