It is the year 2199 Anno Domini. Nearly two centuries have passed since the nations of Earth began moving their burgeoning populations into gigantic orbiting space colonies and to the celestial bodies beyond. A new home for Mankind, where people are born, raised, and die.

On July 4, 1945, The Second World War came to a sudden and violent end with the atomic bombing of the United States Naval Base at Pearl Harbor. In its aftermath the American Public, weary after four bloody years of stagnant warfare in the Pacific, finally sued for peace with the victorious Axis powers of Japan and Germany. However, as the ashes of nuclear hellfire settled on Honolulu, a new chapter in Human history had begun, one in which the three world Superpowers would harness the Atom to its fullest potential in an arms race which would leave all of Mankind teetering on the brink of extinction for decades to come, thus began the Nuclear Age. Though triumphant in supplanting the old world order, and achieving their goal of expanding into large swaths of territory in Eastern Europe, the enormous cost of Germany’s post-war endeavors would see the Reich’s economy stagnant then face near total collapse as there were now no more hostile countries to loot and subsequently no war to fuel their industrial economy. The damming of the Mediterranean via the ambitious Atlantropa project would result in one of the worst ecological disasters in history as much of the Mediterranean basin became a near inhospitable wasteland, only worsening the already strained relations between the Reich and newly formed Italian Empire. The 1950s would prove a turbulent decade for the country as the nation was stricken with high unemployment and social unrest, ultimately climaxing with the attempted coup by the SS. While suppressed, the incident put the ever apparent tensions between the Reich’s high ranking officials on full display for the rest of the world and had many questioning what the future would bring following Hitler's death. Meanwhile across the Atlantic, the fortunes of the defeated United States of America and remnant allied powers began to turn with the Election of former U.S. Army General Dwight D. Eisenhower as President in 1952. His administration would see the reorganization of the allied powers into the Organization of Free Nations, or OFN for short, which would safeguard the last remaining liberal democracies of the world and openly challenge German and Japanese supremacy. Over the following decade, the United States would build up a massive stockpile of its own nuclear weapons, as well as provoking the Space Race by being the first country to put a man in orbit. In January of 1962, the Reich celebrated their perceived victory in that race when German astronauts touched down on the surface of the Moon. However this event would prove to be the last great achievement of Hitler’s Germany as the Reich would descend into civil war with his death the following year, and that American efforts in surpassing Germany in outer Space were far from over.

In 1968, former Marine Corps aviator and Governor of Ohio, John Herschel Glenn Jr. was elected the 40th President of the United States. The administration of his predecessor, Robert F. Kennedy was marred by a series of failed economic policies and mass civil unrest, Kennedy’s administration also oversaw a massive deployment of U.S. troops to South Africa in order to contain the spread of Fascism in the conflict which would come to be known as the South African War. Thus sparking a bloody five year conflict which would only further destabilize the nation. Upon taking office, Glenn purged the Executive branch of the crony politicians and bureaucrats brought in by previous administrations and instead appointed a cabinet made up entirely of expert Scientists, Mathematicians, and Engineers to aid him in his new administration. Working tirelessly to rebuild the American people’s trust in their government, in 1970 Glenn saw a major rise in popularity as the U.S. led intervention in South Africa ended in a decisive victory for the OFN. The tide began to turn when Reichskommissar Wolfgang Schenck overthrew the German satellite government in Southwest Africa and proclaimed the free Republic of Angola, as the Reichskommissariats of East Africa and the Congo were thrown into chaos and diverted troops to Southwest Africa, The OFN forces were given the time needed to plan and conduct a major offensive which ultimately succeeded in not just pushing the Reichs troops out of South Africa, but also the collapse of Germany’s satellite states in all of central Africa. It was a humiliating defeat for the Reich, but with the country still recovering from the short but devastating German Civil War, the new regime of Albert Speer proved unable to respond and only fueled efforts of individuals such as Helmut Schmidt and the Gang of Four in their goal to curb Speer’s power and bring about their own desired reforms for the Reich. Though OFN troops would remain in Africa for some time, the victory gave Glenn the political and popular backing needed to launch what would prove to be America’s most ambitious Space initiative to that point, Project Ares, the mission to put a man on the surface of Mars. After an astonishing five years of technological breakthroughs, setbacks, and political maneuvering. It was on July 4, 1975, that same date on which the country was born and suffered its most catastrophic defeat, that American Astronauts Neil Armstrong, Jim Lovell, and Sally Ride became the first human beings to set foot on the surface of another planet and also set in motion yet another chapter in the long history of Mankind, often referred to as the Universal Century.

However in light of the work which needed to be done, Schmidt’s government would put a low priority on any future German missions into Space. Consequently the Empire of Japan would emerge as America’s primary competitor in the Space Race. With the Japanese Co-Prosperity Sphere barely surviving the unrest of the 1960s and the nightmare that was the Great Asian War, Japan was forced to undergo a rapid process of liberalization as well as grant greater autonomy to the Co-Prosperity Sphere’s member states in order to hold it’s Empire together. In the peace that would bring a final end to the conflict, the Japanese would agree to share power with the new Chinese Government in Nanjing, effectively turning the Co-Prosperity Sphere into a joint Sino-Japanese union over East Asia. Meanwhile it was also during this time that Japan was forced to withdraw from its treaty ports in San Francisco and Los Angeles as the United States threatened a war on two fronts should their demands not be met. It wouldn’t be until the early 1980s that the political situation in Japan finally stabilize, with the abdication of Emperor Hirohito and the ascension of his popular son Akihito, the country would enter a new golden age of economic growth and technological advancement, proving itself a worthy challenger to American Space supremacy by sending a probe into the atmosphere of Venus and establishing a permanent presence in the skies of Earth’s sister planet.

As the nations which made up the OFN gradually became more integrated with one another over the later 20th and early 21st centuries, along with the ever growing cost of competing with the entirety of the Co-Prosperity Sphere in the effort of maintaining a strong American presence in Space, the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand all agreed to cede their national sovereignty over to a unified government based out of the OFN headquarters in New York, thus the United Federation of Nations was born on October 24, 2012. Over the next several decades, the UFN undertook a series of massive megaprojects which would dwarf those of the post-war German Reich. The first being the construction of several dedicated Spaceports and Mass Drivers across the North and South American continents, next was the building of multiple O’Neil type Space Colonies at various Lagrange points within the amply named ‘Earth Sphere.’ The climax of these projects came in 2077, with the completion of the Lake Victoria Space Elevator designed by the then 26 year old Aeolia Schnenberg. Though both Japan and Germany would have successes of their own in the colonization of the Earth Sphere, it was clear that the Federation stood alone as its first, and sole Superpower. Concurrent to these events, in 2052 a child was born who would challenge the very notion of what it meant to be Human in this brave new world, George Glenn was the great grandson of President John Glenn and from a young age proved himself a prodigy like no other. At 25 he was a world renowned athlete, mechanical engineer, decorated Air Force pilot, and in training for the first manned mission to Jupiter in a 13 year round trip. As Glenn and his fellow astronauts prepared to set out aboard their ship from the Federation’s orbital Laplace Station, Glenn gave a speech in which he revealed to the people of Earth to truth behind his remarkable achievements, that he was not in fact born naturally into this world, that his genetic make up had been modified to make him both mentally and physically superior to other Humans, and that as he spoke the information on the project which created him, along with the information on the means to unlock the secrets to the Human Genome was made readily available to the public. When Glenn returned to Earth in 2092, he returned to a world forever changed by his words spoken 13 years prior.

Not long after Glenn’s broadcast, over a million expecting young couples signed off on having their children genetically modified within the first 24 hours. Debates raged in every nation over the ethics and morality of tampering with the Human Genome but nevertheless, within that first year an entire generation of children were born who’s bodies and minds were vastly superior to that of their natural born peers, before long this generation of a new type of human being, or more commonly known as ‘Newtypes.’ Would come to be feared by much of the public and give rise to a number of Anti-Newtype advocacy movements which would spring up around the world, often with their respective followers resorting to violent acts against prominent figures in support of Newtypes as well as even targeting the children themselves. The most infamous example being in India when a school bus full of Newtype children was attacked by an angry mob who proceeded to rip the children out of the vehicle and club almost all of them to death, regarding them as nothing but sub-human abominations. Glenn was horrified by the chaos he had unleashed on the world and almost immediately started an organization of his own to protect these children and convince the public that they were not in fact monsters. However, while Glenn embarked on his mission to teach humanity the meaning of Newtypes, he discovered something which truly shocked him. Glenn and his fellow researchers found that a large number of the children had developed a form of precognition and mental capability for understanding one another which went far beyond scientific understanding and of which there was simply no explanation for. Believing he had discovered evidence of the divine lying within all of Humanity, Glenn intended to take his findings to the UFN General Assembly in New York, but not long after arriving in the city he was shot dead by an assassin. In the aftermath of Glenn’s death, discrimination and violence against Newtypes would only escalate to the point where most were forced off the Earth entirely and resettled in the colonies. Here, the Newtypes and their descendants would interbreed with the growing Spaceborne population in the colonies but would have their personal freedoms limited, and barred from holding most high offices within the colonial administrations. On January 1, 2110, the then President of the UFN, Richard Marcenas was giving a speech at the Laplace Station when he along with everyone on board were killed in an explosion perpetrated by Newtype terrorists who sought retribution against the government which had abandoned them in Space after ignoring their many pleas. In response to the attack, the Federation would tighten its hold over the colonies and become much more authoritarian in its efforts at beating the Newtype population into submission.

With Germany and Japan enacting similar policies in their own colonies, the Spaceborne population was trapped under the heel of oppression by the Earth until the rise of a new figure who would lead them. Dietrich Zollen, was not a Newtype, he was born in Germany and his family immigrated to the Lagrange 2 Space Colonies at a young age. Zollen’ s family was one of many German families who had grown dissolution with their country’s failed attempts at trying to emulate the Federation as the once mighty Germany saw itself slip further into decline and irrelevance. Dietrich was an intellectual and took great interest in politics from a young age, especially as he would bear witness to the discrimination of Newtypes and the Spaceborn population firsthand. While in school he would befriended the son of a powerful Spaceborn official, one Devin Sigismund Zaby, in time, with Dietrich’s charisma and towering intellect combined with Devin’s political connections and familial wealth, the two began a movement which came to threaten all three powers’ hold over their colonies. With the threat of a colonial revolt on the horizon, and with their regular military forces proving to be grossly inadequate to handle such a situation, the UFN turned to its de facto professional fighting force. The Zodiac Security Company was founded early in the UFN’s efforts at Space Colonization, also known as ZoCom, they were initially tasked with maintaining peace in the Federation colonies as well as safeguarding them from any possible German or Japanese incursion. Though over the course of the 22nd century, ZoCom was expanding to take on more roles which otherwise would have been filled by the Federation’s conventional forces. As of 2199, ZoCom stands as the largest military force in the Earth Sphere led by its young enigmatic commander, Troy Kushrenda. In 2188 Dietrich Zollen and his Green Shirt paramilitaries staged a coup against the Federation’s Lunar administration and proclaimed the establishment of the Consular Republic of Luna. Expecting support from Devin and his power base at Lagrange 2, Zollen found himself betrayed by the Zabys as his hastily assembled militia came under a relentless assault by ZoCom and their powerful new weapon, the Mobile Suit. With Dietrich Zollen ultimately taking his own life, and with his two young children Carloman and Anneliese missing and presumed dead, Devin and the Zaby family assumed sole leadership of the Spaceborne independence movement. After negotiating with the Federation and invoking the memory of the now martyred Dietrich, the cluster of colonies around Lagrange 2 was declared the Autonomous Nation of Zollen, with Devin Zaby acting as it’s Sovereign-Protector.

11 years after the ill fated Lunar Rebellion, the Earth Sphere finds itself in the midst of a new cold war at the dawning of the 23rd Century. In the decade since its founding, Zollen has risen as the fourth power in the Earth Sphere and continues to build up its military capabilities in preparation for a full scale war against the Federation in order to gain total independence and prove the inherent superiority of Spacebornes and Newtypes over the corrupt Earthborne led Federation who have oppressed them for nearly 100 years. Meanwhile, rumors continue to circulate amongst those who oppose Zaby rule that the children of Dietrich Zollen live and will someday return to avenge their father. On the Earth, Zollen’s Strategic Service agency arms and supports dissident movements in an effort to destabilize the geopolitical situation on the planet, forcing the Federation to spread their manpower and resources thin. In the summer of 2198, a Zollen backed uprising in South America was decisively defeated by ZoCom forces led by Kushrenada and the mysterious masked Mobile Suit ace Char Aznable. Months later in a remote village in eastern Anatolia, a band of Kurdish fighters once again fought for their people’s independence, they were easily cut down by the professional Turkish Army and their Federation built Mobile Suits. Most of the rebels in contrast are poorly armed and inexperienced, many are even children, one of these boys finds himself separated from his comrades and is down to his last rounds of ammunition. Behind him he hears the sound of the approaching Mobile Suit grow closer to his position, the boy rushes out to engage the enemy head on, determined to die honorably than as a coward. As he raises his rifle, the Mobile Suit standing in front of him is hit by a beam of light and explodes, before long the other Turkish suits are destroyed as well. Turning his head and dropping his weapon, the boy stood in shock of what he saw looking down at him, a strange silver Mobile Suit with a distinct V-fin just above the main camera on its head.

With the threat of a colonial revolt on the horizon, and with their regular military forces proving to be grossly inadequate to handle such a situation, the UFN turned to its de facto professional fighting force. The Zodiac Security Company was founded early in the UFN’s efforts at Space Colonization, also known as ZoCom, they were initially tasked with maintaining peace in the Federation colonies as well as safeguarding them from any possible German or Japanese incursion. Though over the course of the 22nd century, ZoCom was expanding to take on more roles which otherwise would have been filled by the Federation’s conventional forces. As of 2199, ZoCom stands as the largest military force in the Earth Sphere led by its young enigmatic commander, Troy Kushrenda. In 2188 Dietrich Zollen and his Green Shirt paramilitaries staged a coup against the Federation’s Lunar administration and proclaimed the establishment of the Consular Republic of Luna. Expecting support from Devin and his power base at Lagrange 2, Zollen found himself betrayed by the Zabys as his hastily assembled militia came under a relentless assault by ZoCom and their powerful new weapon, the Mobile Suit. With Dietrich Zollen ultimately taking his own life, and with his two young children Carloman and Anneliese missing and presumed dead, Devin and the Zaby family assumed sole leadership of the Spaceborne independence movement. After negotiating with the Federation and invoking the memory of the now martyred Dietrich, the cluster of colonies around Lagrange 2 was declared the Autonomous Nation of Zollen, with Devin Zaby acting as it’s Sovereign-Protector.

11 years after the ill fated Lunar Rebellion, the Earth Sphere finds itself in the midst of a new cold war at the dawning of the 23rd Century. In the decade since its founding, Zollen has risen as the fourth power in the Earth Sphere and continues to build up its military capabilities in preparation for a full scale war against the Federation in order to gain total independence and prove the inherent superiority of Spacebornes and Newtypes over the corrupt Earthborne led Federation who have oppressed them for nearly 100 years. Meanwhile, rumors continue to circulate amongst those who oppose Zaby rule that the children of Dietrich Zollen live and will someday return to avenge their father. On the Earth, Zollen’s Strategic Service agency arms and supports dissident movements in an effort to destabilize the geopolitical situation on the planet, forcing the Federation to spread their manpower and resources thin. In the summer of 2198, a Zollen backed uprising in South America was decisively defeated by ZoCom forces led by Kushrenada and the mysterious masked Mobile Suit ace Char Aznable. Months later in a remote village in eastern Anatolia, a band of Kurdish fighters once again fought for their people’s independence, they were easily cut down by the professional Turkish Army and their Federation built Mobile Suits. Most of the rebels in contrast are poorly armed and inexperienced, many are even children, one of these boys finds himself separated from his comrades and is down to his last rounds of ammunition. Behind him he hears the sound of the approaching Mobile Suit grow closer to his position, the boy rushes out to engage the enemy head on, determined to die honorably than as a coward. As he raises his rifle, the Mobile Suit standing in front of him is hit by a beam of light and explodes, before long the other Turkish suits are destroyed as well. Turning his head and dropping his weapon, the boy stood in shock of what he saw looking down at him, a strange silver Mobile Suit with a distinct V-fin just above the main camera on its head.
