I really like this one, you have a superb quality to your leather-working and top-stitching

I think that was the very first piece I ever submitted to dA and it's one of my most favorites. I spent many years perfecting my topstitching and that's a good thing because I use it a lot in what I do, so thanks for the compliment.

I envy it, I'm still working on my top stitching in my costumes, and it's getting better but takes a lot of patience. Straight lines are one thing, but precision curves like those are a real work of art in my book

Off the top of my head, I think what I do is set my stitch length, then figure that the topstitching will be about 1mm from the edge and just stay insanely focused on the space between the edge and the needle. After awhile it just becomes second nature.

yea, my main problem is just that I tend to rush things and then mess up. It also doesn't help that I have a pretty old relic of a sewing machine and it likes to goof up on me as I go frequently...

Do you get it checked now and then? All mine work fine as long as I keep them clean and oiled. Maybe have yours checked to see if the calibration is off?

possibly. I haven't had anything done for it since I bought it a couple of years back

If you use it regularly, it should be cleaned of lint, dust, and loose threads, especially in the bobbin case. I use Q-tips and rubbing alcohol to clean all moving parts (there are lots of them!) and then use a machine oil made for sewing machines and there are lots of places on a machine that need oil. Then stitch several rows with white or light-colored thread on a clean rag until the thread looks clean and has no more oil on it. If you clean and oil it regularly, you probably won't have to take it in unless the calibration needs tweaking or if you break something.

I need to do that more often. All I've been doing is blowing the lint and dust out once in a while. I'll get some of that oil and give it a fix up. Thanks for the advice!

Make sure it's first clean and dry in the places where you'll put the oil. And, make sure it's sewing machine oil (you can get it at a sewing machine outlet or a fabric store)... other oil like household oil isn't supposed to be good for the machine. Once you get it cleaned and oiled, you will be amazed at how smooth and sweet your machine will run.

I'm flattered that you think so, thankyou the design totally evolved from acquiring one stunning piece of jade and that its color went so well with the burnt orange leather, I've always thought that color combo was particularly pleasing.

thankyou, that was very nice of you to say I think the most enjoyable part of making something is not the actual execution of the design, but the plotting out of the design in my mind and on paper and then shopping for the materials. There's something magical about finding a treasure that you know is perfect for what you need

Your welcome!
You are right about that.
When I started with a doll I do exactly the same;
plotting out in my mind, make patterns, buy materials and textiles. That is one of the best parts of the arise of my dolls.
Succes with your art work, its realy fantastic. and bye!
Sheila.

I guess my favorite with the unicorn design, i've never had the opportunity to see such beautiful artwork on leather.
Actually i've been in morocco a couple of time and leather work is really important there, i'll be considering it more carefully next time!

I envy your being able to go to Morocco. I once bought a handbag made in Morocco but I had to put it away because it was beginning to fall apart. It's the only one I ever bought that I retired instead of using it until it had to be thrown away.

well, my mother is from Morocco, but i haven't been there in a long while!
leather is the major crafts there so i guess it would be dream land for someone as passionate as you.
anyway, your skills are truly amazing! keep it up!
