Description 100% leather except for the face which is ultrasuede. The face is from Munch's 1895 lithograph and as exact as I could get it, and the sky loosely based on his colors and shapes. Why the heart? Two years ago I rendered into leather the face with the hands onto a large black leather heart that closed with double doors on leather hinges and with buckles and leather straps. The local HeadStart program has an annual auction every Valentine's day with hearts as its theme and I donated that first heart. I regretted not including the sky, but I regret even more not doing the hands alongside the face in this second version. It's just that this time I wanted to scale down the size and keep it down to 7 3/4" long and 7 1/4" at its widest.

30+ hours, mostly inlaywork. I'll use this either in a larger project or leave it as it is and attach eyelets and a chain and donate it to next year's Valentine's Day auction. Maybe one of these years HeadStart will finally have the funds to buy a permanent home. In the meantime it is my entry to `KevLewis 's February Grand Prize Give Away Contest [link] .

Misereeeee because IMO the root of depression, angst, and agony is the absence of love, particularly self-love. And because the helium balloon character (from Strindberg and Helium[link] ) says "Misereeeee" in response to Strindberg when he says, "listen to their happiness, it brings me misery."

Haha, I enjoyed this a lot. The title is very witty.
I think you captured the face of "The Scream" well!

Thanks, I'm glad you think so. I had a hard time thinking of a title and I got this title from one of the episodes on strindbergandhelium.com . There are only 4 episodes, so if you've never seen them, you might like them 'cause they're really cute.

I just had an art project about Munch (as I'm Norwegian)
you did a great job on the face and making the "waves"

Thanks! This is the second time I've done this project so I'm quite familiar by now with the face. It was fun looking through my leather inventory to see how closely I could match the colors in the sky. Not an exact match, but close enough for me.

Tine, I am in awe of your ability to capture the essence of a masterpiece in such a difficult medium. After seeing this, I'm heartbroken not to have seen the original you made for the auction. I'm sure it was a hell of a piece, just like this one. The best part, of course, is that elaborate, gorgeously layered background. Great work, as always.

Thanks! I still kick myself for not getting a photo of the first one, but at least it went to a good cause. . *Jagarnot also donated a piece to the auction; I should see if I can find a link.

Ice Weasels of Love is what *Jagarnot donated to the HeadStart auction. Would have given the link sooner but she had to scan the photo because the photo was washed out and she didn't have the original anymore, and is also why the heart looks a little wonky because it was too big for the scanner so she had to redraw it.

The heart was originally a leather border, wasn't it? Must have looked great!

I made the mat in leather, yes, and I bound the inside of the heart to keep the edge tidy, but not the outside edge because that was hidden underneath the frame.

I love all the inlay. Do you use a special machine to sticth the edges? They are always so tidy.

hey, do you have a good, economical source for ultrasuede? I have to order it from a fabric store in several yard pieces or find small 8" squares at specialty shops. I'd like sizes in between and a variety of color choices without paying a fortune.

no special machine or presser foot, just years and years of practice. The main thing about doing inlaywork is that it requires a good eye because the technique is all edgestitching. I've seen closeups of a lot of leather inlay and you'd be surprised at how often even the pros are 'off' with their edgestitching. I know of a couple sources for ultrasuede but you can order as little as 1/8 of a yard from Field's Fabrics [link] which is great if you need only a few inches of several different colors, really affordable! Their fractions chart is here: [link]

Thankyou. It's odd, I know, and I did feel that doing it was a bit sacrilegious, but if an original is in the public domain, I'll probably do it in leather if it catches my fancy just so I can get it out of my system.
