Description It's probably important that you read this tutorial before this one. I decided to do this follow up tutorial after people asked me some questions. A few things to note:

a.) there are a lot of alternative methods. I don't claim this is the best method, either. It's just what I, personaly, do.

b.) please don't ask me how to do this in a different program. This is designed for PSP because thats what I use. If you use PS you're on your own. I'm pretty sure they have similar options with perhaps slightly different names.

do you think it also works with Photoshop 7.0??

Yes, It does I think that the "merge" mode is called "blend" mode in PS. I think thats the only difference

hmm i like the idea with texture a lot but im not very good with photoshop so can you help me ..why are all the textures so small or how can i make them big enough for whatever size picture ;/

Hmm you can either go around and try to find larger textures, or you could take a smaller one and just pattern it (so keep pasting the same piece over and over again until it fills the space you want) or you could try resizing the pattern to the size you need before applying it. If you decide to resize, I would suggest using some sharpening filters on it or else it will look blurry!

I hope that helps!

Well, if it's scanned small then its just small... so maybe they figure it makes no difference if you or they resize it, and they probably just post it as they have it figuring that you'll alter it as you need to?

The equvalent of gamma correction on PS is called "Color Balance". You can slide bars simultaneously in RGB and CMYK color scales, which is neat. To slide things around in HSB scale, there's "Hue/Saturation". Both are under "Image" -> "Adjustments"

Just in case people bug you about how to do this in PS despite your warning ^^

These are both great tutorials. Ever since I read them, I look for textures everywhere now. Constantly thinking of what I could scan for texture. Because it's so fun.

Thanks, but I'm not going to help people sort out their PS problems ><; it's sort of a pet peeve of mine. People stick to tutorials way too harshly. Following it word for word and not experimenting isn't as helpful and going out there and doing your own thing!

I need to scan more textures... I scanned like 100 of them and them my scanner crashed and I lost them all (for some unknown reason wtf?) so it put me off scanning textures for a bit :\

maria-jaujou In reply to kitton [2007-03-08 20:56:58 +0000 UTC]

lol, well sometimes it helps to follow it verbatum the first time, so that you get the basics, and then turn to experimentation. i know that the first time i tried Painter, i couldnt figure out for the life of me how to use it! and i had to find a tutorial on painting in painter and follow it word for word at first. ^__^

still, i love it when i come across a tutorial and say to myself "oh! setting it on overlay and taking down the opacity! i never though of doing that before. let's go play with layer styles now!". it's just lovely when you get a new idea from a tutorial ^__^

awww, that's horrible! losing work because of technical glitches is one of the most frustrating things about digital art. of course, first prize goes to your porgram crashing while you're saving your picture, but losing work in general is just very very unpleasant. you dont only lose the work you did, but also the desire to redo it. >_<

Its like that for anything... even video games. I just hate having to redo anything I've already done. You totally lose all interest and drive and motivation It's sad!

*nod nod* it's very sad. i cant think of how many cg's i've given up on because of computer crashes... just the thought of "having to do that _again_!" is enough to discourage even from the best lineart. horrible, really.

One of the reasons I think I prefer mixed media.. though I guess if you screw up with traditional that also means that you CAN'T undo. heh But that makes me like it more!

maria-jaujou In reply to kitton [2007-03-08 23:10:54 +0000 UTC]

I actually like unforgiving (like, ones where you can undo or cover up your mistakes) media better than forgiving. So, say, transparent watercolor more than opaque acrylics, and ink more than erasable pencil. Because you kind of have to get it right the first time you try, and so i wind up more focused on what i'm doing because the pressure is higher... and i wind up doing a better job because of it.

Again, thank you so much for sharing your knowledge. It is rare to find good tutorials, like the ones you've wrote, for PSP.

Wow, I'm really happy to see other people use PSP... I still use version 5 myself, and I just love it.

So yeah, it's nice to see something done in PSP as opposed to the bajillion tutorials for PS.

You use PSP? i always thought you used PS. You should make a coloring tutorial for PSP, i've never seen one.

Thats cause its really the same as PS. Honestly. The programs have very few differences.....

capa4mer In reply to kitton [2007-01-13 21:37:46 +0000 UTC]

yes, but i just usually find PSP easier to use.

I'M NOT ALOOOOOOOOOOONE!

XD

I got "stuck" on PSP because it loads faster and allowed me to multi task easier... PS has a lot of functions and power but PSP's always been good to me.

<_<

Now I just need to upgrade to a version from this decade...

I just love that you use PSP. That was my very first painting program and I still use it for a lot of manipulations instead of PS because it's so much simpler (plus nostalgic) :3
