Description
I was inspierd to draw circus sideshow freaks when I saw The Bearded Lady of The Bus again. So, here you are Ladies and Gentlemen, " The Biddenden Maids"!
(The twins are very loosely based on Mary and Elizabeth Chulkhurst.)
"The Biddenden Maids, Mary and Elizabeth Chulkhurst, were probably the best-known conjoined twins before Chang and Eng. The girls were born in 1100 to a wealthy family in the village of Biddenden, Kent, England. They were joined at the hip and were likely pygopagus twins. When the girls died in 1134, they left their entire fortune to the church. When one sister died, the other refused to be separated (probably a wise decision, given the medical technology of the 12th century) and died six hours later."

It's sad to read about people like these two who had to live in the early tech. times. Most S.T. died like these girls did hours apart and I some times wonder if it was heath reson or emotional...
I like how you did this poster..

I think that it's partly physical, as in most cases the twins share organs and blood, but there has to be an emotional side to it too, seeing as these people have spent their lives closer to eachother than "normal" people.
What I find odd is the constant assurance that the freaks all lived a really happy and content life, like they didn't have to face all the sorrows and hardships of everyday life that others have to cope with all the time. Altho, this could just be a publicity thing, as most of the freaks (nearly all of them at Barnum) were either sold to the circus or kidnapped there and very few of them actually chose that life themselves. Also the perfoming freaks were used to the point that their whole life was just a great big show. On the positive side, they did have a steady income of sorts and a more or less stable living situation, which was more then some ordinary folks had at that time.

I've a friend ( ) who used to draw a comic named "Freak Show". Everytime I take a look at that I can't stop laughing like a maniac. This reminds me of his comics. Good job. The only thing that doesn't "close" to me is the flat orange background. But I like it nonetheless.

I wasn't so sure about the orange background either, but it has kinda grown on me now. Originally I chose it because the old turn of the century freak show posters had similar backgrounds.

Yep, when I studied advertising (don't ask) they used to tell me that green is the ideal color for capting the interest of the audience...
Why? If orange is so much better than it...
The art of 19th century posters and such things is indeed fascinating. I have a fetish compulsion towards the announces of that time, specially regarding medicines. Trust me, you didn't want to get sick in that time ...

I adore the way their braids are braided together.... Makes me happy. You should make it a serious. I want to see the web-fingered sea lass, and the mysterious wolf boy.
If you want any help, I could try and write something pretty for them.

This is going to be a series, or one great big picture. While I was doing research for this one, I got inspired to do a few more freaks. There's gonna be a bearded lady and a half man. Possibly a snake woman and a giant too. Maybe even a dwarf and an albino.

Thier costume's a bit anachronistic but I'm sure they prefer the snazzy threads of a bit later on
I like the whole kind of symettry to it, and of course your kind of stylization and all in all it's pretty cool even if I can't pinpoint exactitudes.

Thank you.
The twin theme came from the fact that I'm one half of a set of twins. I was born frist and my brother seven minutes after.
I've been fachinated by all kinds of twins for ages.

Oh, and by the way, the expression 'Siamese tweens' was based on Chang and Eng since they came from Siame.. so a poster like that wouldn't be very logical.
But who cares?? Let's parthiy!

Buenos dias art buddy! I really like this pic, and I even noticed the pony tail idea, and the heart embrace they form, very cute! The coloring really does remind me of those old posters. If anything, I don't think those style of boots were existant back then. I think it was those slippers and those ghastly Casper-esque stockings. But still its a very cool pic, great job!

Actually their clothing is more Victorian than medieval.
Freak shows were most popular around the Victorian era through to the turn of the century.
It's mostly the way the girls are joined that's based on Mary and Eliza. They were my refrence material for this.
As for their position:
"...Illustrations show them also joined at the shoulder, although no documented set of conjoined twins has ever shared multiple points of juncture. This illusion was probably created when the sisters walked with their arms wound around each other's shoulders."
