Description
This is an image of the half elven twins – Elrond and Elros. Both had to decide whether to live as elves or as humans. Elrond chose to be an elf. However Elros chose to be a man, and became a mighty Lord of the Edain. Although his lifespan was much greater than modern men, he was mortal and unlike an elf he would truly die. I wanted to make an image that showed them after their choice - that showed the physical changes and differences between them, and also the sadness of their increasing separation which would of course become total when Elros died.I started work on this over three months ago, when I saw the two wonderful sets of Lindowyn’s stock using the same model. However I just couldn’t find a background to make the image work. I finally decided to make my own very complex build in order to express the themes.
I built the arches from a base photo by the incomparable Elandria. I altered the shape to a more gothic arch, and created a bricked off alcove behind Elros. By contrast I’ve totally opened up the arch behind Elrond. I’ve added a shot of a mountain to represent distance both in place and in time – the folds in the mountain make a path winding up behind his shoulder. The foreground is a mix of a photo of my own back yard, with the small half hidden statue, and a multiple cut-paste effort to quadruple the size of the grassy clearing in the base I used for Elrond. I wasn’t that keen on the artificial ear the model was wearing so for Elrond I made my own ear, and also removed his ear lobe.

Awesome...
but I have a little critique... Both characters look like pasted in, dunno if it's the too clear-cut borders around the hair...
I think it's the lighting between background and characters that don't fit perfectly...
(Not that I would be able to make such an awesome photo-realistic art...)

Thanks muchly. I have added a lot of wisps and extra curls to the edges of the hair, but it doesn't really show at the lower res version I've put up on DA - and the high res version is WAY too big a file

Maybe add some extra for the low res version?
I sometimes realize different res versions need such different treatments XD

I think I'm happy with it as it is. What you may be noticing is the difference in skin texture between the brothers - but that is deliberate. I'm trying to show the start of the physical differences between human and elf.

This is wonderful - almost realistic (meaning that it could be a photograph), and I love the use of the same model as twins, with different concepts behind them. And of course the story of Elrond and Elros is especially poignant.
(Incidentally, I used the same stock as the Elrond one for Amrod and Amras. Gmta? )

Thanks muchly - for images like this photorealism is very much what I am aiming at, so you've made my day The story of Elrond has so much heart ache in it - I am sure I will return to it over adn over.

You're on your way! Personally I love that style, perhaps because I can't do it very well - so mine always ends up looking all mix-and-match until I start texturing.
I'm looking forward to seeing more from you - especially Elrond. He is so underrepresented in fan art generally, so it's good to see someone taking a liking to him.

In my naughty days when I broke copyright left right and centre I did a lot of Elronds I'm semi-planning a Celebrian. I'm practicing some techniques I'll need to use on another pic as we speak

Aw, come on - most of us broke copyrights, I'm sure. I know I did before I discovered stock images, even if I never published those things anywhere.
Celebrian? Awesome, would love to see that, and also looking forward to your next manip. *goes to watch* If you need help, let me know?

kiwidoc In reply to LadyElleth [2009-09-04 10:48:02 +0000 UTC]
Ahh - you haven't seen my attempts at painting The thing with manniping is that you can get away with hands that are perhaps a bit shaky, or not quite doing what you tell them to

Yes, very true. Was just wondering since I usually use a mouse and PS for manipping, with or without shaky hands.

There are days like that. Don't worry, have a cup of tea, and it'll go alright. Personally I'm finding it problematic to find stock for my latest project... not a good day all around?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
kiwidoc In reply to LadyElleth [2009-09-04 13:03:02 +0000 UTC]
Sometimes you just have to sit and roll through page after page after page of stock to find what you need ... it's a bore adn a pain. It's probably wiser to see the stock and then design the project but we never seem to do it that way round
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
LadyElleth In reply to kiwidoc [2009-09-04 15:07:58 +0000 UTC]
That's definitely the case with some manips - though don't you ever see an image which you just have to use, regardless whether or not you found the rest of the stock you'll need for the final manip?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
kiwidoc In reply to LadyElleth [2009-09-04 15:35:58 +0000 UTC]
Oh yes - some stocks leap off the screen and grab me by the ears, demanding to be made into an image ... and then I spend many, many hours hunting for the other bits ... or worse, teaching myself the extra skills I need to make the image (which is days not hours - or even weeks!)
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
LadyElleth In reply to kiwidoc [2009-09-04 18:37:46 +0000 UTC]
That sounds so very familiar, though I do admire you for your thorough approach... I usually just grab a tutorial, follow the steps and then forget about it again unless it will be a handy skill to keep, so actually teaching yourself - wow!
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
kiwidoc In reply to LadyElleth [2009-09-04 21:14:40 +0000 UTC]
I use tutorials to teach myself - and it takes ages as my memory is so bad. I've only had the patience to tackle a few things - like learning to paint some extra bits of hair for myself, or doing some serious experimenting with layer blend styles.
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
LadyElleth In reply to kiwidoc [2009-09-05 02:08:39 +0000 UTC]
Some of the best results always happen through experimenting. If I hadn't gone crazy with texture images and blending styles, I don't think my style would look as it did today, so patience and repetition and experimentation are probably the best ways, in addition of following tutorials. Don't give up.

My hubby is a woodturner, and he always said if you aren't breaking things and making bowls that a re crap everyso often you aren't trying hard enough. I think it's the same with us - if we don't try some things that end up looking god awful we aren't stretching ourselves enough

LadyElleth In reply to kiwidoc [2009-09-05 17:07:29 +0000 UTC]
Your hubby is very right about that. Without constantly pushing ourselves and trying hard, we're hardly learning anything. After all, practice makes makes perfect.

I'm not a fan of Quendi with pointed ears but you did a good job here, Elrond looks very natural (I think they both looked the same in this aspect, though). Good job on the wall as well and I really like the idea with opening space behind Elrond. Well done!

Many thanks for this. I made the elven ear a little larger than I think they really were firstly to emphasise the beginning of the differences between the twins, and secondly because most people don't look at the download. Things need to be a bit more "in-your-face" in a smaller image
I will definitely submit this to the club eventually. I've just sent you a note with links some earlier pieces.
