Description
This is an image of the half elven twins – Elrond and Elros. Both had to decide whether to live as elves or as humans. Elrond chose to be an elf. However Elros chose to be a man, and became a mighty Lord of the Edain. Although his lifespan was much greater than modern men, he was mortal and unlike an elf he would truly die. I wanted to make an image that showed them after their choice - that showed the physical changes and differences between them, and also the sadness of their increasing separation which would of course become total when Elros died.I started work on this over three months ago, when I saw the two wonderful sets of Lindowyn’s stock using the same model. However I just couldn’t find a background to make the image work. I finally decided to make my own very complex build in order to express the themes.
I built the arches from a base photo by the incomparable Elandria. I altered the shape to a more gothic arch, and created a bricked off alcove behind Elros. By contrast I’ve totally opened up the arch behind Elrond. I’ve added a shot of a mountain to represent distance both in place and in time – the folds in the mountain make a path winding up behind his shoulder. The foreground is a mix of a photo of my own back yard, with the small half hidden statue, and a multiple cut-paste effort to quadruple the size of the grassy clearing in the base I used for Elrond. I wasn’t that keen on the artificial ear the model was wearing so for Elrond I made my own ear, and also removed his ear lobe.

I think the ear size is right! Indeed if they were real people it could be different, but as illustration always things are "in-our-faces", other way it would be hard to tell a story

Also you have to make things more obvious, or you get accused of "not being fantasy" even when they are Tolkien illustrations

I can only imagine the nightmare that was blending that grass. I'll always have a soft spot for these boys, especially Elrond. He's my long-time favorite.
You did very well portraying them here-- and some innovative ways to make new buildings, too. Thanks for sharing!

I confess. It took me nearly three hours just to do all the grass and make it all blend in But nobody makes stock on close-up long grass in focus - everyone sets their focus on the bloody background! And the grass in my garden just wasn't long enough
But I am pleased with the way it works
