Description
So here is the scenario....=Babyc8kes and I were shooting the Elk rut in Rocky Mountain National Park early one morning, and we basically had the area to ourselves which was nice, considering how packed it can get. This Bull was ...let's just say a bit on the mental side. He was also gigantic. Leasha was braced up against a split rail fence shooting with her Tamron 200-500mm and I was inside the car freezing my collective butt off. She looked at me and said "John, John! Look,!" and pointed to the right, and here was a female cow Elk not 20 feet from my window. The first thought was "Cool!" and then it hit me....we were right between a Bull and a member of his harem. The female seemed kind of startled but yet inquisitive about us, and I looked back at Leasha, then the Bull, and noticed he was noticing this. "Oh no...not good...." and I looked at Leasha and said "Ummm Leasha this is NOT a good spot, and this is not good at all" and I looked at the Bull and he started getting this crazy look I know all to well, from being charged before, and his head starts to rear back and I yelled at Leasha "Umm Leasha! LEASHA! Get in the car! NOW! Leasha!" and with that....he bolted in our direction, and fast, rounding up the cow just a few feet from us. My heart about stopped......This is one of the very last shots I took before he bolted in our direction, and here he is about to break in to it all. When they get this look, head rearing back, and looking at you, it is time to GTFO now!
I think I lost 30 pounds from this happening lol
Captured with my Tamron 200-400mm
I hope you all like it
John
ps---Bull Elk don't like Donuts either....sadly

Wonderful! Elk are so beautiful, and obviously aggressive! This reminds me of when we were in Yellowstone and a buffalo was running towards our car. My husband was busy taking shots while I freaked out! The buffalo wasn't nearly so intent on us though, he was just trotting at us.
Great shot!

I remember that look from years ago. And i had my son, who was three or four at the time riding on my shoulders. I very quietly and carefully backed out slowly, and he just stared at me as i did so. Maybe my son kept him from charging. Or maybe God did. Or maybe he just took pity on a naive young father not paying attention.
Great shot you have here!

John-
Outstanding story. I laughed so hard reading this. I've had a few encounters just like this when i lived around the Wasatch mountain range, near salt lake. It's those times you remember most and talk about later -as well as laugh later too. you got a great shot and lost 30 lbs...what a deal! lol Hope the fall colors are going great back in the states. take some good ones for me!

Mmmm... not a nice expression indeed! But you were standing between him and his w-o-m-a-n! That is serious stuff John!!!!
Anyway I totally loved to see the way you captured the: "come over here and I'll give you a kiss or two" expression.
