Description The predecessor to the Horizon class of cruisers and the upgrade to the Daedalus class, the Archon class of cruisers were general purpose military and exploration vessels with a standard array of weapons (for the time), and a complement of shuttle craft for solar system and planetary survey missions.Β  These ships were originally designed for the Romulan War, but were commissioned after the was ended. The were among the most common Federation starships built prior to the introduction of the Constitution class.Β  In 2167 the Archon was destroyed at Beta III, after being pulled from orbit by the Landru Computer and crashing on the planet.

But I will say this, I agree with Richard Sternback that the Galaxy class engines are too small for the size of the ship.Β

especially with all the stuff it has added. the phaser lance, cloacking device, TRANSWARP DRIVE?! you can't just shoehorn all that into a 20 year old galaxy class. it would be like trying to take a SW ship and give it warp drive.

I've heard that a lot of people really hate this ship, (the one it's based on) am I one of the few that don't mind it.Β  I've seen far worse ships.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Kodai-Okuda In reply to AngelisGoodwen [2018-10-09 17:04:55 +0000 UTC]

Wonder why?Β  It was the basis (the design sketches anyway) for the USS Discovery from Stanley Kubric's movie 2001, and many people love that ship.
I like the idea of the Daedalus class of ships looking more like what one would expect early Terran-designed starships to be like.Β  Personally, I dilsike most of the ships from ST:E and now ST because they look too far advanced for their time (the NX-01, while a good looking ship, is too much like an Akira class which incorporates more advanced design features than the ST:TOS Constitution class, so it looks out of place for its time-frame in my opinion, and the ships from STD look way off for the 2240s and 50s).
The Daedalus fits perfectly for a transitional ship type of the late 2100s to mid-2200s.Β  It was an official design by Matt Jefferies himself and so I've no problems with it.

I personally liked Enterprise, though I understand what you're saying.Β  I does sometimes look a little more advanced then TOS.Β  But I think they could have just given the TOS a bit of a face lift, and I don't think Enterprise did anything to mess up the TOS timeline or tech advancement.

The stories were great (as I said), but the look of the show was too much.Β  The Klingon Bird of Prey was out of place since that was essentially a Romulan ship type from ST:TOS.Β  The one in the ST:3 was supposed to be Romulan, but they changed it to Klingon and kept it as a BOP.Β  That was a mistake that has stuck with the franchise ever since.Β  While it was okay since it could be explained by the Klingon-Romulan technological exchange of the 2260s, the one in ST:E cannot be so easily explained away since there was no such exchange during Archer's time.Β  That is only one example of some of the missteps of ST:E.Β  I don't hate the show (like i do STD), but it could have been done better in my opinion in terms of technology and keeping things consistent.Β  Hopefully CBS will correct all the aesthetic mistakes from the 1st season and just sweep it under the rug (with the 2nd season becoming an unofficial 1st season).Β  Otherwise the show is sunk.Β

Yeah, I've seen every Star Trek series but TOS and Discovery.Β  From what I've heard Discovery isn't worth it.Β  And I've tired to watch TOS but I just get turn off by it for some reason, I don't know why.......

So I didn't know when the tech sharing started between the Klingons and Romulans...

Kodai-Okuda In reply to AngelisGoodwen [2018-10-10 19:29:28 +0000 UTC]

I understand about ST:TOS.Β  It is a product of the 1960s and has many themes that are a turn-off for many people.Β  I dislike the politics of the original show.Β  STD suffers from the same problem in addition to horrid aesthetics for when the show is supposed to take place.

AngelisGoodwen In reply to Kodai-Okuda [2018-10-10 23:22:36 +0000 UTC]

If only it was just that simple.....Β  They are shows I should like because they have everything I like but for some reason I can not explain I just can't get into the show, even when I try I just get board with it almost immediately.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Kodai-Okuda In reply to AngelisGoodwen [2018-10-11 17:27:00 +0000 UTC]

Perhaps they turn you off because there is not much thought or "soul" (in the literary sense) put into them?Β  STD does seem like just another "pew-pew" action show set in space.Β  It lacks the intellectual edge that previous incarnations of Star Trek had in my opinion.

AngelisGoodwen In reply to Kodai-Okuda [2018-10-11 18:15:38 +0000 UTC]

That could be it....Β  I thought I was going to like the Sy-Fy series Defiance, but I just couldn't get into it....Β  But I'm not going to get the CBS steam thing just for STD..... especially with all I've heard....

I've watched STD, but I cannot say how............, and let's just say that it is meh.Β  The story is actually not bad, but the aesthetic is so awful that it does not feel like Star Trek.Β  For me, it is very disappointing since I think that if it had a JJ-Abrams or Axanar style to it in terms of what the ships, aliens, and overall look of it; the show would be good.Β

Kodai-Okuda In reply to AngelisGoodwen [2018-10-14 21:11:13 +0000 UTC]

I think the STD story (overall) is a good idea, but the execution was horrid.Β  It's like Bryan Fuller was mad at CBS and decided to make the show look awful in terms of the Klingons and Federation.Β  It's like a Star Trek-Battlestar Galactica crossover made by a wealthy group of fans.Β  I look at the warp nacelles and greebling of the Federation ships and I instantly think Battlestar Galactica.Β  The Klingorc ships look like Wraith vessels from Stargate Atlantis, and the use of the Spore Drive is reminiscent of Frank Herbert's Dune (which was unnecessary since the slip-stream drive system in Star Trek has not been fully vetted/explored and STD would have been a great opportunity for that).Β  None of that fits into Star Trek in my opinion so it make STD feel disjointed and like a totally different sci-fi show that just happens to have the Star Trek label slapped on it.Β

I also heard that there was a copy right claim on STD, that they stole a lot of ideas from a video game.Β  There were characters stolen and the hole Spore Drive was supposedly from the game.

Yes.Β  Aaron Harberts was responsible for that.Β  The Tardigrade does not appear in Bryan Fuller's original ideas for STD.Β  Currently the lawsuit is going through the courts.

Doomcock did a fine job of laying out the case.

I've seen others lay it out well enough.Β  To me it's little more then water cooler talk, (not to down play what he's going through).Β  At the end of the day, this won't end STD or make it a better show, just an interesting little side story about it.

Kodai-Okuda In reply to AngelisGoodwen [2018-10-15 17:10:31 +0000 UTC]
