With the success of the Shiratsuyu class of Scout Destroyer , the Federation contracted for a new fleet of Destroyer-Escorts and Scouts to replace the ailing stock of existing Shiratsuyu class ships.Β The increasingly hostile encounters with the Klingons inside of the frontier of UFP space also caused the Federation to quickly begin replacing their Shiratsuyu class ships since they were no match for the D3, let along D4 and D5 type Klingon warships.Related content

AngelisGoodwen, made a good point about the Saladin as a Destroyer.
It is too small, and too under-gunned.
I might change it to a Destroyer-Escort, not sure yet.

Β I can see what that person meant, but I can also see why it was originally a destroyer, since it has been decades with any more designs becoming available since then, like the USS Sentinel (from Cygnus X-1) becoming a good destroyer, but the Saladin could be a good patrol ship and escort, so I agree

This looks just to light weight and under armed to be a Destroyer....

At the time of its construction spatial torpedoes were still the main projectile weapon, the addition of photon torpedo launchers is why it is a destroyer.
It was also built during peace-time, so it has survey, patrol, courier, and science facilities inside of as it is not a dedicated warship.
The original Franz Joseph design only has six-phasers/lasers and two photons.
That is the design I am using for this model.

I think this ship should be a frigate or scout, wall this (USS Surya Data Sheet ) should be a destroyer.....Β But that's just me.....

I see your point, and I might alter this ship class to Destroyer-Escort, since the original design is pretty small.
However, that means I'd have to go back and change the Durandal class to the same designation and make a Destroyer (probably the Detroyat class), which is not a problem, just means it will take a little more time.
I'll see what I can muster up.
