Description
Built in 2151, the NCX-001 (Naval Commission Experimental contract) technology demonstrator was launched. Christened U.S.S. Enterprise under the command of Captain Johnathan Archer, this ship was the first of twelve experimental designs. NCX-001 to NCX-006 were built as "Perimeter Action Ships" which acted in the role of both a science-frigate and a patrol destroyer. A wide range of weapons were fitted to each of the six "frigate" configuration NCXs, while NCX-007 to NCX-012 were fitted with a secondary hull and classified as Territorial Defense ships (those will be discussed under the NCX-007 data sheet).
The most famous of the NCX-001 type ships was the U.S.S. Loknar NCX-004. That ship was the first to encounter warships of the Romulan Star Empire and survive in 2152. NCX-01 Enterprise had been crippled during its encounter with the Xinti in mid-2153 and decommissioned. NCX-003 U.S.S. Larson was captured by Orion pirates and had to be hunted down by NCX-006 Athena. The ensuing battle left both ships severely damaged causing them to have to be towed back to Starbase 2 for repairs. NCX-005 Hercules suffered a warp accident while attempting to maintain Warp 5 for more than forty-minutes and was forced to jettison her warp-core after stress fractures caused it to go into a cascading breach.
In 2155 the outbreak of the Earth-Romulan war caused the NCX-01 class of ship to be renamed the Loknar Class frigate, large numbers of these ships were produced for the war and served for over 100-years afterwards.
