Such a fluffy scientifically accurate velociraptor.Β

A bit more accurate than her mom for having feathers, but there are still plenty of other differences. I'll go more into detail about some of them in the next update's commentary.

Most prominently her forelimbs are a very different shape to what a scientifically accurate dromaeosaurid's would be like, since raptor forelimbs are wings, but we didn't know that - very well at least - back in the early 1990's, and the JW raptors' anatomy is still mostly based on science from that long ago. Under the feathers a Velociraptor would look more like this , with the forelimbs' shape being necessary for the wings to properly function. Skye's wings are always going to be a bit wonky because of her pronated (downturned) wrists.

Well you learn something new each day. Honestly think it would be a much different story if the dinosaurs where much closer to their counterpart.Β

Well, more or less. Velociraptors were actually much smaller than the movie shows. Like--about knee-high. So, technically, an adult would be the size of the baby in this illustration.

kosmonauttihai In reply to iamSketchH [2019-10-25 06:28:37 +0000 UTC]

Very true, this baby is already a bit bigger, even. I figure whatever dromaeosaurid they actually are, it's called Velociraptor in the alternate universe Jurassic Park takes place in, but yeah it definitely would not be from the genus we know as Velociraptor in the real world.

The JP/W Velociraptor is such a funny mashup creature in how their build is modeled after one dromaeosaurid (Deinonychus, which the pack hunting behavior also comes from), they're named after another dromaeosaurid (originally due to Michael Crichton using reference material that treated Deinonychus as a species of Velociraptor when writing the book the first movie is based on, but as I recall both he and Spielberg ended up keeping the name because it just sounded more dramatic), they're the size of a third one that hadn't even been discovered yet when the first movie was made, let alone when the book was written (Achillobator, or Dakotaraptor which at least lived in the area where Doctors Sattler and Grant are digging up a "Velociraptor"), and some of their social behavior when compared to present-day animals is more characteristic of mammals than dinosaurs (birds).

What's scientifically accurate about long-extinct animals changes up all the time as new things are discovered, but yeah it's pretty safe to say the JP/W raptor is a fictional dinosaur, though based on some real ones.

And we can confirm now a baby raptor is indeed lethal at 8 months and older, though this one, it seems, by somewhat unconventional means.

Awwww.

Even older? Well, she clearly has not heard of Rexy then. Old, but not obsolete.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

kosmonauttihai In reply to MugenSeiRyuu [2019-10-24 14:26:43 +0000 UTC]

I don't think she has. She hatched a year after what might be the last time Blue has seen any sign of Rexy, unless they've run into each other after the events of Fallen Kingdom, and I'm not sure how well animals can tell each other about someone the other has never met. Crows can pass on to other crows the knowledge of which humans have been nice or mean to them, but I'm not sure whether it might need showing the human in question to the other crow at least from a distance. (Though I guess it's also possible Skye already knows about Rexy on some level, though not as an individual, if the JP/W Velociraptors are that universe's version of Dakotaraptor, since they lived in the same area and at the same time as T. rexes did back in the Mesozoic. Maybe there's some instinct remaining in them about how to deal with rexes if their ancestors were their neighbors.) lol but I'm getting off track. Children have no sense of scale re: age, I remember thinking 12-year-olds are basically adults and 20-year-olds must be so old and wise and have everything figured out back when I was like 7. "Older than my parents" is kind of automatically ancient regardless of said parents' actual age.

She might prefer something like chin scritches, less restraining. Or perhaps preening help with the pin feathers, humans make for pretty good assistants at that for pet birds at least, because hands. Though she might also prefer to chomp any hand that gets brought close enough to touch, so there's that.
