i'm pretty much disappointed lately by all the people who prefer positive themes in photography. vivid warm colors, smiles and all that c--p. and they're not saying it out loud of course, they just tend to like crazy any tanned girl in orange swimsuit and... that's it, nothing else matters at this point. and of course they ignore everything else. it's a good thing minor key is normal and respected in music. what's so wrong about some pain and drama in photography?

i don't like to use the word like, its pretty mediocre but i will say that your picture has drawn me.
she makes me think of the shades who lie in wait for their cheating lovers on the otherside ready to wreak revenge.
its cool to be creeped out

Those long fingers like kinda like feathers of the crows wings. It all adds to the creepy atmosphere!

terrifying. and i agree completely with what you said about bikinis and blondes. this is wonderful because it's something different; you don't see too many horrifying portraits-- perfect nightmare material. well done

Stunning photograph. You have talent!

You're right that far too many photos on this website are of preppy, happy-go-lucky girls. It's unfortunate; to them I think DeviantArt is just an alternative to Myspace [sigh]. I mean, some of them ARE very good, but the majority...

Anyway, onto the pic itself. I love it. The dark colors work magnificently with the model. It was effective to have her long, wet hair cover the breasts just enough to be suggestive (not in a sexual way, but more as a sense of power -- does that make any sense?). But I think what I like most is the pose. There's two ways I look at it:

1) She looks crucified. The crows (are those crows? Maybe I need glasses) in the background add to the theme due to their association with death.

2) She looks like a scarecrow. The scarecrow is an old but common theme in horror, and this image is indeed a morbid one.

I'm very impressed!

Kostassoid In reply to rabid-riolu [2009-08-06 21:00:55 +0000 UTC]

thank you!
her pose remind me of the cross and a scarecrow. that's why there're crows (yes, it's them), but it's really something from unknown scary story.
and DA is a place for everyone indeed, and most people don't think too much about the meaning behind the picture. which is normal of course, but not ok in many ways.

In answer to your question, people seem to prefer upbeat imagery because the darker stuff makes them feel uncomfortable, creeped out, or makes them sad. Minor key music plays on sympathy (usually), so people don't actually feel sad, they just listen to other people feel sad. The visual arts are a whole lot more affecting on the psyche. Regardless, it's a beautiful shot, and a very valid point.

Kostassoid In reply to Holliana27 [2009-08-04 23:23:15 +0000 UTC]

that's a wise thought about music. i'm still not sure about images though. either you're right or people generally don't care and just let mass media decide for them. anyway i don't think it's gonna change.

I really like this one.
Just too bit noisy for me.
Idea and execution are just great. And the crows in the back...just awesome. How did u manage them to fly like that?
(Or are they just a brush? It's in the "photography" section so... )

I really like dark and negative photos and works over the bright and jolly ones.
Positive works are almost always just too boring and similar to each other. (That's just my personal view.)
It seems to me that dark(er) photos display feelings more better than the light one.
Anyhow - great work mate.

i actually liked all the noise, even enchanced it. adds to the right mood. as for the crows, they're added afterwards. and the girl was heavily modified. but all my images are heavily post-processed, basically it's still a photography.
i'm glad you enjoyed it!

Well, I don't really agree. There's a lot of people seeking dark art (not talking about emos, but that's kinda special sort... ). The only problem as I see it is that many "dark artists" tend to follow the stupid rule "more gore = more art" without effort to include some meaning or they just repeat all the cliches that have been done a thousand times over and over again (broken angels, pointless sad faces etc.).

Also, I believe that our thoughts are more powerful than most people realize... like anything we think about tends to become real sooner or later. That's why I try to stay positive, think positive and seek positive stuff to surround me.

Not that I'm saying positive works can't be stupid And of course, I like some dark (or melancholic) works too. Basically there are two types of works that interest me - one is a stuff that makes you think. The other is a pure aesthetics (where I don't really care about a meaning).

Finally, about this of photo of yours - I really like it - cause it's dark, but it's also decent and the mood seems to be very convincing (not the fake exaggarated style I see around way too often). Well done

a lot of people seek dark art, true, but can you really compare them to the whole army of pointless media consumers? of course, i don't blame artistically made positive images, i can enjoy them too, though rarely
thank you for your kind words!

StrixCZ In reply to Kostassoid [2009-08-05 11:18:07 +0000 UTC]

Well, I think there's a commercial industry to blame. They're using mostly appealing themes to make a positive association with the products and make us buy. Sad to say, most people are sheep and they tend to accept anything they see/hear often enough (no matter how stupid or kitschy it is) and they also automatically reject things they're not used to. I studied graphic design. But when I finished the school and I found out what's the job really about, I quit after the first 3 month and I don't plan to come back ever again. I don't wanna be a trendwhore.

When I create, I create because I need to and I don't really care if it's gonna make me famous one day. I see the cheap (yet unfortunatelly very powerful) tricks many like-to-be artists use to get attention but I won't do that. I wanna be myself, I wanna create my own little worlds and I wanna express the things that lie (no pun intended ) within me. That's it. That's the way of art I believe in. Yeah, I probably won't get an army of admirers. That's just fine, as long as I stay sincere

I'm not really a fan of the smiley, tanned girls in orange swimsuits, anyway. This is beautiful, certainly the kind of atmosphere that there needs to be more of in photography these days.

My mom is a professional photographer, and she forces me to model for her happy, summery pictures, when I'd really rather be a model for a piece like this.

well, try to show it to her maybe, convince her it'll be fun. who knows
but yeah, it won't work, you'll need a dark soul. which you'll find. or it'll find you.

I agree. People tend to lose themselves in the happyland that others have created. We need a little darkness to balance out the light. Crow Master is an excellent example of the dark side of that balance. What other macabre message can you send out, that can wake these people up from their happy little dreams?
