Very helpful
for some reason, I always thought masking fluid would pick up the color underneath..
Good to know it isn't

Well, I just read about the lightbox. I've tried the technique you just mentioned about transferring the drawing onto the watercolour paper. To me it pretty tires my whole arm out. So I would like to suggest a glass table and an LED torchlight. I tried it out and it's really convenient since it's similar to a real lightbox.

Mmm yes that would work well too. Windows are definitely tiring for the back OTL.

When you make the background in step 4, I get that you add a base color, but do you wait for that to dry before adding more colors? Also, how do you add the colors or water? Do you just wait for it to drip off the brush? I've tried backgrounds like that before, but can never get them right.

SparkCat In reply to ??? [2011-07-13 15:02:12 +0000 UTC]

ok so when I use a brush for the frisket it not only destroys the bristles but completely coats them with a layer of rubber
does this happen to yours or do you do something to minimize the destruction?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

koyamori In reply to SparkCat [2011-07-14 03:58:19 +0000 UTC]

Nope I use an old brush so it doesn't matter if it's ruined.

Actually no, this was the very beginning so I was experimenting still. I don't use masking fluid anymore. C:

I've been thinking about picking up some masking fluid, and this tutorial has made me think I was dumb just to 'think' about it. My only problem is the money. What size bottles have you seen, and are they on the cheap side or expensive side?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

koyamori In reply to sC-facTion [2011-07-11 15:00:04 +0000 UTC]

From what I know, you don't need a very big bottle to start with.
There's one that's on sale right now, called Dr.Ph.Martin masking fluid. Around 5 bucks but I'm not sure if that's just an art store specific promotion.

How did you paint around the girl so that the watercolor did not bleed into her outline too much?

koyamori In reply to kyoto240 [2011-04-13 15:11:21 +0000 UTC]

Mmm, I use 140lb paper so the colours pretty much follow my brush and don't bleed. C:
