I know some people use melted wax as well.
But actually without masking fluid, as long as you have a steady hand it's not too hard to paint some details and quicker too.

Cool! Is a wash when you go over everything with a colour?

It could be multiple colours but it's basically a very loosely painted watery layer. C:

Your tutorial and artworks are brilliant! Maybe you can also help me with my ploblem.. When I'm putting masking fluid over already painted areas (even those which dried months ago) it takes the paint off revealing the paper! I'm using Talens Van Gogh watercolors, Talens masking fluid and Clairefontaine 180g paper. I'll be very pleased if you have any idea..!

Thanks so much!
Actually, if the paint is not absorbed into the watercolour paper, it can unfortunately come off with the masking fluid. There are staining (colours that go into paper and will not easily come off) and granulating (colours that form little bits on paper and will rub off) colours.
I think tubes are labeled with St for staining and G for granulating. Maybe you can try using the staining colours as first layers?

Thank you a lot! I didn't knew about that.
Although all my colours are marked 'S'.. Maybe that is because VanGogh are student's quality..?

will the masking work on all types of paper, specifically water color paper. cuz i have different kinds of watercolor paper and i want to make sure it wont tear any paintings in the process.

Thanks so much!
Wash is when you lay down a light layer of colour on your entire piece of paper with water. It creates very blurry effects.^^

i was thinking about drawing water or water with bubbles, white one - to compare with the color of water or blood, but they are all so small, i mean, tiny, so it is impossible to draw using normal methods - like painting color around it... to me it is impossible... Then i remember that some of your artworks are pretty similar to what i was wondering, and i saw your tutorials. Thank you for sharing it - i have never known of the masking fluid, eventhough in the past in think i had heard something about masking when drawing and painting...
i haven't got my watercolor yet - it will arrive in maybe 1 or 2 weeks, and now i am using gouache, tempera gouache. If you know anything about it, can you plz tell me? as i was coloring, i find it not as light or clear as watercolor. Also, i don't know how to make the color spread - when drop it on the paper and just let it dry, and the edge of it spreads outside, bold, but fade inside? does the paper quality effect that? cause i have already read your other tutorials and the paper i use are 150g (a chinese sketchbook) and 160g/m (canson mixed media paper)

Hello there~~ Pardon me for the late reply!
I guess by now you've probably gotten your watercolours.
Gouache and tempera paints like you said are very opaque and powdery, so they are very hard to spread unlike watercolour. It's not entirely impossible though, you'd just have to water it down significantly.
If you want the outside to be bold, and the inside to fate, it is best to use watercolour for that effect. After you lay down the colour, you can drop a few splashes of water with your brush in the middle of the colour, and the water will spread outwards, taking some pigments with it to leave the middle lighter.
The paper does affect the quality though, Canson mixed media should work ok. C:

I usually buy them in an art store. Is there any around you?

rawr-smile13 In reply to koyamori [2012-01-29 12:22:25 +0000 UTC]
nope. the bookstore are the closest things we have for art stores! i'd hav to travel out of town to buy art stuff. and it not really something i have the luxury of doing sigh....
al though i slightly manage to use wax from candles. but i dont think its good for your technique!
oh yeah! i made something!!! i just need to buy a new scanner and i'll have you see it! credits goes to you of course for the REALLY REALLY helpful tutorials!

Oh~~ That's unfortunate! >:
But I guess masking isn't 100% necessary. You could always use other things too with your paintings to create neat effects, like salt or coffee/tea etc.

Just wondering, does scrapping off the masking fluid rip the paper? and does it cost a lot? thanks
π: 0 β©: 1
koyamori In reply to hellousagi145 [2012-01-05 03:09:25 +0000 UTC]
If you have good watercolour paper, it shouldn't rip it.
Masking generally does not cost that much, maybe 5$.

Wow
Your drawings are so neat though! I could never do that. For some reason watercolour hates me XD (but i'm still improving!)
The only things i have to work with is a size 14 brush and a pack of watercolour pencils...haha
