I like this a lot, I find the sunset colors warming and blended, the character fits very well and isn't so stereotypical like a lot of other art I see for Applejack.

do you use photoshop?! I wish i knew the secret brush to get that epic sunset shading! Ive been knockin the opacity down on a black but if you dont color an area rigt and go over it in place it like gets darker in ugly places bahaha

Hi, yes i usually use Photoshop but this picture was colored (mostly) in SAI with the marker tool. This tool has a different way of building up multiple transparent brushstrokes. I also used the water tool to smudge some areas.
If you experiment with the marker tool in SAI you will immediately see the difference to the brush tool in photoshop.
As for the soft shading throughout the body - that was done with a curves adjustment layer later in photoshop. (The background, outlines and body colors were on different layers) I created a curves adjustment layer above the color layer of applejack (by alt-clicking on the border between both layers in the layer panel you can assign a layer to only influence the layer that it is assigned to) and set it so that it would make everything darker by dragging down the middle of the curve. Then i set the mask for this adjustment layer to black and (using a soft brush) painted only those areas in that i wanted to be darker.
