I know it would take my PC ages to render it, and it's no slouch.

Oh, i got that wrong - the 3d rendering took about one hour (add a few more for re-rendering and crashing). Most of the work was done by actually painting the image in Photoshop. The render itself was just the mesh with a rough texture and the 3d fur was very rough too.
What you see in the image was painted with custom brushes and puzzled together with fur textures form photos - that's was took most of the time.
