It seems there has been alot of buzz about Derpy being "fixed". I saw the New version of Derpy in "The Last Round-Up" and I do admit it didn't settle well with me. I still enjoyed the original. I didn't like the reason why they had her change. It didn't seem at all offensive in my opinion. When I first saw the scene in the animatic, I literally burst with joy. But I had a feeling that it might not settle with some fans and some people. Especially since people already have their own version of Derpy and people might get the wrong idea of her character.

Its not often that cartoons show fan content. Cause sometimes when you include Fan content, it usually can result to something negative (to fans or to others). And sometimes it also endangers the identity/essence of the show. Or if people like it, they will probably expect a lot more.To the point they might expect TOO much. So you could imagine my surprise when they decided to name Derpy and give her a voice.

Derpy has became more than just some fancy Easter egg in the show. She's became an Icon, a symbol to the fans of MLP:FIM. Though Derpy was created in a studio, her character was created by the fans.  You can probably say that she represents all Bronies everywhere. Fans have enjoyed Derpy whenever they see her in the background until the point when she talked. The entire studio loves her as well. I was there in one of those Livestream chatrooms when people first heard her talk. It was quite entertaining how happy people were. So its no surprise to see people get really upset by this.

In a way, I understand why majority of fans are upset but blaming, pointing fingers and throwing hate around is not the way to do this. You're forgetting your own motto "Love and Tolerance". You bronies are one of inspiration and our greatest achievement. Don't sully your name by spreading Hate and intolerance. Remember, Tolerance is not the same as acceptance. If you are upset with something, display it in a more positive way. You'll get your message across much better than lashing it out with hate. Show some respect. Show some humility.

Oh I also want to address on a artist name Yamino. I've heard that she has been garnered a lot of hate by the Brony Community due to her not liking Derpy's portrayal. Let it be known, that she had NOTHING to do with the sudden change. She expressed an opinion on Derpy. That is all. She did not ask me to do this or anyone on the staff. I had to say this because the hate she's been receiving is unnecessary. So leave her be.

Also don't spam notes and messages to the people who work on the show. You're probably not going to get much out of it.

On the issue on Derpy whether she'll have the same Derp face expression and stuff. The show will still go on and I hope you will continue to support the show. Though Derpy is a great character, she is not essentially the reason why the show is awesome (though she is one of the Reasons). If Derpy never existed on that fateful scene in the first episode, would MLP be a bad show? Remember MLP is a great show because for what it is. I didn't know about Derpy until someone from the Studio pointed it out. I hope you'll still enjoy the show no matter what happens.

I hope this message will ease some of your minds. Thank you.

We got a minor edit to an iTunes episode that probably won't be duplicated. And since we saw Derpy in the new ep, she's clearly not going away, derp eyes and all.

However, Hasbro is most likely too terrified of this fanbase now due to our hostility to ever give Derpy another speaking role again.

Also, ignoring us completely would be completely removing Derpy. Compromising is keeping Derpy in but omitting the name just to make it less offensive. Compromising shouldn't lead to death threats and hoardes of angry letters to Hasbro. Kreoss warned against that. People who side with you didn't listen.

But the point was that it wasn't offensive in the first place.
Infact many people have spoken out who actually have the traits Derpy was accused of and actually praised the character.
The fact Hasbro changed it therefore makes it offensive, we listened.
But just because a decision was made, doesn't make it the right one.
I understand WHY it happened, and I understand HOW it happened, but the evidence was there, the numbers were all there, and we just got ignored.
We wouldn't have hostality if they didn't still go ahead with it.
Comedic and clumsy characters are a staple in every cartoon, Hasbro should have ignored the complaints, they lose a tiny, tiny amount of viewers, big deal.
Not only have they now upset a lot of fans, but they have also MADE Derpy offensive in doing so.
That therefore puts US in the wrong, and that's not fair.

What people find offensive is objective. Clearly, there was a sizable sum of people who did find it offensive and thus, Hasbro changed it so.

What's done is done, there's no point protesting.

The attacks on Yamino are by no means Representative of the fans. There's always going to be trolls and over zealous fans out there who say stupid things. Such things exist in every fandom, political movement, ext. Just look at what some sports fans do when their teams win or loose. That said, I also don't think Yamino was right to take the hurt she must have felt and turn it around and attack all the fans for the actions of those very stupid few.

I have to agree with you here. Yamino and your opinion on Derpy. First, I don't understand why people are upset by her. If she really was just expressing her opinion then I don't understand why people should blame her. Also, did someone mention death threats? WHAT?! These guys... Must really have it out on her... Not cool guys! We are Bronies so that means we love and tolerate! Not act like Discord just messed with our brains and corrupted us! And with your opinion on Derpy, I agree. I don't know how anything could be branded offensive unless it was something really serious on T.V like a racist ad or if an offensive action was done in real life. I just don't understand why people are overreacting over one ponies intended personality. I just hope what you say is right... I hope Derpy does come back for a... well... a come-back! I am fearanger, and I approve of this.

When I read this I thought "Wow, this person is really amazing." I'm not that big of a fan of the show but when people ask me why I like it, I always talk about the staff and how awesome they are. Even if it wasn't related to something that I like, seeing something like this would still make me really happy because it's nice to see tolerant people who can express their opinions in a mature manner and in such an articulate way. After reading this, I feel like I should give more love to Friendship is Magic ; I hope you continue being awesome, the world could certainly use some more of it.

I read : [[If Derpy never existed on that fateful scene in the first episode, would MLP be a bad show? ]]
Actually, derpy is one of the major reasons that the show is always entertaining, not only from playing the ~were is waldo/charlie~ game wit derpy but also because she add a lot of entertainment. If derpy never existed, i strongly believe i would get tired of the show before it 3e serie come out, but her existence and only her existence might double the time the serie will be fairly interesting, specially since her presence add more "potential" for future episodes.
seriously, the change on derpy did killed half my interest on MLP series ...
And it total removal would had killed ¾ of my interest (frustration on some unfair event, can kill even the best fun of a show or a game, whatever how good it was !)
Im totally sure there plenty of Brownies that feel the same, specially since so many complains and commented videos on the subject i saw in just a hour, whiteout even searching hard.

and BTW, you work on the MLP serie for real ?

I really liked Derpy the way she was before. Why people felt the need to flip their shit about a fictional pony is beyond me. Personally, I just think they ran out of things to bitch and complain about, so they took it out on Derpy.

There are so many other things that they could have worried about that were actually worth worrying about. But no, they had to spend their time changing a character that was perfect the way it was.

Do any of the people reading this think that I'm stupid for saying this? Feel free to waste your precious time telling me how 'wrong' I am. I don't mind.

I don't think that would be trolling. That's just an angry disregard baiting for flames but not really wanting them in the first place. Like "here's my opinion, dare to oppose but I really don't want to debate."

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Caswin In reply to In-The-Zone [2012-03-04 17:54:24 +0000 UTC]

Well, I did say it sounded like trolling. I've heard similar lines before from people who were being more obvious about trying to rile people, get an excuse to throw in a "U MAD?", et cetera.

Actually, I'm not sure I understand you. What do you mean by "baiting for flames but not really wanting them"?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

In-The-Zone In reply to Caswin [2012-03-05 01:05:21 +0000 UTC]

The "U MAD" line is often thrown around so loosely that it loses it's original meaning. Now everyone is using it.

What I mean by that is when someone expresses an opinion quite angrily they threaten want someone to oppose them, but in actuality when they calm down after writing such a heated comment they don't want flames. It's like "Feel free to waste your time disagreeing with me with how wrong I am" is just asking for debate even though they secretly want to be left alone. They come to say their opinion in a strong fashion but then they are so mad they dare people to reply.

It's like when you're really angry and you want someone to argue with you, but after you calm down you don't. It's tough to explain but I've seen people do this and once they get into the debate that they literally asked for and they really don't want to participate they often back out of it quickly.

I see. I suppose your reasoning makes some sense.

However, it's not for all people who disagree with me. In fact, I'm quite interested to see other people's opinions as to why they think the change was a good thing.
It's simply for all people who think whining about a fictional pony is more important that whining about something that actually matters. I suppose I may be slightly hypocritical by saying this, but I do worry about important things along with the occasional random thing such as this.

Well dear Sir I can name you a list of shows that can go on and on with both hidden sexual jokes and male/female stereotypes, subliminal messages which are much much more offensive than a 25 second voice recording and derp eyes.

Thing is, a lot of people are unhappy about the change, so eventually hasbro has to make a choise. Eighter give in to this minority that wants derpy to change or go their way, or go with the other 3/4 of their fans and keep it normal, or atleast dont make it so generic, and stereotype blonde reference. I like the show because it is both more tought out and well made than over 90% of the shows nowadays(after the 2000 that is). When i saw the change I just tought this is bad, not noly because it was changed but because it was done lousy(in my opinion) , it looked like somthing I could. ve edited in Windows Movie Maker, thats not what I came for. if i wanted that i might aswell go watch Spongebob or phineas and Perb(or what ever its called).

As for opinions , opinions have to be tought threw, Everyone can just go all out and insult somthing, tell that its stupid and bad, hell you can do that with every single object. If I wanted to see somthing bad I would eventually, without the need of common logic. If I where to force myself into believing that that is bad I would eventually start feeling bad when i see it, which would inforce that feeling.
Thats really basic psychology. And it is true. If you where to tell yourself you are ill and you would' ve really really believe in it than everntually you would get ill. It has happened to me before.

So no, getting offended is easy. You don' t really have to think deep to find somthing you don' t like, NOTHING is perfect. My matter of debate here is not that every1 searches a suspect. The reason i am angry is not because somone stated an unfitting to myself opinion, the reason that i am angry is that yet again a small lobby somhow manages to change somthing that most people enjoy and like to their bendings effectively ruining most of it and instead of atleast doing a good job and making it good , (in this discussion its Derpy) they made her into a blonde stereotype. Which I think many many more people would find offencive in the long run.

You know I study as an engineeer and one of the first rules we learned is that you can never please everyone. There will always be somone to object against you. So instead what engineers do is they try to please the greater part of the targeted group. Which 9/10 works out well and keeps high ratings of happyness among most.

So atleast for me this is not an issue of being pissed because of change, this is not an issue of being pissed because of opinion of others. Its their show and there intitled of foing what they think is right. But yet again when you go against a majority into pleasing a small minority, you are asking to get bitten any time soon. And essentially there are over 42000+ people who signed the petition for bringing derpy back to the old or atleast in a little bit more reasonable state.

I can only hope is goes well, and otherwise there will always be a small part of my soul which will treasure and remember that you dont have to be the same nor perfect to deserve a part in society and a happy life.

And also I dont mind the long type, its 3.00 in the morning and I had waay too much sugar before bed.

A fine day to you good Sir.

I think you might have the wrong number.

I also don't think that the staff expected this kind of backlash from the "majority". In fact, since you brought it up, I believe that many of the people objecting to the edit got there by convincing themselves that it was something monstrously offensive to them, rather than something problematic but reasonable.

Caswin In reply to Caswin [2012-03-03 02:51:28 +0000 UTC]

Before anyone asks: "objecting" is a poor choice of words. I believe that many of the people becoming outraged, complaining bitterly about where TV is going these days, and talking in terms of the "death" of Derpy and how they killed her or locked her away for daring to be different, got there by (as you said) convincing themselves that this was worse than it was.

As did the side that was against derpy in the first place.
As stated before I can give you a long long list of offensive cartoon characters far far worse than what derpy did here for 25 second s. People get offended too easily when they wan to, and this counts for both sides.

But again as both sides have opinions and as long as we live in free nations all may state them. I hope my argumentation (that long long text) gave you atleast an idea of why somone would support Derpy, and be against the editing. As I am myself.

A good morning to you Sir :3

When Derpy was named and voiced the first time, my heart burst with joy. It was one of the best things that had happened, it cheered up night that was going downhill (and several days after it)

But now? Because of some idiots who are apparently "offended" by a pony who has crossed eyes and a name that is used commonly throughout the internet and very, very rarely means "retarded" And because Hasbro apparently couldn't stomach a few angry morons - the same kind of people who protest gay rights, in my experience - we've lost something amazing.

I'm only hoping that this isn't a permanent change, that Hasbro takes a stand against the people who for some reason found an amazing show of love and acceptance "offensive" and brings back what turned a decent episode into the episode that shook the MLP fanbases like an earthquake and garnered its own holiday.

Derpy is far more important to some people than I feel many realise. She's a symbol of something astounding and I'll be damned if I see her lost because of some people who refused to love and tolerate.
