It seems there has been alot of buzz about Derpy being "fixed". I saw the New version of Derpy in "The Last Round-Up" and I do admit it didn't settle well with me. I still enjoyed the original. I didn't like the reason why they had her change. It didn't seem at all offensive in my opinion. When I first saw the scene in the animatic, I literally burst with joy. But I had a feeling that it might not settle with some fans and some people. Especially since people already have their own version of Derpy and people might get the wrong idea of her character.
Its not often that cartoons show fan content. Cause sometimes when you include Fan content, it usually can result to something negative (to fans or to others). And sometimes it also endangers the identity/essence of the show. Or if people like it, they will probably expect a lot more.To the point they might expect TOO much. So you could imagine my surprise when they decided to name Derpy and give her a voice.
Derpy has became more than just some fancy Easter egg in the show. She's became an Icon, a symbol to the fans of MLP:FIM. Though Derpy was created in a studio, her character was created by the fans. You can probably say that she represents all Bronies everywhere. Fans have enjoyed Derpy whenever they see her in the background until the point when she talked. The entire studio loves her as well. I was there in one of those Livestream chatrooms when people first heard her talk. It was quite entertaining how happy people were. So its no surprise to see people get really upset by this.
In a way, I understand why majority of fans are upset but blaming, pointing fingers and throwing hate around is not the way to do this. You're forgetting your own motto "Love and Tolerance". You bronies are one of inspiration and our greatest achievement. Don't sully your name by spreading Hate and intolerance. Remember, Tolerance is not the same as acceptance. If you are upset with something, display it in a more positive way. You'll get your message across much better than lashing it out with hate. Show some respect. Show some humility.
Oh I also want to address on a artist name Yamino. I've heard that she has been garnered a lot of hate by the Brony Community due to her not liking Derpy's portrayal. Let it be known, that she had NOTHING to do with the sudden change. She expressed an opinion on Derpy. That is all. She did not ask me to do this or anyone on the staff. I had to say this because the hate she's been receiving is unnecessary. So leave her be.
Also don't spam notes and messages to the people who work on the show. You're probably not going to get much out of it.
On the issue on Derpy whether she'll have the same Derp face expression and stuff. The show will still go on and I hope you will continue to support the show. Though Derpy is a great character, she is not essentially the reason why the show is awesome (though she is one of the Reasons). If Derpy never existed on that fateful scene in the first episode, would MLP be a bad show? Remember MLP is a great show because for what it is. I didn't know about Derpy until someone from the Studio pointed it out. I hope you'll still enjoy the show no matter what happens.
I hope this message will ease some of your minds. Thank you.

As another commentor said, it was the little details that really brought the fans together. The attention and care the team gave to the show that resulted in the creation of this fandom. The relationship to the fans was acknowledged with the ads and the easter eggs, but wasn't truly solidified until Derpy was given an official name and voice in the show.
And then this edit/retcon/change happened. Can hardly blame the fans for feeling a little bit betrayed by this.
Hasbro made the decision to include Derpy in the show with a voice. The reasons could be anything, but the way it was done suggests only that it was a reward to the fans for their loyalty and support.
I suppose the question is: What happens now? Are we to forget she ever spoke or named? Will Derpy go back to being a background easter egg to placate the fans so they won't jump ship?
The relationship has been soured. The ball is in Hasbro's court. No random marketing rep's word will suffice in this instance.
As for the question: If Derpy never existed on that fateful scene in the first episode, would MLP be a bad show? Hypotheticals won't change what happened. You might be able guilt people into still following with the "REAL fan" garbage, but without a satisfactory response from Hasbro, the intensity and energy and passion of the fanbase will have diminished.
Those are my observations on all this.

~Kreoss seems to care quite a lot about the show and fans, and I would like to voice my appreciation for that.

I was disappointed by the change, but at least I did have fit about it. I mean, she's still Derpy and all, whether the show changes that or not. It would be a shame if she 'wasn't Derpy anymore' in the cartoon, but it's not like everyone has to have a rage fit about it. Be happy that she did has some great moments on the big screen.

Very well spoken, I have to say.
In all honesty, I fail to see the problem with Derpy - you think that if people actually had a problem, they would have stated that since day 1, but they only react AFTER she is named as such in an episode.. the way people think sometimes is baffling to say the least.

I am not a big fan of MLP but when I saw the images and links of people getting so angry over that character's change, it make me think back on the furry community where people called the fags. Only the portion who draw smut images are considered fags. The ones who draw well with the style deserves some tolerance.
I understand the very pain the REAL fans are going through. All the idiots who get angry over one character's change should not even be allowed to hold a Pinkie Pie figure in their hands or within 50 feet.
Thanks to you for writing this.

I may garner some backlash for this, but it's all opinionated and from what I'm observing here and on Brony forums and such.
Derpy was basically a dream for the Brony community. Due to a minor animation flaw involving her eyes, the Bronies began dreaming of a character named Derpy Hooves. This dream is akin to Doctor Whooves, Lyra, DJ PON-3, etc.
Back to the point. When Derpy's name was spoken and we heard her speak and watched her wreck shit accidentally (and comically) the Brony community's dream was realized. And now, with the iTunes change, the Bronies feel their dream is threatened. However, according to this, Derpy will remain, the Bronies just want to keep her Derpy. We don't want Ditzy with the smooth voice and slightly off-kilter eye. We want Derpy. Wonky eye, goofy voice and all. Look at Goofy from Disney, as well as Jimmy and Timmy from South Park. Nobody ever seems to have a problem with that, because parents have grown up with Goofy, and Jimmy/Timmy are on an adult TV show/ But Derpy (Who isn't necessarily mentally handicapped) received a lot of flack for "Mocking the mentally handicapped" I have a mentally handicapped family member, and when I watched "The Last Roundup" with him when it premiered, he laughed so much, I thought he wouldn't stop. He wasn't offended.
I will admit now that I am a Brony, but not as rabid as others can be (I guess I'm a fledgling, if you will) and I was so happy when Derpy was Canon-ized and saddened at the update, but I am not a crusader. I am merely an observer in this, hoping Derpy is maintained as her regular self. The reason I signed the petitions and that I'm posting this now is because this whole issue is a key example of how being "Politically Correct" puts a stranglehold on the creative process (at times). It's like if I was super clumsy (which i sometimes am) and knocked something over and yelled "I just had a Derp moment" am I making fun of handicapped folk? No. I'm making fun of my clumsiness. It's the same with Derpy. She never said or did anything that constitutes "I am mentally handicapped" or "I may have mental problems" She was a clutz. plain and simple.
As I said, I may garner hatred, or praise, but what I have said here is meant to be taken from an observer's standpoint.
Brohoof to all, and to all a good Day

I don't really understand why you would receive backlash. In fact, I'm quite pleased with not only what you said, but the little story about how you and your mentally handicapped member enjoyed Derpy in the original version of "The Last Roundup." I may have mild Asperger's, but I loved the original scene. It was an absolute joy watching Derpy become an important tertiary character rather than merely one of the ponies in the background. I, too, was very upset (and still am, only now a bit reserved) that the edit on iTunes censored/politically corrected most of who made Derpy the great character she was.
In short, wonderful comment!

You're my bloody hero, sir. I look around and I see everybody flipping their lids about all of this and I'm like... "Well what did you expect?" I somewhat saw it coming. Everybody knows how people are today. If it's ideologically sensitive, they'll tear it apart like piranhas. And when I saw Derpy, my friends and I were so unbelievably happy and surprised and excited when we saw that, as you said, our icon had been given a name and voice, just for us fans! But I knew the moment I heard her voice that people were going to get the wrong idea and try to do something about it. But just because they changed the voice doesn't mean that "Derpy's dead"! No! It just means they changed her voice in that one little clip she was in! So to have seen one of the animators post up something like this, it really brightens my day. Seems like you guys are the only ones who really get the whole "love and tolerance" thing. More than most bronies, it seems.

I really like fan favorite Derpy. Like you said before, she is a icon to the brony community. Not even Lauren Faust would want to crush everybody's Derpy love. however, Political Correctness is rising at a terrible rate even more so ever since the 2008 election due the majority voted for our current pres (whom shall be nameless) due to his race alone (ask Samuel L Jackson)
plus as for "displaying it in a more positive way", that's sadly unlikely since the majority seems to support chaotic people like the Occupy movement, Soros, Reid, Pelosi, Olbermann and Ed Schultz
Sorry for injecting politics on the manner but it's just to send a point that love and tolerance is non existent in this generation

If I had said anything too unkindly "heated" about the Derpy issue (and I don't know how to find my comments in all this rumpus), I hope I can speak for certain portions of the brony community and say that I am truly sorry if I have offended anypony.
I believe you understand how much Derpy means to us, Kreoss, and as much as we act like, well, angry little boys about what other people would see as a minor tweak, you seem to understand that we mean well, and have encouraged us to press toward our goal in keeping our pegasus friend alive and well.
It's difficult to read a level-headed post for clarity when every sense in your body is screaming "NO" and you want to reach out and hit the nearest satisfying-to-hit inanimate object (such as this decent television next to me, that I would very much regret hitting).
I hope you do know what you are talking about, in saying that she will be fine, because it will mean a lot to me personally, and many others (if... you couldn't tell. <_<;; ). Yourself being an animator on the show, I'm sure you've seen whether or not she'll be making any appearances in future episodes. I think we'd all forgive being slightly misled if she DID crop up with another shine in the spotlight before season 2 is over, although we've been told she will not. Either way we'll be looking for her as a background pony, hopefully getting away with a derp or two here and there.
It raises my hopes that there are those on the team, in spite of our false collective sense of entitlement and overall RAGE about the subject of the alteration of lady Derpy Hooves, that seem to understand how we feel about this whole... fiasco.
Please, know that no matter how murderously stupid we can get about certain portions of this show, it's all because we love it to death. Ultimately, most of us trust you lot to give it your all, and even if we talk about disliking an episode, come on, I've seen most of the episodes at least three times and they only get better with subsequent viewings. Your team is nothing to scoff at.
I'm sure the hate mail will continue to flow. I hope that it doesn't get you guys down too much. Although in a stream of "YOU KILLED DERPY DIE DIE DIE DIE", it's probably a bit too intense from time to time.
Even with our crazy ways of showing it, we hope you know that we all, love all of you.
You bucking rock.

The reason I took a blow from this was because when I first became a brony she was something a noticed on my own, the second episode i TRULY watched was that one with the first Derpy appearance. But in my mind it isnt the change in the show that hurts, its the reasoning behind it. Honestly, people need to realize that they are the ones perversing Derpy in the first place. It was never ment to represent anything other than fun, and the people who said it did were the ones making it that way.

There was no reason to change her. I personally find Ed, Patrick, and many other popular cartoon characters to be a far more offensive portrayal of mentally challenged individuals. I don't know who was upset about Derpy's adorable first performance, and a low voice that I still viewed as feminine, but they've obviously had little to no experience with recent animation if they found HER offensive.
I want the old Derpy back. Giving her a stereotypical blonde cheerleader kind of voice and censoring her name seems a lot more offensive to me than just leaving her alone.
Asking us to show love and tolerance when Hasbro apparently cannot do the same for their own character seems a little hypocritical to me. Grow a spine, Hasbro.
